As much as it annoys us, because mostly we're irrational, the club is doing the right thing by playing him at Footscray until he's in form. He's not like other players that can be thrown into the AFL and have a bad game and just go back and work on their game - if he gets the call up before he's ready and plays poorly, it's back page news and compounds his issues.

He should play VFL until he knocks the door and down, and if he doesn't then he stays there.

Here's a little depression guide, given there seems to be a lot of misinformation around here. Hopefully it will allow us to be a bit more understanding of Tom collectively.

Depression, or clinical depression (these are the same thing- clinical doesn't mean it's worse) is a medical condition where people experience more negative emotions and/or don't enjoy things in daily life. It is related to having a neurotransmitter imbalance, where you have more of the neurotransmitters that cause negative emotions.

It is very common. Around 20% of people will experience it at some point in their lifetime. There would be people at your workplace who have had depression. There would be a handful of blokes at each club who have had depression. We don't hear about it in most cases because it is the player's private information, and it is none of our business.

It can have a variety of causes. Sometimes life events can contribute, and can be identified as causes. Other times it can just come out of the blue.

Treatments that have been proven to be effective include exercise, CBT (a type of taking therapy) and medications which aim to resolve the neurotransmitter imbalance. Most people would be using 2 or 3 of these methods to help improve their depression.

Most people with depression are still able to fulfill their roles at work. At times, some of them may need to take some time off, and some may perform a bit below their best for a period of time. Very few of them need to leave their work completely. Just because Tom has had time off and isn't in great form at the moment, that doesn't mean he is going to retire or should retire.

There's a lot that we don't know about Tom's depression. He is likely to be in a better headspace now than he was midway through last year, both based on bevo's reports and the fact that he's playing footy at the moment. The most important thing from our perspective is that we give him time. Jumping in and saying "it's time for (insert kneejerk decision here) to be made" is unhelpful. The club and Tom will make decisions in time about what's best for him and the club. Those decisions will be much more informed than any of us on here.

I agree with a lot of this. In a sense, he is like other players though. Nobody should be getting picked in the AFL team if they aren't performing at VFL level. That goes for Tom just as it does for anyone else.

given that players and media read Bigfooty this thread is peobably fairly detrimental to Tom's health.

Just leave the kid alone ffs. Hardly any big guys at his age are making a big splash
Players don't read BF lol, unless it's for a bit of a laugh or to take the piss, but even that would be rare.
We rant,we vent,we have agendas but league players are professionals who have access to professional coaches. Why would they read what some random thought on the internet?
In context, not even very many football fans read BF. Most people have better things to do,we just don't which is fair enough, people can do with their spare time what they want.

It would be interesting to know how much they do if at all - I think Murf said he did at one stage. Travis Cloke said social media had an impact on him, so not a great thing for players at times

The premiership hero hasn't played senior footy since round 13 last year after he took time away from the game to deal with mental health issues. A glute injury late in the pre-season hampered his preparation for round one and he's been struggling at VFL level since. Switching between the ruck and attack, the 22-year-old looks to be lacking confidence and timing when going for marks and hit-outs. However, after dropping an easy mark on the weekend against Sandringham, the penny might have dropped for former No.1 draft pick. From that moment onwards, Boyd attacked the contest with far more vigour and self-assurance, and his voice out on the field was more evident. Coach Luke Beveridge has long viewed the versatile big man as better suited to the ruck at this point in his career, but said recently that Boyd needed to "find his mojo as a forward and contribute in other areas (of the ground)." - Ryan Davidson

Apparently sung the song with the boys today? Any truth to that? Great if so!!
Yes he did and he has a wonderful voice, mind you everyone in the rooms sang the song as a sign of unity after news articles
had questioned the unity of the club. I don't think it was a closed session either with full media invited.

In one of the post-game interviews (Ed Richards?) he is in the rooms with the boys walking around, shows at least he's still all in with the club and one of the boys.
