What would a Dutton Liberal leadership mean for the Liberals and the country?

Of course he could, it's a question of whether he should. Labor are already struggling to control the narrative, if they win 2025 and go in with the same leader in 2028, I'd almost guarantee it'll be a big defeat. A new leader like Chalmers could invigorate the party and give them a shot at a third term.
If Albanese is still Labor leader and Dutton is still coalition or Liberal leader when the 2025 federal election comes around, I think Albanese will win the 2025 election again.

After that, let Anthony Albanese hang around for another 12 to 18 or possibly even 24 months.

If Chalmers is as good as you think he is, then hand him the leadership 12 to 18 months before the 2028 election.

he's very proficient at feeding the cookers, and he's very trump-like when it comes to costs or what's happening to so many existing nuclear plants worldwide

We won’t have the cost blow outs like overseas as we will go MMR and SMR technology which is a very different project to Gen 3.5 reactors

Think of how a car is built and delivered when thinking about MMR

No one, I repeat no one other than the Russians and China have started a new nuclear facility in the last 5 years. And Russia and China are hardly about to be engaged to build Australia's.

On top of that MMR and SMR do not exist commercially. They are a pipe dream. And they are small - Australia would need 50 or so to replace coal.

Nuclear is a ruse - it is all part of the "gas led recovery".

Dutton cannot win with nuclear as a policy.

yeah sure. in any event, 'thug' has avoided producing a costing. he has thought bubbles and then fibs or equivocates.

many of the existing nuclear plants are being closed in favour of the cheaper, less environmentally damaging, with none of the potentially catastrophic possibilities and going for green options.

Really?

We haven't even seen then initial costings let alone what reactor type is being planned

I might have more faith in the plan if they released in now so all of Australia can discuss it fully before the next election

The reactor type will be decided by groups like Snowy River Hydro who have already represented to government they can not meet their mandate by 2028.

A reactor type they may chose is the same as Chalk River in Canada.

Essentially small 10MW modules. Using 19.9% U 3D printed rods, enriched by technology already operating at ANSTO.

These reactors are very similar to the reactors going into AUKUS but the subs will run rich.

But important different locations and owners will choose different power systems. Engineers should decide not politicians.

Can we stop acting like nuclear reactors of any size are a possibility? It's a distraction.

Of course they are a possibility, in fact they are already a reality for Australia

After all, name one jurisdiction on the planet with a renewable strategy that delivers clean energy without hydro or nuclear

The only debate is time, location and technology

Cost?

How may years are Australian taxpayers meant ot pay it off?

Maybe the energy providers pay for it out of their own pockets and attempt to sell it to the consumers?

See if the Laws of supply and demand makes a financial case

The cost of a 10MW system, with a life of 40 years, including the first 20 years of fuel is USD$50M.

This is not a government funded infrastructure project but a scale BHP, Origin and others will operate. Or even Hyundai who are the mass manufacturer or Rolls Royce the defence operator.

Let’s wait for the first to be commissioned in Canada and revisit the debate.

every state premier has said they don’t want nuclear in their state, so it’s another likely cause of delay and serious protests + backlash. Dutton’s plan lacks credibility.

Politics is about the now now.

Just look at wa being anti nuclear but fought hard for all the nuclear power maintenance to be carried out in Henderson. Despite being anti nuclear……especially Freo which covers Henderson.

I’m happy for wa to be the national leader in nuclear technology which is essential for our economy

That’s not how government works, a plan written on the back of a piece of toilet paper isn’t a plan for the national energy grid.

We built our systems around baseload because we had to make up for the fact that coal plants couldn’t be turned off and therefore wouldn’t be economic. Dispatchable power is the future grid.

So much of the controlled load pushed to overnight can simply move to soak up excess solar in the middle of the day.

Boofhead also attacks the NCC but once a home hits about 7.5 ⭐️ it is decoupled from outside temp. Houses can then become thermal batteries. Heat/Cool a small demand in the middle of the day when the sun is out and the inhabitants can be comfortable for 24 hours further shifting demand. Use heat pump hot water etc.
