We all say crazy shot sometimes.

I’m actually ok with the occasional recycled player, but we over do it a little.
Has it worked at all for us besides Petrie? I can't really think of any others, Bennell showed a couple of flashes but only played 20 or 30 games for us before he was gone so I wouldn't count that.

Forgot Josh Smith was even on our list until I heard his name just then.
What a waste of a rookie spot that was (again).
I don't necessarily agree. The club has spoken highly of his influence on the group throughout the year. We recruited a professional who can help lead and develop the kids in our 2nds (we even had to drag Petrie out of retirement to shore them up!), whilst also providing insurance for outside run in our senior side (I do agree that this part hasn't gone as well for him, but he did play a role in a win over GWS).

It's easy to say we could have taken a prospect with greater potential, but we're in the midst of a flag tilt without much mature depth; the thinking behind his selection was probably sound.

Does Petrie even count considering his career was essentially over and we gave him another year? not like he was a disregarded 25 year old.

Meh...that's what I think of when I think of Josh Smith...Meh.
He doesn't belong on an AFL list.

We don’t draft recycled players to try turn them into superstars of the comp.

They are drafted to fill a hole in the list that would take too long to fill with an 18 year old kid

Weren’t you* calling for him to be playing Masten’s role in the side early in the year

*may not have been you but was definitely a few nuffies on here.
Not sure who suggested he replace Masten, but I think he was definitely recruited with that possibility/option in mind.

Masten - runs all day. Good disposal if allowed time, poor disposal under even slight pressure. Good link player when we attack off half back. Poor defender going the other way. Only knows about tackling from being on the receiving end. Getting older and slower, maybe has one more year in him. And that's more of an indictment on our recruiting than anything else.
Smith - runs all day. 5 years younger. Disposal seems suspect. Only knows about tackling from being on the receiving end. Doesn't seem to add a lot else. Recruited as an elite runner who can link and play midfield minutes (remind you of anyone?), but hasn't stepped up to AFL level.
Petrucelle - long term recruited as a wing. Likely Masten replacement over time.

So I think Smith was recruited as a Masten type. Looks like being another waste of a rookie spot though.

Depends how you measure success. I think Brooksby has been very important for the Beagles, but unlikely to ever play AFL.

Not argue with you, because for the most part I agree

To be fair I don't mind using one rookie spot on an older bloke who fills a need. But with a list of 45 guys how many holes on our list should we have?
I mean we've got Smith, McInnes and Brooksby all on our rookie list this year, that's three guys who aren't really AFL quality and aren't ever likely to be. It's a lot of spots to use on guys who aren't likely to be in the top side for more than 1 or 2 games in an extreme emergency.
