West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

Jackson is leagues better anyone your list

This is a straw man argument.

We need to draft mids. Jackson was always going to Freo anyway.

Dan is just mad that we didn’t trade our future first in 2022(Harley) or take the Melbourne deal for pick 1 in 2023.

Jackson was never going to be an eagle. He said as much himself that he made up his mind half way through the season after meeting with JL.

So he played 2022. Still played well when he got on the park, then injured his Achilles in 2023 and retired.

That’s not unusual. And we aren’t in the position we’re in because of Nic.

So who is to blame
The administration?
Or simply just unlucky with draft picks?

Nic playing in 2022/23 has next to zero impact on our position in those years or now.

If he had retired at the end of 2021 we’d be in an identical position to the one we are in now.

And he was not on a lucrative deal. Was on 400K at the end.

Non WA people were calling out the extravagant contract NicNat for a while there
Contributed nothing for 2 years top coin

To be fair, every club does it!

You need to spend the money somewhere and giving it to kids that havent proven anything or average list ploders would be much worse!

Pay the players that have given everything they had to the club, they deserve that money!

I draw the line at Gaff though. Give him a pie and coke every away game and be done with him!

As I said they have to play north twice

Hawthorn in perth

Gold Coast in Perth later in the year

Essendon in perth

Sad thing is you could say the same
Thing about north

At this stage West Coast would go in underdogs by a fair margin in all those games.

I doubt they go winless as even the worst teams spring an upset here and there.

The likelihood of making up the 4.5 win difference between us now and north in 2022 is pretty slim if you ask me.

So we would likely be ending the year in a worse position than north was in on 2022, and that will have a correlation with any assistance west coast get of they decide to apply for it.

So what would you have done after his AA season in 2021, delist him?

As pointed out by others, his salary was way lower than what you are making it out to be, mainly due to the durability concerns already factored in. You could list 50 issues at the club that are more relevant than whatever Naitanui was paid in 2023.

Someone, obviously not me, should start a thread asking the best way to rebuild.

North apparently did it badly by letting all their vets go

We've done it badly by keeping in too many vets

Which club has completed a real rebuild in a manner people deem right?

Has there been many clubs who have completed a premiership to premiership rebuild without retaining any players from the previous flag in the last 20 years?

Where did the eagles go wrong?

They (the club) got arrogant and their supporters could see the writing on the wall from a mile away. They planned for "now" whilst disregarding the future, example.....trading away high draft picks to get Tom Kelly.

As the old saying goes "you make your bed, now you can lie in it"

You don't end up in this position because of one easily identifiable decision, it's a combination of factors, some our fault and some bad luck, The club decided after 2018 to roll the dice on another flag, something most clubs would do in the same position, which resulted in us trading out a few draft picks. Then we had injuries that were just bad luck, such as Venables and Sheppard, which hurt our age profile even further. We also blew a couple of picks. Then there were changes to the rules after 2018 that affected us more than just about any club. After that you had the injuries to Shuey, Yeo, NicNat etc that cruelled the club. And there are definitely some players that got complacent after winning a premiership. All those things factor in.

But if the current hysteria around West Coast shows us anything, it's that most eastern states commentators don't follow us closely enough to have a clue. The problems weren't simply because of the Kelly trade (he's our best mid and the picks 16, 18 and 27 aren't game-changers in their own right), it wasn't the NicNat deal, it wasn't a failure to split the Harley pick (even though we split the year before and may split again this year).

I also think it's too early for all the doom and gloom. We've had three games all against top eight contenders, two away from home, and lost by 50-70 points. That's still better than last year. The game plan is still new and you can see the players putting together some plays only for them to fall apart at the last, something that will improve the longer they play together and to the plan, there's still a few mature bodies to come back that will improve the team. We'll know more when we get some matches against teams expected to finish lower on the ladder and some home games. But anyone thinking we'll go winless is kidding themselves.

If you think it can't get any worse, what's gonna happen when our senior players retire?

Grin and bear it, simple as that. What the Eagles are currently going through.....teams like Richmond, Sydney and Geelong (to name a few) all had a drought in the wilderness in terms of not winning Premierships. Look at Fremantle, they haven't won a Premiership yet.

It's time the Eagles supporters....every single one of them tasted hard times like supporters of other clubs had to endure. Instead of Eagles supporters drinking Chardonnay, instead they can drink water from the tap. Good luck. It happens and trust me, the loyalty and patience of all Eagles supporters will be tested. You Think it's difficult now, well it will probably get worse.

My man didn't even mention his own club.

Most definitely true. We have the most "restless" supporters in the comp.
Who , like forever , have said they don’t accept mediocrity .
(interestingly more than content to accept uncompetitive tho it seems )

So what’s happened?

….or have your nuffie supporters finally realised that they didn’t end up having this mythical ability to make their team good by , apparently not accepting mediocrity ?

Absolutely accepting grinning and bearing it. But losing by 70+ points every week is a few levels above grinning and bearing it. Like I said in this thread a few days ago, the only way I see us getting a priority pick is if the AFL thinks we're skewing the league when it comes to the teams who play us twice getting massive % boosters and it affecting the ladder come the end of the season.
