Wind River. 9.5/10

I was in from the first 30 seconds. What a opening scene. I have never really got Jeremy Renner, but he gives a career best performance and im now a fan. Im already putting this down as one of my all time faves.
He's pretty decent in Arrival too IMO.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Strangely compelling indie flick starring Ryan Gosling as a socially awkward dude who orders a sex doll off the net, and has a delusion whereby he thinks she is his actual girlfriend, takes her around in a wheelchair and his family and friends are forced to accept her as such.

Sweet and understated like indie movies often can be, they do a fine job balancing comedy, drama and mental health themes. A great example of Gosling's acting ability, he gives a really impressive performance in this. 4/5

Battle of the Sexes

Emma Stone is great. The film is fairly ordinary but in the good, crowd-pleasing non-offensive kind of way. All surface level stuff but like Dayton & Faris' debut, Little Miss Sunshine, hard not to get swept up in it.

Flatliners

No idea who this is for. Did you like the first Flatliners? Then you'll hate this because it's far worse and incredibly shallow. Did you hate the first Flatliners? Then why the **** would want to watch this?

What if you have never seen the first one?

The Child in Time

Technically a made-for-TV movie (BBC One) though people are talking about flipping miniseries and TV shows in here :drunk:

Margaret from Boardwalk Empire and Doctor Strange from Doctor Strange are married with a young daughter. Then the kid disappears at the supermarket one day. The first half of this is pretty good. Jumps between shortly after the event and a year or two later. There's a good secondary plot about Benedict Cumberbatch's best friend moving to the country and becoming a weirdo which adds some tension that otherwise wouldn't have been there by the midway point of the story. Turns kind of shit in the second half though. Cumberbatch does something that at the very least should've had him dragged out of the building or the police tackling him but because this is made for the mouth breathing general public the scene is used to spell out what-it-all-means-for-him. Then something supernatural is added to the story and not in a satisfying way but in a Oh they just killed the realism way. The ending has an ostensibly feel good quality but it's stupid and rushed and made me say **** you to the TV. This was adapted from a book and I can see how the story would've been satisfying in that form (apparently the late Christopher Hitchens thought it was ****ing awesome which is very high praise) but it didn't work in this. Add another 30 minutes and don't dumb down the second half so much and it would've been good.

The Little Hours - not as funny as I'd hoped but it's a good cast & a bit out there so enjoyed it enough - 7/10.

A Ghost Story - not what I was expecting at all & came oh so close to turning it off after 30 minutes or so, thankfully though I stuck with it & was rewarded well enough. A big dollop of patience required going into this one - 7.5/10.

Battle of the Sexes.

Freaken loved it!!! Did not know much about the story at all so found it quite interesting. And funny- lots of jokes- best scene ever:

Steve Carrel going to Gamblers AA- only to lecture them all they are just shitty gamblers and need to get good :D Almost wet myself

7/10

Netflix binge to mark the end of the footy season:

*It Follows* Rewatch, love it. They don't make horror movies like they did back in 2014. 8/10

*The Interview* A divisive flick, but I found it plenty entertaining. Ridiculous storyline and typical yanks saving the day, but self aware and silly enough for me to forgive that. 7/10

*The Truman Show* All time classic 9/10
