What midfielder would "walk" into the Geelong team ATM?

There are plenty of midfielders who are better than Corey, he never gets the tag and gets a alot of cheap possesions in the backline.
Assuming this is the midfield for the best 22 in the league
Other than Ablett, there are 5 spots which could be vacated by plenty of midfielders better than Corey.
Do you suggest opposing teams should tag corey instead of Ablett? How many teams to do you know that play with two hard taggers? He doesn't get tagged because he is not damaging as ablett, wow what a crime.
You should also watch some more Geelong matches because Corey is far from a sheepdog who gets cheapies in the backline.

Although it isn't corey's fault that he never gets the no.1 tag, "You can only beat your opposition" his ability as a midfielder seems to be overated by one eyed cats supporters. He is a good player but wouldn't be considered to be a superstar midfielder. In the matches I have seen corey, it is of my opinion that he does get a few cheap possies in the backline just like his pal Jimmy Bartel.

"Brace myself for a on coming geelong barrage about my comment on Bartel"

Corey is equal tenth for total tackles in the whole competition for the season. Not a bad effort for a guy that "gets lots of cheap possessions in the backline." The player he shares equal tenth with is Jimmy Bartel, without doubt one of the hardest players in the competition. Incidentally the first Essendon player in the list is equal 61st.

James Kelly, for those that don't rate him, is sixth in tackles and 14th in goal assists. He is easily our most improved player in the past two seasons and at most clubs would be one of the top two or three midfielders, if he wasn't the best. A lot of the midfielders that are being put forward as better come nowhere near him, especially in defensive pressure. Dal Santo, for instance, has about the same number of disposals and goals but only about half as many tackles. Besides, Dal Santo has already been dropped from the St Kilda midfield this year.

Oooohhh FFS, every team in the AFL has about 10 players that rotate through the midfield, you know this, stop being a dick.
"What midfielder would walk into the Geelong team?" There would be 20-30 Mids that could walk into the team and do a better job at rotating through Geelongs Midfield, as great as it is.

Thank you someone with some sense.

Kelly is a HFF therefore not a midfielder. What a load of nonsense of course his a midfielder. He is not a stay at home Forward, when the ball gets bounced he goes staright in the middle.

Marc Murphy
Nick Stevens
Chris Judd
Luke Ball
Lenny Hayes
Dane Swan
Scott Thompson
Simon Black
Luke Power
Kane Cornes
Shaun Burgoyne
Brent Harvey
Luke Hodge
Sam Mitchell
Brad Sewell
Chance Bateman
Brett Kirk
Adam Goodes
Adam Cooney
Matthew Boyd
Daniel Cross
Brad Green
Daniel Kerr
Brett Deledio
Nathan Foley

And a handful of HFF's that spend quite a bit of time in the midfield.

The question is which of these midfielders would walk into Geelong's team. Any of these guys would be preferred to James Kelly and Corey Enright. A select few preferred over Corey, Ling and Selwood.

If you were prepared to reshuffle the team a bit and look at guys who play off the flanks a bit more and less regular players; Stokes, Prismall, Hunt, Varcoe and Wojcinski wouldn't get as much of a look-in.

After looking over Geelong's team a bit, what strikes me is how balanced the team is. Midfielders aren't playing out of position up forward and down back like what happens at my club. Each player suits their position perfectly. Certainly Kelly and Wojcinski were once midfielders, but their current roles are perfect for their style of play.

Yup, but as I've already explained, my take on the thread was that the OP was talking specifically about the midfield. As otherwise his suggestion that there's only 6 players that could get a gig is ridiculous.

Who would he replace? Ablett? no. Bartel? no. Corey? no. Ling? no. Selwood? possibly, but no.

Selwood is not in the top 20 Midfielders in the AFL, yet. Of course Deledio would be in front of him, Selwood is an excellent young player who looks set to become an "A" grader, but atm there are plenty in front of him.

Ablett
Bartel
Hodge
Judd
Kerr
And a tagger - Ling, who's competition would come from: Sewell, Kirk, Rawlings, The Crow tagger??, and if you wanted another attacking mid, players like: B Harvey, Power, Cooney, Deledio.

Whilst Geelongs Midfield has plenty of individual brilliance, it's the combination that works, there Midfield rotation is #1 atm, but individually there are plenty who could get in.

The occasional Geelong fan breaking ranks to lather themselves up isnt healthy for the others.

There are a minimum of 20 AFL midfeilders that would force their way into the Geelong team ahead of the individual parts on display.

When a team is winning well even the average players look good...and their reputations prosper.

Ablett and Bartel the only two that would keep their slots with the entire comp available for selection. I class Chapman as a flanker otherwise he would be included.

As a TEAM though u wouldnt want to make changes so idiotic inferences about how good each is can get made by the more exciteable types.

Just about everything including how good u look is dependent upon whether the team is winning or losing. They are playing great footy so u wouldnt want to swap ANY right now.

Didak would have to walk in because he couldn't run with whatever the hell is wrong with his groin. Swan would shamble in like a crippled yabby.

But I can't think of a single Pie that would actually get a game there. Maybe Pendles? More for his potential than his form though. Still as a team we go OK.

Hehe good post. Yabby hehehe.

if you are just talking about who would get a game in geelongs starting 18 in the midfield than it would be very few

geelong best midfield would be ablett, bartel, corey, ling and sellwood.

these players would get a game
hodge
black
cooney
kerr
harvey
mitchell

thats it

Judd's not up to it?:eek::D

Just for everyones info, the main reason I started this thread was a one eyed Essendon supporter was trying to say McVeigh would "walk into the Cats midfield.

Up to page 3 and haven't seen his name yet.

Midfield is all about the team and the game plan. Any midfielder coming in would have learn all about it so there would be a lot of work involved, meaning they wouldn't necessarily just 'walk in'.

Corey, Kelly, Ling, Selwood and possibly Bartel wouldn't be racking up the numbers they are if they didn't know the game plan and if they didn't have each other to bounce off.

That's not saying I wouldn't mind having Judd and Hodge at the club.

no im not all of those would be better than selwood in that side

ok maybe not murphy but the rest definites

There is no way these players would get a game over Selwood:

Cotchin
Gibbs
Stanton
Wells
Smith
McLean
Jones
Salopek

Dal Santo would be close to not getting a game, as would some of the others on that list. I don't think you've seen Selwood play much.

I'd say that Hodge and Cooney would probably get a game ahead of Corey, no disrespect though to Corey of course. Ling and Kane Cornes are on par as possession gathering taggers so Kornes misses out IMO

The best midfield in the AFL would look like this IMO.

Ruckman: Dean Cox
Mid 1: Gary Ablett
Mid 2: Chris Judd
Mid 3: Adam Cooney
Mid 4: Daniel Kerr
Mid 5: Simon Black
Mid 6:: Luke Hodge

I rate all of these guys higher then Corey, Bartel, Ling, Selwood, Kelly, Ottens etc.

There is plenty of guys that you could fit into that Geelong midfield at the expense of other already in it.

This is being fairly conservative, but I'd be confident these guys would get a go over the 'last' midfielder (Corey/Kelly/Selwood):

ADE: Scott Thompson, Simon Goodwin
BRI: Simon Black, Luke Power
COL: Alan Didak
CAR: Chris Judd, Nick Stevens
HAW: Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Shane Crawford
KAN: Brent Harvey
PTA: Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes
RIC: Nathan Foley, Brett Deledio
STK: Lenny Hayes, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo
SYD: Adam Goodes, Brett Kirk
WCE: Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr
WBD: Adam Cooney, Ryan Griffen, Scott West
