"The West Australian Football Commission has admitted an embarrassing blunder led to the wrong player being handed the WAFLW’s rising star award. South Fremantle footballer Renee Morgan had been given the Cath Boyce Rising Star award at the Dhara Kerr medal night. But in what the WAFC has called simply an “error in the selection”, the award was actually meant to go to Peel Thunder’s Evie Cowcher.

Morgan has handed the award back, with Cowcher to now receive it at Peel Thunder’s own awards night on Friday. In a statement, the commission praised 16-year-old Morgan for her season and “generously” handing back the award. “Renee Morgan has displayed remarkable talent throughout the season and has shown true sportsmanship in a difficult situation,” the statement read.

“The WAFC thanks Renee and we wish her all the best in the Rogers Cup grand final this weekend.” Morgan played the final six games of the Bulldogs’ WAFLW campaign, including a 15-disposal and one-goal performance in a preliminary final defeat to East Fremantle at the weekend. Cowcher, a 19-year-old from Pinjarra, will now be officially recognised as the winner.

“The WAFC commends Evie Cowcher for her exceptional performance throughout the season, showcasing great skill and dedication on the field,” the statement went on to say. Claremont play East Fremantle in the WAFLW grand final on Saturday."

Oh dear what a mess, feel bad for both the girls Eve and especially Renee.

Feel for both young ladies. Evie missing out on the big night, and poor Renee being put in this situation. What I want to know is how this was picked up after the big night, something must have come up to make someone go back and double check. Didn't this happen at the Academy Awards a few years ago?

Thoughts on Bec Anderson (number 24 for Claremont)

She does not get enough of it meaning I am not sure how long she has played the game.

She was an 18 year old in an undersized Claremont line up and she reads the ball well. Takes on the physical stuff and has pretty good hands

Looks like someone with a couple of years in an elite programme could her make it. I sense she would only be a late pick so low risk

I saw her in the U16s All Stars game last year, thought she was great, couldn't understand why Claremont wouldn't elevate her until recently. Completely unsurprised that she's been really good since she came in. WAFLW coaches who prioritise the playing time of 25 year olds who will never make the AFLW, over 16 year olds who might, need to be given a stern talking to.

Watching the game on Saturday, Zippy Fish was great to watch. She is ferocious at the contest for her size. She was up against some hardened Claremont mids and really showed he high skill level. 26 disposals and 7 tackles from a 160 cm 17 year old is impressive. She appear to have pace to burn which normally means she is quick and does not fumble but her directness and taking on the contest makes her look even faster.

I want her in blue and gold.

It's not always the case that playing 16 year olds, even if they are very good, is in their long term interests.

Without dominating, I thought Georgie Cleaver was the pick of the EF talls. She had 12 disposals, 9 HO, 7 tackles and a goal. Importantly she was very good at bringing it to ground and the smalls at EF sharked it pretty well at her feet.

Now that we have Amy Franklin, we no longer need to take Cleaver with our first pick. That said, she would still be handy. Will Freo pick her as a like for like replacement of Amy??

It will be very interesting to see how Lauren Wakfer has come back from her ACL. How Lauren and Lakay work sharing the ruck will be interesting and can either deliver anything up front.

All this means is that Ella should have 2 other tall targets up from thereby reducing freeing her up.

Anyone kept an eye on Zoe Wakfer? She played only 1 WAFLW game for Soufs. I realise it was more the romance about the twins on the same night since we had "Suns like" abundance of early pick in the 2022 draft - so we took her so early.

A point of note - Hartill is now listed as a KPD not a ruck. Not sure what she was originally touted as but I had her pegged as ruck.

It will be interesting to se whether Gooch get a gig - she showed in the previous season how good she was at setting the backline structure. Slow and at 169, she is the Hurn type role.

Shilling and McDonald wave the KPD positions down. I liked the fact that Beth played her maximum 5 WAFLW games. Hit the scoreboard against East Perth but who didn't?

It was pleasing that some of the younger players got to get some WAFLW games in early in the season. Shilling, Bushby and Elkington all played their max 5 games while Britton Petrevski and Ella Smith also made some appearances.

I believe we’ve improved, so it’s wrong to assume others won’t, but this looks like a piss easy schedule and home ground advantage over the harder teams in the list?
First 6 games against teams that didn’t make the finals last year.
And 6 games in WA and only 4 interstate.
A dream draw and with this list now with a fair bit of talent, you should be a very good chance to make finals.

The draw sees up playing interstate:-

Gold Coast (finished 9th in 2022)
Sydney (finished bottom in 2022)
GWS (finished 1th in 2022)
Essendon (finished 10th in 2022)

I would feel confident that we are in with a decent chance with all bar the Drug Rats. A young team on the road will be a great chance to bond and develop team spirit.

It will provide hope. Something we are not used to at present with the AFL and Beagles.
