I dont want to sound like a prick, and dont get me wrong, some of the top 100 lists are amazing, but if you "cant possibly" narrow it down to a top 10 dont do one. Clearly we are all massive cinemaphiles but if you really cant think of your top 10 loved movies listing a top 100 just looks pretentious.

Pretty hard not to come off as pretentious when youre a true cinema buff (just like a music buff). It comes with the territory.

Pretty much. Cant think of many pre-WWII films I would watch on a regular basis. I don't think I've ever seen a silent film to be honest (apart from 'Metropolis' I think?). French new wave and 70s are definitely my preferred genres

I'd recommend pre-Goebbels German cinema

Hell, there are lots I'd recommend, have a shot at M (1931), honestly, it will blow you away.

easy, just delete all seppo film,

My favourite five aussie/kiwi films are :

Quiet Earth, The
Year My Voice Broke, The
Sunday Too Far Away
Long Weekend
Sky Pirates
... all of which I had rated 9.5/10

The next field, the 9s, had 16 films, looking more closely at it, I would say :
Frog Dreaming
Bad Taste
Ghosts... of the Civil Dead
Bad Blood
Road to Nhill
... are my favourite 5 of that 16

It's A Wonderful Life - Yeah, for the seventh, eighth or ninth time. Never fails to rivet. Amazing that it was not more excitedly received when it was released. Apparently the only reason it's a household name now is because someone forgot to renew copyright, it entered public domain, TV stations started throwing it our way, and of course only the truly psychopathic failed to fall in love with it.

Ah... what? I've never seen the film, but surely that's a big call.

It's a very big call, yet I am pretty confident about it :thumbsu:

As all teenagers are inherently psychopathic, they will enjoy exemption. But otherwise, I'd not want to be locked in a cell with someone who didn't love It's A Wonderful Life.

Hated HATED 'Its A Wonderful Life'.Never got the schmaltzy idealism of Capra's work, as talented as he obviously was.

I saw 'M' years ago but wouldnt mind tracking down a DVD copy actually.

Several years ago mum finally got me to watch it, after me saying 'but it's in black and white' (I was young, don't judge me too harshly). We now watch it every year in December. I love Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey.

As for the last movie I saw, I watched Match Point last night...wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it all the same.

So War Horse is pretty good. Quite long and melodramatic but I think most people will be able to get something out of it, if not quite as much as the 50+ year old women in my cinema. Has the standard John Williams score of a Spielberg film, some great action and quite briskly paced for a film over 2 hours long. The cinematography was interesting. Some very unusual lighting choices and the kind of stuff awards circles tend to take notice of. Could be the one to rob Emmanuel Lubezki's The Tree of Life work at the Oscars.

Taxi Driver - Step 2 in my 'must see' list. Found this to be quite sad. Woderfully shot as expected, wonderfully acted as expected, but the story of Travis is quite depressing and thought provoking. He comes across as quite a mental midget, awkward, unable to relate or converse with people and always looking to impress. Loved the soundtrack as well. Really good movie and enjoyed the ending.

Next.....Das Boot i reckon.

The Iron Lady
Disappointed to be honest. Streep was great as Thatcher, however the film was a bit of a let down. Hard to pinpoint exactly, but some of the dialogue felt very forced and the film tends to just wander from one event to another without any real driving force.
5/10

Soul Surfer - I really liked this movie, would watch it again and even though I don't really have a passion for surfing or connect with surfing at all, the storyline made me connect with the movie. Based on a true story, such a tragedy, but well presented. :thumbsu:

The Remains of the Day (1993): I don't think i've seen a performance where the lead actor (Anthony Hopkins) look so at ease potraying his character. In this role he is perfect as the persona driven butler. His expressions conveying the emotions he is unable to communicate are just brilliant.

The story progresses through flashbacks and the poignant moments are subtle yet moving at the same time. Emma Thompson (as the housekeeper) really performs well in these sort of roles and her character here depicted as more feisty and emotional than Hopkins provides an effective contrast with his character as the opposites attract.

The subplots are also reasonably interesting but it is the tension and the longing and the general back and forth between Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson's characters which made this movie immensely watchable. 8/10

The re-education of Macca continued with Das Boot. Now THAT is how you do a maritime war movie. 200 odd minutes of gripping tension & drama. The ending was a little bit of an anticlimax but fit the movie well. From 35 minutes or so in when they first spot the destroyer I was glued to the tv. Excellent movie. Puts every other sub movie (and most war movies) to shame.

Also watched Friends with Benefits. Very formulaic and followed just about every rom-com cliche you can think of. Though it did have Mila Kunis in underwear. Watchable, but very run of the mill with no stand out features. Though it did have Mila Kunis in underwear.

No Strings Attached - liked this better than Friends with Benefits though it was again just a formulaic rom-com by numbers with no outstanding quality. Except for Natalie Portman in underwear.

Now just to get Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in their underwear and a sex scene in the same movie. hmmm

For anyone feeling blue on New Years Eve, this is the perfect movie for you->

Great double for you there. Taxi Driver is brilliant and I was surprised by how engrossed I was with Das Boot. I usually watch movies in many sections at home but I watched Das Boot in one go. Crazy for me seeing as it's 4 hours long or whatever.
