West Coast need an elite clearance midfielder. Who is it and what do they need to give up?

people will laugh at this but i think jones from st kilda would be perfect for where the eagles are at. he runs all day, runs out games, is hard at it. would help take the pressure off of kerr and priddis and best of all he would be cheap cheap cheap
If he's so good why don't you need him? Your midfield is not much better than West Coast's.

were rebuilding. we'd probably want to keep him TBH. would be top 5 in our b&f right now. but was throwing up some unconventional cheaper options west coast should look at

And we basically got Cripps for that.
To be honest, both parties will probably benefit from that.
Koby should do well at the Dogs and Cripps already looks like he might stay in our 22 for much of this year.

Now back to Griffen, what'll he cost?
I'm prepared to part with Sheppard and a 2nd round pick.

Not sure if serious, you'd have to part with far more than what you would be willing to give.

From memory, Hawthorn gave Port Pick 8 and 15 for Shaun Burgoyne. You'd think Griffen who is probably coming into the prime of his career now would be worth at the very least that.

Would you want to part with Naitanui or Kennedy? I think not.

yeah ok. more than likely someone like gaff + 1st rounder. thats if he is out of contract and wants to go.

people dont overrate other clubs' fringe players, who have been in system for 3-4 years and cant get a game. thats like a bulldogs player saying koby stevens+2nd rounder for Lecras. you think clubs are stupid? bulldogs arent freo. or more lately, they arent melbourne.

Hey all,

West Coast are in desperate need of an elite clearance mid, preferably an explosive one (hard to come by). Kerr is on his last legs and Priddis is to one dimensional to be the number 1 mid at West Coast. One stat that surprised me on the weekend was that WCs tallest mid was Scott Selwood at 186cm while Freos smallest mid was Crowley at the same height. Mundy, Fyfe and Barlow are all 190+ giving them a distinct advantage in the centre clearances when it mattered. Brad Ebert is probably the player we are missing most at the moment although playing both he and Priddis could have caused problems. We wouldnt have been able to play all 3 of Kerr, Priddis and Ebert.

Over the last couple of years I have wanted us to go hard at an elite midfielder but it seems we have prefered to try and develop our own. This failed with both Stevens and Swift leaving at the end of last year and Ebert the previous year. If West Coast were to go out at the end of this season and try to pick up an elite mid, who would it be?

I'd love to get Bennel but being under contract and one of the best young mids going around he'd cost a huge amount
Rich would be a good get but is he too similar to our other young mids? He is out of contract but not a free agent so would cost quite a lot
Dale Thomas is one that we could try and get being a free agent. He hasnt really had a decent run at starting in the middle for Collingwood and I'm not sure of his clearance stats but he is the x-factor type mid we seem to be missing

Anyway, would love peoples opinion on who would be a good fit for West Coast, suggestions both fanciful and those that we could realisticaly afford.

first of all, post quality west coast players you would be prepared to trade for a quality clearance midfielder

if you turn around and basically name a lot of fringe players well.. then your answer is you wont get anyone

and also like to remind " C + C + 2nd pick = A grade midfielder" does not exist in reality, you hear this non stop being proposed, it never happens so dont bother trying to say sheppard + pick 2 for ur good player

So basically add ANOTHER slow, one paced midfielder who can't really kick to all the other slow, one paced midfielders that we already have? No thanks

get rid of your tall forwards + Stop drafting talls and stop drafting mids if you want a strong midfield. I don't see it happening but we'd be a good side to trade with - oversupply of mids and plenty of big bodies but to small up forward

not sure you could call jones one paced. runs all day, which is half your issue with your current crop of younger mids. wins contested ball as well

Freo draft mids, We draft talls, it's how things work. Pity our clubs will never trade.

So, you don't know what one paced means and you don't actually know the issue with our mids (it's not their ability to run)...yeah, we'll pass on Jones, thanks.

You could of easily had Fyfe and Barlow right now.

Darling should end up just as good a player except he's got 7 more years left than griffen. Would be a terrible trade for wce in our current position. Brown is also crucial to our future after glass retires.

Seriously underrating Griff, if he played in a decent team on this years form he'd be talked about in the Pendlebury, Mundy, Murphy bracket.

And you could've taken Jack Darling instead of Jayden Pitt.

That is true... But I would rather Quentin Lynch on a 2-3 year contract.

Yes Darling is 191cm and 91 kg, do you classify him as a Key Forward or a 2nd/3rd tall?

Lynch is 194cm and 102kg. Hes a proper key forward and a useful ruckman.

I do rate Darling, but even if you wanted to trade him, you guys would offer too much.

I see your point of View... I agree that Griffen for Darling would not be a fair trade. Griffen is 26-27 and easily has 4-5 years of good football left.

Darling is only 20 and has developed well in 2 years. You know as well I do it takes a good 3-4 years of development to produce a good KPP. Zac Clarke at freo is a good example.

Darling and a 3rd round pick for Griffen and a 2nd round pick?

Dont know if he has been mentioned but what about David Myers from Essendon, he's a big midfielder 191cm's 90kg's no elite clearance machine but might be a nice fit for West Coast. I'm pretty sure he only signed a 1 year deal with the Bombers last year and is a WA boy.

Luke Parker for Hurn

Crap trade. Swans would win that easily. Luke Parker is good, but hasn't played enough games to justify this trade.Parker has only played 30 games in 2 and a half seasons.

Hurn is 26 and has played 120 games in 8 years and if his contract runs out this season, he is a free agent as he is pick 13 in the 2005 draft.

Parker would be worth a first rounder 20 year old mid that's shown a fair bit!

True but it would be a bit odd for West Coast to make a major play for a Victorian. If he was from WA though... then West coast would consider it.

Eagles have traded heavily to Lure some players back home to the west in the past. Tyson Stenglein is one, Daniel Chick is another.
