M (1931)- Story of a German town mobilizing to catch a child murderer. Very interesting foreshadowing of the group mindset towards a single goal that led to the Nazi's only 10 years later.

Definitely some scary mob mentality scenes in there - considering probably half the people onscreen were either dead, dying or recovering from the trauna of war in short order.

Churchill (2017) 5/10

Fairly aimless telemovie-quality production pretending to be far more than it is.

I haven't paid any notice of any movie critics since David and Margaret disappeared off our screens. I come here to BF for most of my movie reviews and tv show recommendations as I've found several posters here to be very astute judges.
Same here. The internet has had a funny smell latelt

Wish Upon

Mike Stoklasa and Jay Bauman called this "so bad it's good" so I watched it. Can't say I found it as funny as they did. This may have been because they spoiled much of it in their brief review. It's a shitty PG-13 horror movie. Kevin Hanchard from The Expanse has a supporting role in it and Jerry O'Connell appears for about 90 seconds an hour into it (his role is uncredited...). Thankfully it all only goes 90 minutes. It feels like they filmed another 30-45 minutes so the studio probably realised it was awful and trimmed it to fit in extra showings.

Not sure if this has been done yet but...

Bright (2017) - Netflix only

Panned by critics but liked by the general public, and I definitely agree with the latter. Sure, it's not going to win awards any time soon but those calling it the worst of 2017 (coughemojimoviecough) need their heads checked - or were paid off by Rupert Murdoch, surely. Essentially Bad Boys 4 with monsters and magic and Will Smith definitely has stepped it up since his recent debacles.

Excellent world building at the start, had me hooked with the concept, delivered on it even if it resorts to the same buddy cop movie cliches. Joel Edgerton as Will Smith's orc partner provides an excellent contrast and despite the heavy-handedness at times the action scenes definitely put it among the better movies of 2017.

If you have Netflix, don't miss out.
I thought it was hands down one of the worst films I've seen this year. Loads of potential but severely poor dialogue and an annoying 2nd half really destroyed it for me.

Three Billboards

All over the shop.

A good plot along with a great cast, juxtaposed with a story direction that loses its' way towards the end. Great performances and some solid laughs made for an entertaining film that had a little bit of everything, but ultimately ended up with nothing. Highlights for me were in the performances of the always great Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell basically playing Sam Rockwell.

Some will love it, some will hate it. I pretty much sit somewhere in the middle.
Thought Billboards was fantastic. Really loved the ending too. Rockwell, Harrelson and McDormand were insanely good here.

The Shape of Water

It's fine but I thought I was getting a romantic melodrama and instead I got a romantic E.T., which is just okay.

Sally Hawkins is incredible, as are Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Shannon. The movie is gorgeously crafted and the make-up/CG used for the Fish Man is some of the most convincing I've seen since Ex Machina made me think they'd built an actual robot. But the film spends more time telling you it's super magical rather than actually convincing you on its own.

All the Money in the World

Makes a great companion piece with Tony Scott's Man on Fire in terms of highlighting the stylistic differences between the two Scott brothers.

I liked it but I'd rather have watched Man on Fire again. And if I wanted to watch a movie about how cultivating mass wealth disconnects you from your family and society, I could have just watched There Will Be Blood again.

Con Air

Just-paroled army ranger Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) is headed back to his wife (Monica Potter), but must fly home aboard a prison transport flight dubbed "Jailbird" with some of the worst criminals living. Along with Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames) and Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson), genius serial killer Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich) unleashes a violent escape plot in mid-flight.

From Google

Holy shit this movie is so much fun to watch. It's over the top but it doesn't take itself that seriously so it get's away with it. Heaps of action, some one liners, humor when needed and great performances from Malkovich, Cusack, Buscemi and Cage.

The first 15 minutes of setting up the plot felt rushed as **** and I thought "oh shit what am I getting myself into". The last action scene to me was fairly pointless and not needed. Cut the last action scene and further develop the set up to the plot and this would be held in very high regard as a great action film in my opinion.

8/10
Haven’t seen it for years but a lot of fun is what I remember

Miss Sloane- brilliant political film with some good twist and turns and good insight into the nature of Lobyists in the USA.

Must watch

10/10

Jessica Chastain was deserving of an Oscar for "Miss Sloane".

She's comfortably one of the best actors/actresses of her generation.

Miss Sloane was fantastic. Great performance from Jessica Chastain.

9/10

Chaplin - 7/10

Downey Jnr gives a great performance.

What I took out of the film is how similiar the political landscape of the world is almost 100 years later in some regards. When you look at Hoovers beliefs as depicted in the film (i assume that is accurate) and Chaplins thoughts on U.S immigration policy and Douglas Fairbanks observation on the country as a whole, to paraphrase he says underneath everything the country is scared, it seems not much has changed.

Wreck It Ralph isn't pixar and how can Wall-E not be in your top 5?

Lady Bird.

To be fair I only gave it half an hour before I gave up but it just wasn't engaging at all. Maybe in the remaining time it gains traction and gets good but all I saw was a really slow moving coming of age formulaic movie of a teen getting her first awkward boyfriend, doesn't get along with her mother, dad is struggling with work and a young woman thinking about college and big dreams. Don't understand the hype at all.

Of the movies I have seen in the Best Picture running, I can't see how it measures up anywhere near to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri or Get Out.
