Opinion What player has surprised you with their career?

I thought Max Gawn was the classic 'Big man only getting a game because he's big' (of which Richmond and probably every other club have had plenty).
So to turn into almost the #1 player (not just ruckman) in the comp was pretty impressive in my eyes.

Retired now, but Callum Urch always surprised

waiting for DD

Max Gawn surely the poster boy of this thread.

A big lumbering oaf who looked best suited as a real-life substitute to one of those plastic men you put on the mark for kicking practice at training.

Transformed into, not only the premier ruck of the comp, but arguably one of the game’s top two or three players.

Yeah Max Gawn 100% surprised me

A lumbering tall kid, with no athleticism, bung knees and couldn't kick to save himself

Now a 5 x AA, premiership captain, duel b&f winner and AFLCA winner

Achieved all of the above in 6 years when he was a reserves player on the fringe of being desisted late in the previous season

I think a lot of these players are blokes who were traded for peanuts and just needed a change of scenery or a new role to really excel.

Stef Martin would be a classic example for us. Fringe, undersized hybrid ruck/forward who was massive for us for almost a decade; single-handedly holding down our ruck.

‘Steak knives’ Jack Crisp always had talent and showed some nice things at Brisbane but nothing to the extent to what he’s become at Collingwood with extra responsibility.

Ben Keays on the other hand probably doesn’t surprise a lot of Brisbane supporters. I think he was someone who was always going to improve pretty quickly. He just needed an opportunity which he wasn’t going to get in our midfield. I hope we don’t make the same mistake with Dev Robertson.

I'm not that surprised with Stef Martin

He had some good games for us when he was the no 1 ruck

Problem was the club always persisted with him as a key back or key forward though

David Mundy was a tall HBF with a good kick but I didn’t see enough in those early years to suggest he would become a record breaking 350+ game player, captain of the club, AA inside mid and club legend.
Racked up 30 touches last week coming off a Covid infection. He is still by far our best ball user by foot as he approaches his 40s.

Cameron Ling was drafted as a sort of cult-figure "fat full forward" who could use his girth and footy smarts to compensate for his lack of height.

Not sure anyone expected him to be a champion midfielder and premiership-winning captain....
I still remember his first game against Essendon and he kicked the ball out on the full from the goal square. I thought he was an absoloute spud

Obviously very early days, but I was shocked seeing Mitchell "Not that Mitchell or that Lewis" Lewis in person last week prove to be a very impressive key forward, and not just a meme draftee.

From my club, there was no indication that Jack Sinclair would be the only elite player on our list (thanks Champion Data). Pretty sure we only picked him up in the rookie draft after his mate Jack Billings bigged him up, now Sinclair has far surpassed his top three draft pick mate and is pushing for potential AA contention this year.

Tyler Brown, I'm surprised he's had a career

Kane Lambert

Was in the VFL for a few years didn't debut til he was 23 but has been one of our most important players over the years after looking pretty average his first couple years

An absolute stud now and can't wait to see him back
