Houghton would be a massive blow for Fremantle, she not only kicks goals herself, but she straightens them up, which all makes for a much more effective and functional forward line.
She would be a really good pick up for Port.
These new teams coming in will set the quality of the comp back 5 years, as the number of new players coming through of adequate quality, is way less than the new list spots that need filling.

The comp should have stayed at the original eight teams for a while longer I think. Then two teams added at a time every couple years. Strengthen the roots a bit and make sure the soil is fertile before adding more trees, so to speak.
I daresay money is more important to the AFL than the quality of the competition.
Adding teams meant additional X amount of revenue from memberships as fans from those AFL clubs will naturally flock to getting a woman's membership now they have a team (like we all did), compared to running with the original 8 teams and the skill standards of the competition actually getting better.
After 3 years of bottom table finishes without any improvement i'm considering letting my AFLW membership go next season. Just finding it frustrating being a member, looking at some of the decisions the club has made, and the lack of development with it's players making them not even competitive.

People have criticised WCE for the AFLW program being an afterthought but they're clearly working overtime to ensure that the women's team is as big of a basketcase as the men's team is.

So much for the virtue that the Kelly Girls said they hold dear, when they were first recruited by us - loyalty.
I guess loyalty can only put up with so much incompetence and disarray.

That said I am relieved that with Niamh leaving, we weren’t left with the consolation prize ….
Not So Amazing Grace.
I could accept keeping Grace on the list if the pair of them stayed, but with Niamh requesting a trade, then best that both move on.
The real worry here for me, is just what Ella Roberts is thinking watching this cluster …. unraveling before her and decide to nominate to be willing to move interstate, as Rowbottom did last year.
Bleak times at WCE at the moment, very bleak indeed.

While I enjoyed that read myself, I did shake my head and ask myself just why would you want to leave The Purps to join us? I wouldn’t have thought there was enough move available for mega contracts.
At the very least, we jack the contract prices up of the Purple top talent.
Giving them less coin available to poach our 1 good player away from us .

Is it worth pulling the trigger early then? Say we give our first, second and a player, (gabby is a WC supporter as an example). You get experience and four picks in a row of players who’ll stay. May be a few extra picks as well once the expansion signing rules are sorted out.
Is the extra development worth more than a year or two of Ella?
(Ftr, I’ve been big on you lot getting some sort of assistance, and never expected to even be close to getting Ella)

We were better off entering the comp ten years from now, when the seed was in place and talent abundant. AFL got greedy and I'm not sure professional womens footy will survive as a result. Meh.

I do find it strange that the AFL is adding more teams when the quality is not really there yet.

While the quality of the league itself is still developing, its widespread implementation has had a noticeable effect on the number of girls playing footy at school age. Where some schools used to struggle to fill a girls side from 7s-12s, generally they can now fill both junior and senior sides. Plenty more exposure to the game in inter-school comps and carnivals. Bodes well for the league long term.
