Might have been a grumble or two with some rule tweaks as Peel stormed their way into Finals

This is it right here.

None of the WAFL clubs care about Peel’s alignment with Freo because they don’t care for Peel. They didn’t want Peel in the WAfL to begin with and Peel was horrifically unsuccessful before the alignment with Freo.

It works for Peel because it has helped them get out of the doldrums.

Notice as soon as Peel has success and the alignment succeeds, WAFL clubs demand changes to restrict and constrain their on field ability?

But apparently “there’s no issues with Peel/Freo it’s West Coast”.

Spare me.

Still making excuses for the Eagles Dom, always an out for the Eagles. And again blaming the WAFL.

It works for Peel because Freo work with peel they don't dictate to them.

Seriously I have no idea how the hell the Eagles are ever out of the top 4, we are the leaders in everything.
Honestly tell me how we are where we are with such excellence in all areas of football management?

You seem to think I’m an apologist for the club, I’m not.

Im just pointing to real and reasonable grievances with the WAFL in relation to how they’ve handled standalone West Coast team in the WAFL, and dispute your rosy view of the Freo/Peel relationship with the WAFL.

Its not that its a rosey view it's just that it clearly works much better than our's does and anything we have ever done. We have tried many different formulas and all of them have ended up with the WCE sooking.

Would it be better for everyone if we just hand back the licence and align with a WAFL club?*

*Loan cash to / invest in a 3rd party to create a WAFL club that can play under the same set of rules as Peel.

We could then pump cash into academy and colts development etc. under the guise of investments, not soft cap.

In order to have the same set of rules as Peel, this hypothetical new WAFL club would need to have an entire feeder zone.

Which, as every grassroots football club in the state is already zoned to one of the existing WAFL clubs, would mean taking some of their zones off them.

Good luck with that.

Pretty much sums up about another 4 to 5 threads on the board right now.

I just respect the people that have the energy and motivation to speak about the Eagles right now.

We're going to have a super young list that will need mature structure and standards around them for a few years before the list depth comes back. We can't dish them up a shit sandwich week in, week out and expect the kids to develop through the B's.

Honestly, looking through the recruitment rules in place for our WAFL team, it seems prudent to add our voice to the reserves league pitch.

If all clubs participating in a national reserves comp have list accommodations such as creating a Category C rookie layer. (Cat C's wouldn't be eligible to play any AFL matches but could be promoted in the event of LTI etc.) We would see improved standards across the league. The talent pool nationally would increase as more potentials get a look at a professional system.

U18's is its own beast. Maybe we could try to mimic the US sports college approach? Basically get around the whole WAFL catchment zone shit show by getting them in their school league?

For it to work, I'd suggest basing our Academy from a privately owned highschool in close proximity to our facilities and having the program run through there. Do one skills session a week with our main listers to give them a taste of what AFL standards are.

Maybe even have some guys get regular senior reserves game time in home matches in their draft years?

Not poking the cashflow bear that's consumed the last couple of pages, but I think we could actually turn the WCE into an even bigger financial and social beast by spending up on this approach. We have the cash and (currently) brand image to make it work.

All clubs will act out of self-interest of course. But who’s the decision-maker here, the WAFC? They need to be the adult in the room. Surely population growth is highly relevant in determining if another team can be supported.

Thanks for the explanation mate, I was not aware of the restrictions around targeting players, I can see that that setup over the medium to longer term would affect the club as a whole.
its a big reason why the West Coast management seriously looked at leaving the WAFL and joining the VFL

Hoping for a decent showing against a weakish Sth Freo side this week. At worst we need to see some results from our WAFL side to get some hope this year.

Midfield of Hall, Gaff, Sheed, Trew and Culley with Barnett rucking.

Lack of key forwards and backs will be our issue.

With the AFL side named and assuming no changes to Tuesday’s injury list these are the expected players available for WAFL - 12 of them

Backs: H Edwards, Witherden, Baker

Mids: Barnett, Gaff, Sheed, Johnston, Trew, Hall

Forwards: Livingstone, Dewar, Culley

I’ve assumed Johnston returns to Perth and that Jones remains in Adelaide as the emergency rather than fly either Gaff or Dewar over

Think we might ease Culley in up forward rather than straight into the midfield in his first game back

Overall, a touch on the short side but hopefully enough there to be competitive

Is Ryan back this weekend?

Looking forward to seeing how Culley goes.

Ryan back next week according to this weeks injury report

All of them named in the side bar Gaff and Dewar who are AFL emergencies but presumably will come in.

Will be Johnston’s WAFL debut.

Liam was speaking to a close friend and told him he would play WAFL in round 3 (Round 5 AFL) and then look to be selected in the AFL side the following week. Time will tell if that is how it plays out, but he is certainly too good to play WAFL for a sustained period.

Academy rules are a big problem though, If the Eagles had the same rules as Gold Coast, GWS, Brisbane around drafting ( match bids sooner )then I'm sure the club would be spending more money and effort.

Dont care how good a player he is , but every player should be going back to the WAFL to get that fitness in.
