Good idea

Never really thought of that.

Could possibly play 3-4 home games a year at Manuka

Yes , read somewhere that they are looking at playing some games at Canberra especially in the beginning and with small crowds .
They realize that the Swans do have a following down and they could tap into that . Also I feel they are looking ahead and the possibility of it being a c
Canberra team if needed .

.

Apart from the mascot of a Sheep, wasn't RAMS also an acronym?

Something like: Riverina, Albury, Murray, not sure what the S was?

Your right but dont quote me but the S is probably Sydney.

Anyway Pioneers for me not to mention it is the name of the under 18s rep side for Western Syndey so it appears the logical choice.

Regardless of what they are called they will get my support wholeheartedly except when the play my Blue Boys. Be great to have a team to take the kids to support that represents their region.

I would go for something like Sydney Rams or Eastern Rams. The area has a sheep breeding history with Governor Macarthur.

If they go with a West Sydney image it has the potential to be branded with a negative socio-economic tag (whether it is warranted or not).

If they want broader appeal across NSW and other parts of Sydney then it has to have a broader name. If the market segment they chasing is only West Sydney then the name is fine.

I read the other day that the fast growing Hills District of Sydney has just left WSROC (a West Sydney local govt lobby group) for reasons that it does not see itself as part of Western Sydney. It is a part of Sydney the AFL is chasing for followers as it has money to spend on memberships and has no national sporting team for its residents to get behind.

A marketing dilemma that needs some thought.

I can't see the AFL ever going with something other than West or Western at the start of the name. To make them "Eastern" after all this promotion as a side from Western Sydney would turn too many people away.

I do like Rams as the name or maybe Pioneers because it does give that link with the already established football programs in NSW/ACT.

They have to call it West Sydney don't they?

It sounds so much better than Greater West/Western Sydney if your going to yell it out from the stands :)

The club's name officially is registered as West Sydney FC.
Nothing to stop them trading as the Westie (insert moniker).
In Sydney they are known as 'the westies'.
They will be referred as that by media in Sydney (along with their moniker) to differentiate them from Wests Tigers NRL or Wests - Cambelltown.

'Westie' also avoids any AFL confusion between West Coast Eagles, Western Bulldogs, and Westie Whatevers.

The anagram of GWS can become WSW, like WCE.

Aren't the Tigers Officially "West's Tigers" but it always gets printed as "Wests Tigers" so that magpie fans still have something to latch on to? I'm surprised it's lasted, especially given the downfall of the Northern Eagles when my Bear merged with Manly-Warringah.

Anyway.

Hills district is definitely not in the Westie demographic. There's a huge part of Sydney in the North West that doesn't fit into any of the accepted stereotypes (North Shore, Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Westies, South Sydney, Shire) Anything West of Chatswood, East of Parramatta, North of the Harbour and south of Kuringgai Chase National Park is a kind of limbo Area. The closer you get to Chatswood the more you think of yourself as North and the closer you get to Blacktown the more you think you're Westie. This includes the Hills district. If GWS try for the Hills they'll lose too much out Campbelltown way (the real West). If things go well for GWS in 60 years when league's the boutique sport your grandad watches then they can put two more teams up in sydney to grab South Sydney/Wollongong and North Sydney/Central Coast.

Anyway, West Sydney sounds better but it's 3 sylables which ain't that great for cheers. Western Sydney would be better for that, or Westies.

So SyneyGoose, if the Hills districters can suck it up to call the GWS team 'Westies', then we are on a winner. The Westies bit will only be the chant anyway (two sillibuls), the marketing and the moniker of 'Wolves' will be far more evident within the communities that make up the GWS area.

I'm sure that folks in Blue Mtns and Lithgow don't consider themselves 'Westies' , and neither do those up around Richmond. Remember that WSW will be anagram, West Sydney the official title, 'Westies' the chant, and Wolves the media moniker.

I think that gives folks of GWS a pretty wide range and chioce as to what they refer to the team as. The commentators won't be referring to the team as the 'West Sydney Wolves' (maybe only as they enter the field). After that, it will be Wolves this and Wolves that. :D
