Agree it's not great but he does some good things in it. Here's one from the championship v Vic M game.

That left foot and some of his movement has a lot of Kane Farrell in it, his right foot also looks nice though unlike Kane.. Clearly a great kick. Looks brave, but he clearly looks like an uncontested ball player.

I look at that video and see a wingman, not a small forward. So will be interesting to see how he is used.

With berry and Richards we have upgraded what felt like the weakest line in our team weekly last year with mcentee and Evans playing a lot of games. He is quick, smart and a good kick. Will be a good player for us.
Agree. Also have to remember that Rioli is 30 and misses 6-8 matches a year for injury or doing something silly.

Would still like to think that Tommy A can make it too.

Only think that I like about this pick is that he’s a small that also leads at the ball.

To often our smalls just get lost in space and hope for a crumb out the back. Smalls that also lead at the ball create and are dangerous. Hope he pays off.

He will be our tallest "small forward" player at 181cm according to rookie me central. Lachie Charleson is 177cm and currently our next tallest small forward.

With a bit more size Joe Berry will definitely play midfield.
But for now he will play the forward role in round 1 2025. He's in our best 23.

Just hope he's good enough to make our side come round 1. Definitely fills a desperate need. Really need him to be 10 year player from here, and a gun small forward for many years.

We really needed someone to slot into that round 1 side. Probably 1 mid short IMO, but happy to take a small forward if he is ready to go. Can't afford to have picked someone that'll need to be building in the SANFL.

He will be ready for round 1 2025 lock that in.

So why did we have to give up 45, given WCE probably take the same guy with 15 that they did with 16.
Freo and GWS were expected to bid for Berry and Port rated him a significantly better player for our needs than anyone else. Whether this is the right call or not will need time to tell but our recruiters are pretty good and I trust them on this.

He looks pretty slight in highlights reels, but after seeing the photo of him with Gray/Butters, i'm no longer concerned.

Good size. Could be the next Toby Greene

lol he's Robbie's size. Aka tiny.
Port usually put out a decent highlights reel on the new draftees.
Very keen to see it.

Hoping to see that he has some tricks in traffic. AFL small forwards need to have tricks, they can't just be uncontested players like that video shows. They need to be able to have great evasiveness, elite speed or agility, some incredible goal sense plucking them from anywhere, and an ability in the contest. I don't see anything in the video that shows that, I see out in space, up and back, breaking away from outside stoppage, wingman type play. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not the trade everything for a small forward type player. More a solid wingman pick.

Port Adelaide National Recruiting Manager Geoff Parker says:
Has been one of the best performed hybrid forwards in the country this year. Is well balanced and covers the ground with a high cruising speed. Has very good IQ and runs smart patterns in the front half to find the ball. Has strong instinct on when to come up to the contest, when to sit out or spit into space.

All Australian with 9 goals in 4 games
27 goals for Murray Bushrangers
2024 Team of the Year
Joint winner of Bushrangers best and fairest

That's a fair final year resume

Does a hybrid forward mean that he can turn into a four-legged creature when required?

I love football vernacular.

For me, a hybrid forward would be Toby Green, Jake Stringer or Robbie Gray. Can mark (both on the lead and in the contest) and crumb or run on the loose ball equally well. The defensive pressure also is a bonus. Can Berry take contested marks? If he can, then we've got ourselves a very dangerous player.

Although I don't agree with using a high pick on a small forward unless they're a Nick Watson-esque star, I do believe Joe Berry is a good player. Smart, fast and skilful. He's also a willing tackler and is surprisingly good in traffic.

I will try my very darnedest to hold my tongue if Murphy Reid becomes the player I expect him to, because it's not Berry's fault we picked him.

He's a Power now and I'm 100% behind him. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Keeps his shape and handles the chaos ball.
