The Black Phone

I liked it, but it's not a particularly great film. Agree with others here that the child actors were excellent, basically carrying the film.

Ethan Hawke's performance didn't grab me. Was I supposed to be scared of him, was I supposed to want to know more about his backstory, or his life outside this house? It felt unexplored, and the dynamic between him and Finney was also underdeveloped.

The setting, the cinematography, was all eerie enough, I liked that. The phone?

That was kinda a cool idea that
started out good but got a bit samey after a while. Basically phone rings, pick it up, get the next clue. Like the movie in general, it just went along a linear path to it's inevitable conclusion. Not every movie needs a big twist, but good thrillers have points of plot escalation, or at the very least a gradual increase in tension. This one kind of plodded along, and you knew he'd get out, I just thought it would be more interesting.
That phone! They could have done so much more with it, especially in terms of the communication with his sister.

But all up it was okay, and maybe appropriate to watch with older kids / young teens who don't get too scared. Def had a Stranger Things vibe.

Big Sunday

Bullet Train - different. It definitely wasn't the best movie I've seen but as I've read a few tweets saying, it was fun. And it's good that movies like this still get made, it's not a franchise, it's not a sequel or a prequel or any of that crap that we get these days. It was a good old fashioned movie centered around a star. I would suggest being in a good mood when going along to watch, I probably took a while to warm up into the movie. It was just fine, I dunno why you'd bother criticizing it, it's not supposed to be anything too special. I might watch it again one day but I'm not going out of my way for a while. 7/10 for me.

Thirteen Lives - Very good. I recently listened to a podcast series about the Thai Cave Rescue so I already knew a lot of the ins and outs and maybe that took away from a bit of the plot for me but it was still cool. I'm not sure what the spoiler rules are for real life movies but it really is crazy that everything went so well throughout the whole rescue. It's honestly a modern day miracle if we're being honest. Well acted and I loved the tension type vibe between the Thai guys and the English. A must watch movie this year. Good human story. 7/10.

So Predator is a classic.
I saw the god awful sequel with Dannt Glover
I saw AVP and cut my losses after that. Paul WS Anderson what a campaigner. The game rocked and they gave it to that campaigner.

Prey sounds Interesting.

Saw about half of lightyear while the kid watched it.

Was ok, they loved it so mission accomplished
Mission fail for me, kid lost interest compared to other animations. I also lost interest, bit repetitive and the planet was pretty dull. At least explore some more planets and get creative.

I know it's not a sequel to the toy story movies but they should have just stopped at Toy Story 3.

Predators (2010) was actually pretty good fwiw.

Disney will milk everything as hard as they can, always have

Just doesn't interest me. Same with Prometheus.

The fact Prey has me interested at all is unusual.

Amber was on Legion though so that helps. Loved that show.

Fair. Adrian Brody, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins and Mahershala Ali got me interested and it actually delivered pretty well but I understand the caution, the franchise has had far more misses than hits.

Prey has a strong female lead, there's no surprise you're more interested in that.

That’s hardly a bad thing.
Of course it isn't.

But the poster in question does have history of... Veering toward SJW behaviour.

It isn't surprising it takes a female led film to rekindle his interest in the franchise.

I'm just helping to get to the bottom of the mystery as to why he's interested in Prey more than previous Predator flicks.

It’s also the movie that made me think Topher Grace might be able to act.

I haven’t thought that again since, but I remember watching it (maybe 10 years ago) and being impressed with his role.

More novel than another movie starring "a white guy called Chris".

(Quote from an industry person whose name I forget. He was on a podcast extolling the virtues of Michael Keaton.)

I mean like
Alien
The Terminator

plus this is a period piece so low tech vs the Predator which goes back to Arnie in the original as well

I actually just got around to watching that on Sunday night. Thought it was OK but nothing special. Worth watching once, probably won't ever bother watching it again. Didn't think it made the most of a good ensemble cast.

Really didn't like the ending, though. I don't know if they were planning / hoping to make a sequel that never happened or what, but it felt really inconclusive.

Yeh, fair criticisms I’d say, I enjoyed it and would say it easily the second best in the predator universe.
