rich v whoever at Glenelg

Eagles play whoever at Woodville (Eagles ground)

Port v whoever at Alberton

Crows v whoever at AAMI Stadium (no crowd) or Crows v whoever at Thebarton

Ess v whoever at Richmond (West Adel)

Melb v whoever at Norwood

dogs v whoever at centrals (bulldogs)

Then play a couple at adel oval and a couple at country grounds

For a sport that loves to take everything that the US do we seem to avoid their commentary style for some reason. If a game is shit, they won't pretend its not. They'll call it out for what it is. They know their viewers aren't stupid.

Back in the day Triple M would take the piss out of matches that were over. Don't know if they still do but it was perfectly fine for radio, no reason we can't do it on TV.

Games need to be shorter. There are usually only 2-3 games a week that are close. The rest are blow outs. Shorter games = closer games. As evidenced by 2020 when the average winning margin was 26.22. The closest average winning margin since the early 1960's. All other average winning margins in the last 40 years hover between 30-40 points.

Tanking should be openly allowed

If a team is willing to be s**t for several years and suffer poor crowds, loss of morale etc to get picks then that’s a trade off that shouldn’t be frowned upon
People bet on footy games, which would make tanking illegal.

Like putting a horse in a race intending to not try to win.

Shorter matches just means the games out of reach earlier, and at a smaller score.

St Kilda will miss the eight.
agreed.

got negative responses in the ladder prediction thread when I had them finishing with 9 wins.

They've got a tough run Home and many teams have faded after good starts that's all I was saying

Unpopular opinions
- Game sense hypothetical. lets say your team is up by under a goal with a minute to go and your team has the ball in a contest in your forward 50m. The player should kick the ball 60m directly in the air. This takes time off the clock and importantly not risking handing the ball back to the opposition by having a shot on goal. Also it has the added benefit that the opposition wont mark this ball because there will be too many players sotting underneath the ball. If a player did this in a game he would be labelled as a visionary of the game and having IQ off the charts. To me, its bloody obvious and it's staggering that teams/players don't do this regularly.

Kicking the ball 60m vertically =/= kicking the ball 60m horizontally.

Unpopular opinion:

Until the AFL play 34 games a season - one home, one away, we should not be looking at expanding the number of teams.

I hate seeing the lopsided fixtures that influence whether a team plays finals or not. One team gets to play gold coast twice a season, whilst the other has to play the premiers. The one that played GC twice gets in by % over the other. How is this fair? Then add to that the AFL "curate" the fixture and who you play twice, depending on how a team performed previously.. It is just so unprofessional. I would rather they use a random generator than this.

If we need to play twice a week for some weeks, then so be it. Let's force clubs to use their entire squad, it adds another element to the game. Squad management and depth play a huge part in winning the premiership then. It will prolong some veteran careers as well.

Second Unpopular opinion:

The AFL needs to stop having set teams for certain marquee events. Why should certain teams "own" the big days such as Anzac day, Good Friday etc. Open it up, allow other clubs in on the action.

The entire fixturing and scheduling already makes things very difficult for "smaller" clubs to get airtime and attention - which just creates an ongoing cycle. Any new fans, children etc. that are getting into the sport end up picking the bigger clubs, as that's who they watch on TV all the time. How can the smaller teams grow if they're being pushed down, and the bigger clubs getting all the big milestone games and TV slots?

I really do enjoy the rivalry for some of these marquee games such as Anzac day, but there really needs to be a push to get smaller teams in on the action. Otherwise the big teams are guaranteed to stay big, and the smaller teams remain small. Which is likely by design by the AFL.

I hate the deliberate out of bounds. A player kicks 50m up the line and it goes out A.if it’s thrown in both teams need to get numbers there otherwise it’s kicked immediately back to a packed 50.B. If the opposition player tracks the ball out of play whilst waving at the ump for a free shouldnt he be penalised? He’s deliberately let the ball go over the line and out of play!

I’ve often thought this would be a good idea when I watch defenders hack a kick in desperation out of defensive 50, only to have it almost invariably land in opposition mitts and return inside 50 with a simple spot-up footpass.

I would prefer my defenders booting it 40 metres straight up, and then crowding the foot of the ball. No mark would be paid either, even if the oppo took it cleanly, as it hasn’t traveled 25 metres laterally.

I’ll start looking forward to watching Gold Coast vs GWS in The Showdown next year then. Should sell Adelaide Oval out.

I have always thought that umpires need to assess whether the player would’ve kicked/hanballed/punched the footy in that direction even if the boundary line wasn’t there.

If the answer is “yes”, then it’s not deliberate.

If the answer is “no”, then it is deliberate.

I believe there should be a rule where if the ball travels X amount of distance forward, it can't be called deliberate. We shouldn't punish teams booting the ball in the direction of their goal and maybe it trickles over the line before players get to it. It should be more for sideways and backwards kicks.
