Hurn retiring last year would’ve netted us the next player after Long? Who was?

If by the halfway point he’s not up to it, I’m confident he’ll retire, open up a MSD spot, and get us a free swing at the next Culley type.

Calm down.

My comment has nothing to do with our theoretical draft pick after Long taking Hurns position in the back line. You might need to calm down with connecting your dots.

We've already got the players on our list who could be prioritized into Hurns position. They may not be equal to Hurn in all facets of their game but they stand less chance of ever getting there while he's blocking the road and chipping the ball to the boundary after the oppo have flooded back.

Rubbish.

Redden was a standout in his first years at Brissie.

Top 5 in Brissie’s F & B multiple times, regularly over 30 possessions and adapted to a different role at WC.

Copped a fair bit of criticism about his early career at WC and he was easily outperforming O’Neill best.

O’Neill is a C- and wouldn’t get a game anywhere else.

O’Neill, Rotham, Witho add nothing to our future and that is why you drop down until you can stock up with exciting kids like Hough, Bazzo, Ginbey, Hewett, Chesser

Don't disagree with much of this.

O'Neil tries and does his best with the limited skillset/attributes he's got, but probably doesn't really cut the mustard at the top level after 5 years in the system

Ditto Rotham. Bizarre that bloke still has another whole year of that contract after this. He owes his manager a carton, surely. Been on the outer for ages.

Witherden might do something somewhere else, but after being on the outer at Brisbane and now failing to cement a spot here after they gave him away to us, kinda shows he's probably cooked. Really pissed me off tonight. Fluffed basic kicks, slow as treacle. Not sure what his 1 wood even is anymore. This is all after he "impressed the club this pre season" mind you. He accumulates the ball a bit in defense I guess, but to what end? Portion of those are freebies from kickouts as well.

. He is however very good at getting the ball, overheard and kicking goals. Ginbey is one of the most athletically blessed players in the game but his kicking whilst mostly at it's best tonight, he will have worse kicking nights and he isn't great overheard or at this stage a natural accumulator and outside player. Hewett will need a couple of years to develop but has a great all round game as well as being very athletically gifted (although not top 5 in the league like Ginbey) and will need to focus his development on endurance, consistency and playing his role for the team. Hewett's balanced midfield ability and elite skills, goal kicking ability and when on, ability to accumulate inside or out will bring a really balanced inside trio.
Great analysis as usual WCE_phil , just wondering where you've overheard all this?

Hanging around the WCE box again?

One thing about Jamieson is that he is just too slow with ball in hand. Kicking for a big guy sure, but **** me if he didnt take 2 seconds too long to get a fist on the pill. I think he will eventually make a decent backup WAFL ruck. Vardy level would be a great outcome for us, as Barnett/Williams hold the AFL spots

That passage of U/10s handballs with about 7:15 remaining in the second quarter is just laughable on the replay. Didn’t notice it at the game but that was f#%king amateur hour.

Chesser, Jones, Cole and then Sheed all muff regulation handpasses with a nice little Crippsesque fumble from an absolutely cooked Gaff thrown in for good measure.

The shorter distance Witho tries to kick the worse the outcome.

Jamo was alright in the ruck and puts in an effort but he has no idea how to position himself under a long ball. More often than not didn't even get to the contest never mind impact it. If you've been playing footy for a dozen years and still don't know where the ball is going when it comes off the boot it's likely you never will.

Pretty average performance from the senior players (again).

HOPEFULLY the khents were just going through the motions.

Pretty sick of seeing them just plodding along tho.

Missed the boat retaining shuey as the captain for another season.

Would be happy to see gaff, shuey, sheed, hurn having stints in the WAFL.

I think Hurn earned the right to decide if he wanted to go on - he was still a very solid defender in 2022.

The concern was he’d be going on one year too many, unfortunately that concern seems well placed about now. Looked his age tonight

I think out of our veterans that are concerning, Hurn is the least.

He started last year patchy and became probably our second best player.

Shuey and Gaff are the real concerns and in an area where we have talent that needs to be developed.

Gaff's body and ability are gone, it's sad but it is what it is. The stand rule and protected zone have further eroded his value.

