Werribee v North Ballarat

Good to see Norris performing well. Anyone got any feedback regarding Warren Benjamin's game?

I am kinda worried for Tarrant, O' Keefe and Warren having to play as forwards in Axe's pitiful excuse for a forward set up. It's hard to get confidence from limited opportunities in a forwardline cramped with talls.

Tarrant missed the game due to a groin injury.

Yeah I know, but I don't see Warren or O' Keefe coming in next week if Hale is fit. Long term that forward set up of Axe's isn't going to do any of those boys any favours.

Do you know the extent of the injury EH?

I think we need to reward that form of Jones'. 7 contested marks and 10 shots at goal is sensational. And he has been in the best players for Ballarat just about every game. We gave Smith a game due to consistency at VFL level, time to do the same for CJ. Especially since Warren and O'Keefe didn't really put their hands up.

Jones best as Roosters crow

Corey Jones has been playing some of his best football of late and it’s no surprise that he’s back in contention for AFL selection. Despite some tough outgoings with a few heavy knocks to the head, the veteran forward had another dominant performance for North Ballarat in its win over Werribee on Sunday.

The 29 year-old has played just one senior game this season in round two but is a chance to add to that total after racking up 27 possessions and pulling down 14 marks.

Jones' goal tally could have hit double figures if he’d been accurate, but instead he finished the day with three goals and seven behinds in the Roosters' 51 point win.

Kangaroos teammate Ed Lower was one of the catalysts behind North Ballarat's dominance in the midfield and has showed no signs of the broken leg he suffered earlier in the year with 29 possessions and 80 per cent game time.

Matt Campbell spent extended periods on the bench in his first game back from an ankle injury, but after being named as an emergency on Saturday night he could be a chance for a return against the Bulldogs in round nine.

Youngster Brayden Norris was another to impress. Taken at pick 53 in the 2009 National Draft, Norris has shown promising signs in his four games with the Roosters, developing quicker than anyone had expected. The lightly-framed North draftee picked up 24 possessions and was named in the best.

Werribee showed plenty of fight in the first half despite its opponents going in to the match as resounding favourites. North Ballarat lead by just two points at half-time, but quickly took the ascendency in the second half. A huge final term netted the Roosters 21 inside 50's and 16 scoring shots.

Tigers' coach Simon Atkins was pleased with the opening half, but said his team still has plenty to learn in order to compete with the top sides.

“It’s a lack of ability for the playing group to absorb pressure, to absorb what the opposition is doing and to react to it, clearly that’s a weakness of ours," Atkins said.

“You’ve got to kick goals to win football and we didn’t do that."

Ben Speight's return to the VFL from a broken jaw provided a rare positive for Werribee. He had 16 possessions and got through the match unscathed to again stake a claim for an AFL debut in 2010.

Omitted from the North Melbourne side, Ben Warren did his best to impress, but was starved of opportunities and managed just nine possessions. It was a similar story for Nathan O'Keefe who had seven possessions and kicked two goals.

2009 draftees Jamie MacMillan and Ayden Kennedy were under siege in defence as the Roosters attacked, but both could hold their heads high providing some strong rebound out of the backline.

My report on the Northerners' website isn't a whole lot different to Ben's. Ben includes more stats as I just go on what I see, avoiding any stats that might change my judgement of how the game went (at least from my point of view).
Anyway, check out the Northerners' website!

Good report John, good to hear another point of veiw.:thumbsu:

Not at all Ben! It's just that sometimes I think, wow, what a game, and a player only had 16 touches. Other times, I fell like a player was pretty ordinary, and he may have had a ton of the ball. I purposely avoid the majority of stats until I've pretty much written my report.
People appreciate the stats that you are able to supply!

Those who have already delisted Josh Smith in their own minds and want him out of the team immediately because he won't be on the list in 5 months time would absolutely soil themselves if the retiring CJ got a game.

Do you feel that I am too reliant on stats for my work CLP?
Not at all Ben, really appreciate your veiws. I just think it is good to get other peoples point of veiw. Sometimes I think when you are just watching the ball, alot of the stuff off the ball gets missed.

For example, how many times do we hear about someone laying a shepard? Or a good block? Just a few things that get missed when relying on stats.

A lot gets missed when relying on the stats. Yet stats really do complement a player report so keep using them Ben.

The biggest thing stats miss is the effectiveness of the possession, and whether the particular player's opponent has an influence. It's nice to know Player X had 14 touches, but if his opponent had 25 and kicked two goals then Player X probably had a bad day.

Fair point, CLP.

My match day rle involves me keep a particularly close on eye on the ball for what I am drawing on my sheets that are used by coaching staff.

This is why it might appear why I am watching only the ball and not much in my player reports.

Hey Ben.

Thanks for your detailed report of the VFL game on Sunday.
The report covered everything I would need to know about the game. Great work, keep it up.

Thanks also for your the great company at the North v Adelaide game on Sat night. I never thought I would sit next to a future star sports writer. Mike Sheehan might have to make room for you soon.
Hope to see you again soon.
Cheers
