I agree with you on that one fxd. The guy should have been honest and said he assumes it was Peter Matera 30. With the mercure and swan logos on the jumper I would assume the Guernsey came to him framed, he may have been told by the auctioneer on the day it was a matera PI.
I have this happen to me before, I think the bloke knew the Jumper was of a fringe player, but most people assume that the frame will never be opened so it is fair game to talk a jumper up.

The sleeves tucked up were also a surprise, did you pick that up Mike before opening the frame?

Yeah I could tell from the photos it was a long sleeve, plus a bit of research through here and a few other sites, showed a fair few of the other pre season centenary's were long sleeve too, so I assumed it was.

Looking into the guernsey itself a bit more, I dont know if we ever wore the navy centenary one in the pre season, all our games were away and the only pics I could see through AFL photo's of the sekem ones were the royal away. So I'm guessing they framed up a whole heap of the un-used ones and auctioned them off, gave them to sponsors.

The other long sleeve ones I've seen seem to only have 5 or 6 sigs on them, Haydos has a number 31 long sleeve, and his has the sigs in almost the identical spots, all the players the same except mine has cuz and I think his has McKenna.

I was really spewin when I first took it out of the frame, but the more I thought about it, the less I was worried about the number, and the more I was happy with the guernsey itself.

Local footy team, picked these up from the club on Thurdsay, on the left is the standard home guernsey, on the right is a 2012 Rivaly Round guernsey match worn.
Nah wasn't me, $30 incl. postage is pretty decent though.

There is another one up there ;)

We played 7 matches in that pre-season. Surely the Navy got a run. As for the navy Guernsey they are actually the 1995 Guernsey with centenary badge sewn on, On all the other 1996 pre season Guernseys you can see the stitch marks from the old AFL badge.

February 5 Practice WCE Intraclub Match Subiaco Oval
February 10 Lighting Carnival Richmond v WCE Waverly
February 11 Practice WCE v Adelaide Waverley Park
February Practice WCE Intraclub Match
February 25 Ansett Cup WCE v Fremantle Darwin
March 6 Ansett Cup Footscray v WCE Waverley Park
March 13 Ansett Cup St Kilda v WCE Waverley Park

Yeah I was aware of that, and you can see the outline of the old AFL badge on this one too, not quite as pronounced as a few others I've seen but it's there.

Okay, see if this sounds right, based upon what we know:

CUB was the sponsor from 1997-99 and in 2000 Brisbane switched sponsors and had a different collar than this one used for the first 3 post-merger years (which is, of course, how I narrowed down the years in the first place).

http://www.bomberblitz.com/mero/images/Brisbane-Sponsors.gif

But as West_Coast_Eagles pointed out, that's the new (current) AFL logo, which wasn't in use until 2000.

Apparently the Pies and Blues played on New Year's Eve 1999, introducing the league's "new look intended to coincide with the new millennium."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Australian_Football_League#21st_century

So, after the 1999 season ended, the AFL clubs were instructed that they had to begin using the new logo for the next season and "new millennium", thus were manufacturing jumpers for retail sales for the 2000 season with that logo and, at least for Collingwood and Carlton, also making player issue/game worn jumpers, some time late in 1999.

The 1999 Brisbane Lions retail jumpers had the old AFL logo, sponsor (CUB) and collar.

The 2000 Brisbane Lions retail jumpers had the new AFL logo, sponsor (AAPT) and collar.

Based upon that, I assume this jumper was made late in 1999 or early in 2000, prior to AAPT signing on as a new sponsor.

Perhaps it went like this: As soon as the new sponsor deal was signed, they would have pulled these jumpers (with the CUB sponsor, and which had the old collar and the new AFL logo in advance of the 2000 season) from the shelves. Along with the new sponsor, they must have decided to change the collar, too (perhaps at Sekem's suggestion?).

So, this jumper with CUB and new AFL logo would have been for sale only a short period of time, probably no sooner than New Year's Eve 1999 (which appears to be the night they unveiled the league's "new look intended to coincide with the new millennium" and no later than AAPT signed on as their sponsor, which would have been (according to footyjumpers.com) prior to the start of the pre-season in (February?) 2000 (because AAPT was their sponsor for the enitre season).

?! :D

Do you think that's a reasonable assumption?

Edit: I just noticed, it has the "AFL LICENSED PRODUCT" on the tag using the old AFL logo and Sekem's logo, so I would assume it to be legit, made prior to Sekem changing their tag. I would say it's logical they would have used up any tags they hadn't yet sewn into jumpers rather then throw them away when they made the tags with the new AFL logo. Or, possibly Sekem had the tags made for them and the new ones hadn't arrived yet.
Who buys a footy jumper in January :drunk:

Looks like at least one person did. :p

Besides, we get them however/whenever we can over here. Can't buy AFL stuff anywhere except online from the States. :(
Yeh that must suck!

Interesting hypothesis, unfortunately I can't really help you out. Mero should know a bit more. What I will say is that the Sekem replica collars were almost always v-necks anyway – so there wouldn't have been a change between 1999 and 2000.

It's a retail replica. Sekem made jumpers with the same vee neck collars, never in the style that Puma or Russell made with the pinched neck.
As for which year, yeah I would think 2000.
Why CUB and not AAPT, maybe because they'd made them with the CUB logo and wanted to sell them
Or maybe, and this is my guess, as an official AFL sponsor Telstra might have somehow arranged that their competitors logo appeared on as few jumpers as possible.
So Sekem went with last year's sponsor, and who'd notice?
Well, us, 14 years later.

I ordered a St Kilda jersey with my surname and number on it last week, arrived today :D. I have to say, ISC did a profound job of heat-pressing everything on evenly, well worth the money.

I've looked into this a little bit, and the preferred nomenclature is Guernsey or Jumper.
Jersey was a part of the history of Australian Football in the very earliest days.
Jerseys were replaced by canvas Jerkins in the late 1890s, which in turn were replaced by Wool Guernseys in the early 20th Century.
Wool was replaced by Acrylic in the early 1970s, and this was replaced in the late 1990s by polyester blended with natural fibres.
The catch-all category for all of these articles of clothing, in Australian vernacular, is Jumper.

To be fair, that video in your website thread of the Essendon guernsey being designed at Adi... has the woman referring to a "jersey" constantly at the end, so I guess the difference is beginning to disappear in these days of sublimated jumpers

If it's all stretched in the back then send a letter of complaint to David Zaharakis ;)

Picked up the Crows' Indigenous round guernsey this morning. There aren't many left apparently, just the ones they want to sell tomorrow at the game!

Anyone ever come across one of these Nike jumpers before?
I'm assuming it must be a sample that was made up. It's the exact same as the Carlton PI jumpers

Is there meant to be a picture attached?

By the looks of it, Id say its either a sample jumper that they send out to customers. Or its something they made up to show how the template looks once printed and sewn together