Midfield just not up to it, nothing we didnt know. The credits in the bank crew will still have to shoulder most of the load as our youngsters arent ready just yet.

Hopefully by mid season we can see Culley in the team playing at least 50% midfield, Ginbey playing more minutes (only 56% game time today) and 50% mid time, Chesser playing more minutes (only 61% game time) and Hewett get the odd full game.

Yeo can rotate anywhere, Shuey rotate half back, Kelly and Sheed rotate forward and Gaff may as well be out of the team.

Those of us that severely overreact to the score lines in practice matches are hilarious. From a strength & conditioning point of view we have had a new look coming into 2023 and that is to be more sensible with loading, getting onto niggles quicker and highly individualised programs to ensure we get the most out of every player despite any challenges they have faced building up into the season proper.

I have a background in this area and know that teams look at conditioning in plenty of different ways dependent on their S&C staff. It is a distinct possibility we have either come right off a (higher than the opposition tonight) running phase leading into the game so our boys were pooped coming in and were simply topping that off before a reduced cardio phase / taper prior to Rd 1 OR were simply going at a slightly lower intensity in a planned way as they wind down that phase earlier than Adelaide who may be on a different training swing at this stage.

It’s very hard to gauge what in particular is happening with training loads when two teams collide in the pre season and how the game is viewed by the respective S&C teams coming in. Typically teams that are cherry ripe at this stage burn out earlier in the season. Carlton used to be notorious for being hot in pre season games then stinking it up when the real stuff went down. Gold Coast royally stuffed it with a young list full of run early in seasons for a few years in succession not too long ago. Just chill. Very likely you will see some senior players perform a fair bit more admirably in round one and beyond than what we saw tonight 🧘🏻‍♂️

Well, that was an interesting game. Crows were really switched on, a well oiled machine ready to hit the season running so to speak. Made us look slightly underwhelming? Were we really trying flat out to win, the look of anger on Simmo's face while talking to his minions, suggested they had targets to achieve, if not goals. Not happy.

I think I'll wait till round one before I have a full public cheesy meltdown, let the dust settle on this one.
Some good players were out, some played in the 2nds. The usual suspects played like themselves as usual and seemed to defy all the talk of new game plans and faster transition and (choke) synergy. At times it looked like a comedy as we fumbled and bumbled while the Crows cut through us like a hot knife. Still lots of panic-bombies to nowhere and handballs to players under pressure 2metres away. Crows not so much.

Some kids put some seniors to shame. When you look at Kelly's halfhearted attempts and lacklustre game, you can't believe it's true, let alone his value -compared to Ginbey? So maybe there's more to it than meets the eye.
But if this is what's being served up for round one, god help us. Same old-same old.
I understand it will take time, it's a rebuild right. But there has to be visible change, otherwise it's all just fancy words and phrases. Can you teach old dogs new tricks? Maybe it's all about work loads and conditioning and where we're at with our own program, would explain some of the performances.

I also understand that our preseason losses have been meaningless in the past, with regards to the season.
Gaff = Yawn. (was there really gastro around, or was that a joke?)
Ginbey = plug+play. Chesser+Hewett will both take time. Hunt=good find.
Hope the team brings the pressure and tackles in their sports-bags for the 1st round? (gonna need it)

S&C background

Training loads imo more important than winning in Feb / early March. Clubs prioritise vastly different things in the build up to R1. Some care more about loading, others are focused on increased ‘synergy’ on the park. That said Geelong are cooked after the debacle they dished up yesterday, may as well fold the club

Hope you're right but i dont think ppl are overreacting to this game rather a continuation of the last season and a half where weve been abysmal

The flipside is it’s the other way around and Adelaide are managing training loads better than us at this stage and we were flat out playing to win haha. Last year way too many factors stuffing the season up so can’t base very much on that at all. We are in a far better space now to start climbing a bit this year imo

Man.

Imagine a prime Ginbey + Reid + Heweitt. That would be the most campaigners I've seen since Brisbane 2003.

Alarming how Sheed has regressed preseason. Pity I holed him as top 2 WCE mid during transition period with Kelly
