Western Derby XXVII - Who will win and why?

our inability to man up anywere on the ground we continually allow
40m kicks to open people when they should have to kick to a contest

Happens time and time again.

Also our forward 50 always seems to be crowded like crazy but when the opposition goes forward there seems to be lots of space everywhere and generally the teams have a shot at goal.

frustrating

While the eagles are to be commended on their new-found culture, and general goody-two-shoesedness, I believe their football has suffered, since we all know they are a much better unit with a healthy assortment of criminals.

So my prediction is Freo by 8 points even though the eagles will get 738 possessions, 74 free kicks, and boo the Purple out of Jeffery for no apparent reason.

Funny thing is that at this stage of the season it seems both teams have gone backwards compared to previous seasons:(

If the Eagles line up as selected I will be astounded, four monsters plus Embely (190cm) and one small???????? It ain't gonna happen. McKinnely AND MacNamarra should come in for Hansen and Nicoski IMO.

Also Freo's half forward line looks weak as listed IMO.
Bell Tarrant Mayne versus
Hunter B Jones A Selwood or Hurn or Waters.....

Bell's last season, Tarrant out of form will get B Jones(Hunter too slow) and Mayne is playing his 2nd game.

Freo will miss Haselby BIG TIME this week, in the past he has smashed us in Derby's.

Before the season started I had Freo penciled in as winners but no Solomon, Haselby and lack of form has me reaching for a coin to toss.

Fremantle had our measure in the Preseason derby, I'm flailing around for reasons why this wouldn't be the case.Yes, we played a few young blokes and we were missing Kerr, but we were lucky they didn't punish us a lot worse than they did.Glass' fitness is currently the big ? for us. If he's not quite right then Pavlich will annihilate us.Rain + extra talls = bad.
I do hope Worsfold manages to grasp this before 2:10 tomorrow afternoon.

McKinley in for Hansen, we don't need two Centre Half Forwards. Big Red did well in the practise game against Essendon, and if he pulled another performance like that out of the bag then we'd be in good territory, though based on his form in the past fortnight I can't see it happening. Ever since he got his damn haircut.I'd love to have seen Masten V Palmer, it'd have given us a good idea where both of them are at compared to each other. As much as I'd like to see him in, like I said last week, he should start in his usual role in the centre, not as a forward, because his talents are wasted there, if we were going to drop a tall forward ie Hansen, then I'd rather bring in Ben McKinley who looks to be in good touch after his performance in the WAFL last week. I'd like to see Masten come in for Fletcher, but I can't see the coaching staff sharing my point of view.

Taz Tarrant is a bit like Lynch is some regards, dangerous when he's on, near useless when he's not, though I think even Lynch is more consistant than Tarrant which is saying something. Josh Carr, what do I say about him? Seems to kick his game into another gear every time he plays us. I'm curious as to who will get Stenglein's first tag. Bell has been named at HF, whether or not he'll play there is another story. This brings me to the result.

Fremantle come into the match as favourites. They won the last H&A A derby as well as the nothing-match known as the Preseason Derby. I think that we'll have a hard time containing some of their guys and if we're to beat them then we have to be more accountable all around the ground. I'm sure they know this based on last week's pathetic display.

CaffMop's prediction:
West Coast by 11.
Ross Glendinning medal: Dean Cox.

There are too many passengers in both teams at the moment. Although, somebody has to win, such is the nature of competition. Looking at both lists I think Freo has more potential to turn it on. There would have to be either a huge form reversal by a lot of players, or this could be a pretty forgettable standard of football.

The Saints went in tonight with 3 real talls down forward and looked like Christmas as they "stretched the Bulldogs defence" - something the Eagles like to think they can do occasionally (it never works). That was up until the Bulldogs defenders worked out that they could body block the big guys run at the ball or run them under it with body pressure. After Qtr time the Bulldogs kicked about 18 goals to the Saints 5. This was in pristine windless conditions. The Eagles have to be absolutely nuts to even think about using 3 or more big slow cumbersome forwards; they'll get flogged if they do try it. It's OK for a ruck to drift foward for a minute or two, but we need 4 mobile guys down forward. If not we'll be like the Saints and get run over easily. And yes, it could be wet and windy ... best hope the Eagles ring a couple of changes before bounce down and switch tall for mobile players!

woosha seems very sllooowwwwww to make changes.why not put lynch into the guts?? hes very hard to tackle and he can kick 50 left or right off one step.we need a change pf tactics. why not fletcher on carr??he doesnt like people running at him in a pack but hes great running alongside somebody and hes a good niggler.mckinley deserves a shot.go eagles

Probably because we take too long to move it in. Holding possession to 'set it up' does not work for us at pres. We dont have that syncthink between the forward leading and a good quick pass.

I know its a mobile game, but it would be nice for the midfield to know who the frig is the full forward.

unless we can get a serious amount of run and carry from Braun, Hunter, Hurn and Brett Jones then we will get flogged.
Add Stenglein and Nicoski. When these all run to support each other it is good pressure. If we just play average, they will pressure us, our kicking will suffer, and you have four unemployed forwards.

I also think we got use it as serious tackling practice. Really commit. Even if it means a couple of injuries...the club psyche needs to HUNT, not be the hunted, whether we win or not. If we get physically overwhelmed, other teams will keep serving up the same tactic, after seeing Adel then Freo both succeed. Then you got to reverse that eventually...better to start tomorrow.
