A few that I have watched lately.

O'Brother, Where Art Thou

I'll start off by saying I'm a big Coen Brothers fan and how much it pains me to say this but was very disappointed. Hail Caesar par disappointed.

Look it's not a bad film but it just didn't really do anything for me. Story wasn't engaging, the dark humor wasn't there for a Coen movie and the characters I couldn't invest in. At the end I was like "Is that it?".

Die Hard

Watched this on Christmas Day for the first time, can't believe it's taken me this long to watch.

Not a masterpiece but just a ****ing awesome and fun action flick. Alan Rickman plays a fantastic antagonist and Bruce Willis is just a badass in it. Was abit slow in the middle there but the ending made up for it, edge of your seat stuff.

8/10

The Unforgiven

Haven't watched many Western movies in my life. Shanghai Noon and Django Unchained are probably the only ones now that I think about, so wasn't going in with high expectations despite what I reviews I had read beforehand.

Really really good film. Great story, great characters, great pacing. You see alot of films where people like cops, criminals, outlaws etc murder people and move on like nothing happened but here you see the affects of people's actions which I really liked.

Shoutout to Gene Hackman who was amazing in this, great performance.

The Unforgiven is a great film. It has been a while since I saw it but was filmed in an era where Westerns were considered tired.

I think you're right, the quality of the acting was fabulous and turned a good film into a great one.

Yeah never got into Brother either haven't tried for years though

Die Hard is a masterpiece. Also they took a fair bit of license from the book.

If you liked the unforgiven and Gene oh boy there is a whole back catalogue of great Clint Westerns and Gene movies.

Go watch them, he'll go watch every movie both guys made prior to 1990

Clint made a career out of Westerns but he's done other great movies, Gene can play hero or vilian with equal aplomb

Does anyone know if seeing a movie in IMAX is blurry or distorted if you don't wear 3D glasses?
If it's imax 3d, you need the glasses, if it's not then you don't need them. imax is just a big screen with a better projector

I went to buy the ticket online and the glasses were optional which made me think I don't need them, but just above the session times the legend says IMAX and 3D, whether as some of them just say IMAX (night sessions, not going to them) but those ones don't even give you the option of buying the glasses.

Yeah it's a shame there are a lot more IMAX/3D sessions than IMAX (don't require any viewing glasses).

I'm doing iMax 3D this afternoon. Gotta say I don't mind 3D at Imax.

Agreed 100%

The Man With the Iron Fists

Set in 19th century China, it's a revenge martial arts film. Best way to describe would be a B movie version of Kill Bill.

The direction is way off and RZA(who was also the director) is not a great lead to have but this is alot of fun to watch while you have a couple of hours to kill.

Russell Crowe is great in this, not a role you would expect him to do but I thought he was the MVP in the film.

Coco

Well, Pixar's last few movies have been more misses than hits, so I went into this movie more than a little worried. And...

... Make no mistake; this movie is a ****ing masterpiece.

Great voice acting, great setting, stunning visuals, incredible soundtrack.
The story was very clever, had a nice twist, and of course packs the usual Pixar gut-punches.

This FELT like a Pixar movie. I couldn't be happier with it, even though I cried like a girl.
Go see it.

Olaf's Frozen Adventure

Well, now that the Coco review is outta the way get ready for a solid melt.

Remember how before every Pixar movie they screen a typically fantastic 5-7 short movie? Usually gorgeously animated, heart-felt, experimental and captivating, it's one of the highlights of seeing these movies at the theater.

Now my screening began at 6:15. By 6:30 the trailers were done and dusted. Then we begin what I thought was a trailer for Frozen 2 or some shit.
Nope, it's a Frozen short story.
While pretty pissed off, I decided that at least it'll only be a few minutes.

... 25 minutes later the credits rolled on this abortion.

One of the most boring and cliched featurettes I've ever seen got shoehorned in before my movie. 40 minutes after my advertised start time I finally got to watch the movie I came to see.
Audible moans of "thank ****" throughout the audience when it finished indicated that Disney made a really shit decision including this.

If you'e going to see Coco, avoid this pointless shitheap.

Your Name - This was...beautiful. I don't know if the director Makoto Shinkai is considered the next Miyazaki but this definitely paints him as an incredible talent.

The Freaky Friday beginnigns were hella charming, but then it just elevated itself again and again with some just breathtaking moments. Absolutely gorgeous art, and a J-Rock soundtrack that I might even listen to on occasion.

I'm sure it might get accused for being overly sappy, but I had no qualms with it, the right amount of sap. Will be keeping a close eye on Shinkai's work, past and future from here on out.

The Bad Batch.

Pretentious oddity. Meritorious elements submerged in an open sewer of cinema verite/Jim Jarmusch homages. Watch at own peril.

Almost a sequel or sibling to the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Ben Stiller plays a guy having a mid-life crisis with a touch of Maladaptive Daydreaming. His mental commentary tells you that he feels his life is inadequate compared to his old college compatriots. A trip with his son to gain admission to Harvard leads him to reevaluate his life.

Maybe Stiller is playing himself in these roles but it works well. Michael Sheen only has one decent scene but absolutely kills it. The rasping solo violin soundtrack adds to the sense of unease.

Not for all but if you liked Secret Life of Walter Mitty you might like this.

8/10.
