Wasnt able to see it in the end but its still on at Nova in Carlton so might try again this weekend. Yeah heard the same so have avoided even the trailer.

Looks like Substance is out on general release this weekend, definitely worth checking out. Was laughing out loud most of the third act.

Definitely keen for The Substance, it's getting some major hype. Big fan of Margaret Qualley ever since Sanctuary, and the director's last movie Revenge was pretty solid too.

Ahhhh...

Its real weird. The second act lost me entirely, third got me back a bit.

It looks cheap and the characters and acting are really wooden and one dimensional, but thats clearly deliberate.

I dont think i liked it... but im also not sure of that.

Waterworld (1995). The 3 hour "Ulysses" edit.

It's basically Mad Max 2 on the ocean. Costner is good as the grumpy mariner. He seems to do a lot of physical stuff which is a throwback to the old acting days. Dennis Hopper is a good as the OTT villain. Jeanne Tripplehorn's performance was a bit patchy. The Indiana Jones style score sucked. There's some good action and stunts mixed with some very silly stuff. Anything with the balloon looks ridiculous.

But overall it's lots of fun.

Somehow enough time has passed in the film for Costner to develop gills on his neck.

Weird shit I remember: When the film came out Letterman did a top ten things to happen if Waterworld was true.

Number 1: Hootie and the Blowfish would have to call themselves The Blowfish and Hootie.

I actually dont hate Waterworld and i havent really ever understood why it cops so much shit, im not saying its a masterpiece and clearly it didnt justify its budget but its a pretty fun if a little campy action adventure film BUT...

I think the original was like 2 hours maybe 2.15 and it was too long. 3 hours would be a real slog, i cant even imagine what bits are beefed up plot wise and i doubt they pulled any action scenes.

The Ulysses cut of Waterworld is a fan edit that goes for 2.50 not including credits. For me it didn't drag, which might have just been my taste. But sometimes adding scenes back in can improve the flow, provide context or even restore scenes that were cut for violence and bad language. This article explains the scenes that were added to the theatrical version.

Kingdom of Heaven was much improved by Ridley going back and adding 45 minutes.

If you like the Kill Bill movies see if you can get your hands on a fan edit called Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. It's not just the two movies tacked together but it's a reedit with some scenes added and one important scene at the end KB1 removed, which changes how you view events in KB2.

Alien Romulus - 8/10

Thought it was pretty good entry into the Alien universe. Obvious call back to the first two movies in tone (more simple than the recent ones), but I like that it had some connection to Prometheus and Covenant mythos (both of which I liked more than the general population I think). Hopefully further movies can develop that more as I think there is a lot unexplored there.

Wasn't a huge fan of the way the Rook character was done (trying not to give any spoilers).

I really liked the young/kinda unknown cast. The actor playing Andy killed it.

Love the shots, the score, Tooth Fairy was creepy as hell. Ending kinda sucked but overall so good

Dawn of the Dead 2004 - Zac Snyder

An ok entry into the zombie genre - fairly standard tropes

Zombie Neighbour then into mall hiding place , arseh*le people , going into midnight run to escape

At 100 mins its a good length and doesnt strain the brain cells overly

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - saying it’s Tim Burton’s best film in at least a decade might be damning it with feint praise, but it is what it is. Felt like Burton was actually having a bit of fun with this one, as well as most of the cast. You also can’t say it’s uninspired - the flaw would be the opposite, as there are way too many subplots that they all end up kinda underwhelming. Nothing revolutionary, but it was enjoyable enough.

Enter the Dragon (1973) - not an enormous amount to say but fun to see this in a cinema. Bruce Lee was such a great presence. Very enjoyable.

I adore the 1978 DOTD original and was ready to hate the remake but was surprised as to how effective it was.

Train To Busan I watched with my daughter and we were both crying by the end.
