I've had enough of all of these kents already.

Nothing would satisfy me more right now than drafting H.Reid and watch him kick a bag against the tin-rattlers.

And anyone else wanting to entertain splitting the pick in this massively compromised draft needs to give themselves an uppercut as well.

After the close loss to Essendon I became comfortable with the possibility of not getting Reid. Huge talent, but so are Curtin and McKercher. We'll get one of them. I increasingly felt dirty cheering on the spoon. "I don't mind losing as long as we're competitive" is a cop out.

If Norf beat GC next week and we end up with pick 1, so be it. But seeing the club Norf have been the last 5 years (and their mediocre VFL/AFL existence in general), I'm glad we're fighting to avoid the spoon.

We take McKercher?
Oh yeah, the Tassie guy. So we can develop him for the new Tassie team and get a few draft picks for him in 5 years time when he’s starting to come into his prime, and we can start again.

But then you’re the guy who reckons nobody ever goes back to Tassie. Hopefully that prediction proves more reliable than your prediction for the rest of the Eagles’ season.

Or, you could melt over an unproven, hyped up #1 pick, who may or may not live up to potential.

He's going to North, after all.

Agree - I just wanted us to avoid the spoon.

If we weren't able to then we get No.1 but we will still get one of the top bracket even with bids, PP, etc.

Yes it also pushes back the picks from other rounds but it still comes down to us picking successfully so in our hands.

And we know the players will be pushing to win for the retirees v Adelaide.

How a team finishes a season is often a sign for the next season.

Gary Ablett Jnr, arguably the greatest player in the history of the game, won a heap of games for Gold Coast eh?

Take the best available at our pick, that's all we can do.

The further away from the siren we get, the more I’m snapping back to reality.

You need top top top end stars to win flags, the Dustin Martins of the world.

Really hard to get guys like that on your list from Pick 3, especially if the team picking above you gets two cracks at it first.
It may have worked out for Richmond but don’t forget that if we hadn’t won some meaningless games at the back of 2009 we would have gotten a priority pick and probably would have ended up with Marabito and Martin.

Time will tell but I think we are going to look back on today as “what could have been” moment.

Same was said last year though and all through preseason our hopes were sky high then round 2 and 3 we actually looked solid before the shit hit the fan.

Based on how Gov and Yeo finished the game today I’m expecting no different next year. Very competitive when they’re on the park but will inevitably go down at some point in which we’ll be in a similar position this time next year. Still with a foot in both camps and not really committing to the rebuild properly, running CBA rotations with Gaff and Sheed (because they’re the only ones ever fit all year) and getting murdered.

Yeah - no coincidence we are so much better with fit McGovern, Yeo, Cripps.

No pick 1 and we'll blow pick 2. Oh well, that's modern West Coast for ya.

Delusions of mediocrity, can't even tank right.
Which player are blowing pick 2 on? Speak up.

I would have been ok if we had of lost out and got the number 1 pick, but it is just as important to learn how to win as it is to have the best list.

We need to be a top 4 team to win a flag and to do that you need to win close games, we have managed to go 2-2 in games under 2 goals. North are 2-5

Comparing port and Dogs, who you could argue have similar quality lists but Port will be top 4 because they have gone 6-2 whereas Dogs are 1-6.

Winning one game isn’t going to develop a winning culture. It’ll be hilarious when we win 2-3 games next year as well and the excuse for missing out on Reid is “winning culture because we won a game that took us to 17th”
You’re right. So much rather be North than us.

So we’ll get Pick 1 or 2 next year then and rebuild with more top 5 picks than we’ve had in a decade.

All the crying over missing Sheezel and Wardlaw last year, and now anyone not Pick 1 is a triple amputee who’s never played footy.

Next year’s draft is always better than this year’s and there’s always a once in a lifetime talent. We’ll be fine.

As much as I wanted WCE to end up with Reid, there are no guarantees his game translates the same to AFL as it does currently.

- he's strong but AFL players are stronger and bigger

- he gets decent separation but doesn't appear to have elite breakaway pace, like JHF

- question marks about being a 2-way runner

- What even is his best position? For all the comparisons to Dusty, he could end up being a De Goey clone instead. Handy player but hardly a generational talent

I still think he'll be a gun, no doubt. Plenty of players have had ridiculous hype pre draft and failed to live up to expectations however.

- That’s true, but he’ll be stronger than most once he has a few years in the AFL system

- His burst is underrated, he’s not lightning quick but he’s quick enough

- There aren’t many all time greats or best in the competition types that are two way runners, Dusty isn’t for example and that’s Reid’s best comparison

- It Is midfield with stints as the deepest forward, but you could put him at Half Back and he’d be capable of becoming an All Australian there as well, in my opinion Reid is actually the versatile player who has shown he can dominate in any area of the ground, it’s Curtin’s versatility that I think is being grossly overrated

Think I might be in the minority to prefer Curtin to McKercher? Regardless of state connections.

Sounds like there'll be plenty of classy mids at the pointy end next year. And Curtin just looks pure class in everything he does; defends well, breaks through tackles, clean when ball hits the deck, laser kick. All at KPP height. His WAFL form for an 18 year old is insanely good. It's such a good fit for the style of transition play we've been training, and showing glimpses of at our best.

And this is just looking at him as a defender, ignoring any potential he has to develop his inside game ala Dawson.

Don't get me wrong, either player would be a great fit for our list and give us something we clearly don't have. And I still would much rather Harley (gooooo Norf!).

But that’s what I don’t understand? You guys are saying we’re creating a winning culture and that this win meant something but then are saying we’ll get pick 1 or 2 next year, lol?

There won’t be a better prospect than Reid next year either and it’s an incredibly compromised draft, with the current top end talent also mainly being from Vic Metro.

Ño Point wringing your hands over it. What's done is done.

People are also underestimating how important a win against the odds, away from home, when you've copped heat from all angles is to a young team.

You can't just go from intentionally losing to suddenly flicking a switch and say "OK, let's win now."

It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see Clarko ultimately fail, the regime change at North and go through another down period before they properly contend again. Once losing becomes a priority, it infects all facets of a club an it needs a complete overhaul to change to a winning mindset.

You should never prioritise losing over winning.

Look at how long Carlton and Melbourne have taken to recover after intentionally losing for a number of years?
