Well the lawn is looking sharp again, and we got our man. Very happy boy. Yay us.
He's a Tiger now, let's give him some lurv, Barry White style.

B: Grimes Chaplin Morris
HB: Batchelor Griffiths Rance
INT: Newman Houli

That is a solid back 8. Experience, size, leadership, skills, rebounding, run and carry, marking ability, 1%ers and tackling. There isn't really a weakness to be seen.

Fairly happy with the pick up. We get him for free and he should be a best 22 player. Long term I'm not convinced but he will be solid back up for the injury prone Grimes and Griffiths. Hopefully he can play within his limitations and utilise the likes of Houli, Newman, Batchelor and Deledio to limit the damage from his kicking.

For the Port supporters:

If we acknowledge he has limitations in his game can you acknowledge he'll likely do better in a backline with better (both on and off field) support?

Alright I'll try analyse those stats a little for you....

Firstly with efficiency its a crap stat for defenders because they do a lot of chip chip kicks that raise their efficiency a lot. And as for the clangers its not so much the amount he does but the basic mistakes that they are and the position of the field they are in. Also Carlile always takes the best forward and is often left in 1on1's which is why he often gives away more frees whereas Chaplin often doesn't really have a direct opponent. As for rebound 50's if the ball is in your backline so often its no surprise its going to come out a lot hence the high amount of rebounds.

We are just being honest in our assessments and if you look back throughout the entire year its been a running theme. Its not like we are saying this all now that he has been traded. He can play good games though and he could possibly become the defender we thought he could be back in 07, 08 but he could also just provide more of the same for you guys.

uhhhhg. I was waiting for the Port supporter to come on here and tell me that stats are wrong and you can use stats to tell you anything. If hes leading your club for rebounding 50's I hardly think his first priority is to ' chip chip kick' it around the backline. He is clearly your best defender in terms of disposal efficiency and clangers, these are facts. Can you give me some stats on the contrary? I've never seen a fan base react to a player leaving with such spite about his ability before. He must have gotten around to alot of Port supporters mrs or something.

Carlton and Grigg.

Firstly Pearce led our team for rebound 50's which was why we didn't want to let him go. Secondly like I said if you actually watch the games you will understand what we are talking about. Its the dropped uncontested marks or the 15 meter kicks across goal that miss the target. And the lack of physical pressure that he puts on opponents that kill us. And like I said these are not reactions to him leaving we have been saying this for years now.

Carlton and Grigg.

I wasnt reading these boards at the time. Was it this kind of 'he's shit but were glad hes gone but we are going to make an effort to come on your board and tell you how shit he is anyway' sort of mentality. Its kind of pathetic. But it is the silly season I suppose.

Look how the Grigg deal turned out anyway. An absolute Killa Dilla!

Funny you should say that. Carlile and Trengove were our main KPP's, Chaplin was supposed to be their support. If you don't rate the way Port Adelaide defenders support each other, that says a lot about Chaplin.

1/ According to many of your supporters he was played out of position. i.e. he should have been KPP rather than support.
2/ Support is not just back line support - it's also midfield support. i.e. mids getting back to assist and doing it effectively, or not allowing the ball to come in as much or in as dangerous places / situations.

I note you just took a pot shot - the kind of which has been earning many of your supporters a bad rep in this thread. For instance - you should have addressed the off field component of my comment as it was integral to my post, but you chose to ignore it. Save this selective crap for the bay or MB, not an opposition board.

Grigg was a bit different because Carlton fans genuinly rated him prior to him leaving. He'd worked hard to break back into the side and was unlikely to get injured right before the finals. Was a required player with plenty of potential.

Then all of a sudden he was a soft-****-front-running-helicoptering-turnover-merchant who didn't have the drive to break into the most promising midfield in the league. Insults like weak, gutless and even narcicist were thrown at him. Was pretty funny.

I didn't address the off-field bit because I don't disagree with it.

We'll see how he goes at Richmond. He might improve, he might not. I wouldn't be all 'He'll definitely improve now that he's out of Poort Powaz!' though. A bloke named Jay Schulz who finished equal 5th in the AFL for average goals this year might have something to say about that.

Oh, and to the posters in this thread generally, please never compare us to Carlton supporters ever again. I've never been called anything more hurtful in my life.

Well done Tiges. Im absolutely stoked! Not because Chappy will necessarily be a gun next year but because things are really starting to go our way. Remember that we got this guy for free!!! He will hopefully add depth to our backline at worst, and at best our coaching staff can put him in a position and give him enough confidence to eliminate the flaws in his game (Just as Houli, Grigg, Morris, Maric have done as they all have weaknesses, Moneyball FTW!). Even if he goofs it dun matter coz he was freeeee!!! Awww yerrrrrr!!!

For years and years to come....

So I post a balanced thought (nothing remotely like 'He'll definitely improve now that he's out of Poort Powaz!'), and you just ignore the balancing components and point out the negatives? Forgive me if I don't lick your balls.

Fair enough on the Carlton thing though ... there are limits.

Another great pickup by the Tiges. I was so sick of hearing opposition Port supporter trashing him as a player so I looked up his stats. The number one thing Port supporters were give it to him about is his disposal and decision making.
Last year he went at 78.4% disposal efficiency. Now to put that into perspective the Port team disposal efficiency was A LEAGUE WORST 70.5%. Port averaged 48.9 clangers of while Troy averaged ONLY 1.7 of which placing him 25th on their list for clangers.
The most interesting of his stats was that he averaged only 0.4 free kicks against a game. Compare that with Carlile’s 0.9 free kicks a game. Troy also had .9 more tackles a game and .5 more contested possessions a game compared to that of Carlile making his free kick against count even more impressive.
He ranked 4th in the league in Time on Ground at 97.9% in 2012.
And ranked 11th in the league at rebound 50’s at 3.9 which signals that Port WANTED the ball in his hands coming out of defence.
Port supporters can trash him all they want must rest assured we have ourselves a player that will make an Ivan type impact.

awesome stats, shows that his disposal isnt as bad a ppl say, its the same with rance everyone says his disposal is shit but it isnt

Rances
awesome stats, shows that his disposal isnt as bad a ppl say, its the same with rance everyone says his disposal is shit but it isnt
Rance's disposal efficiency was 80% compared to 78.4% but had Rance has 3 clangers compared to Troy's 1.7 per game. Make of that what you will.

The leadership Chaplin brings cannot be understated. By all reports he is a no bullshit, forthright and intelligent guy. Welcome aboard tiger.
