Just watched Kick-Ass, and really enjoyed it. I didn't have high hopes for it but it pleasantly surprised me.

Standout performance for me was Nicholas Cage. When he was the batman-type character I swear he was channelling a little bit of Adam West.

A lot of people seem to dislike Cage, but he's one of my favourite actors, especially when he's given the right role.

Saw two movies yesterday at the MIFF:

I Wish I Knew - Chinese documentary about the modern history of Shanghai, focusing on the stories of individuals. Revolved a lot around the revolutionary period and had a whiff of propaganda about it. Cinematography and scoring was beautiful though.

Senna - Documentary about the life of Ayrton Senna. As someone who knew little about his career I found it very interesting, but it didn't strike me as especially insightful. Pieced together from news, interview, race and home video footage with a few voiceovers by family and friends. I imagine that someone who was already a Senna fan and followed F1 in the 80s and early 90s would have been a bit disappointed.

Thought it gave Alain Prost a bit of a rough ride as well.

I think the last movie I watched was the other day and it was 'Magnum Force'. Good movie. I've been trying to watch all of the Dirty Harry movies recently. They're all great.

yeah really enjoyed The man from earth

the first half an hour was a real slow burner that i liked

The Deer Hunter
After hearing so much about this movie I finally got around to seeing it. A very tense experience. The infamous Russian Roulette scenes are well done and De Niro and Walken's performances are incredibly convincing, as was Meryl Streep. The people who complain that the movie wasn't very historically accurate (no real evidence of the Vietcong forcing prisoners to play RR) miss the point that the movie is trying to make about the horror of war. It's a nice plot device to get this point across, and it is a movie after all.

Up
Big fan of Disney/Pixar and this didn't disappoint either. I'd seen that Up has had a somewhat divided reception, with people either loving it or hating it. I thought it was a very touching story nicely told with some great characters. Not my favourite Disney/Pixar offering but definitely worth a watch.

I found Up, like Wall-E, to be a bit patchy. Brilliant in some parts and very flat and kind of crap in others. Still a great movie though.

I guess that what happens when you're making a kids movie. It's hard to appeal to all demographics perfectly at the same time, all the time. Credit to them for keeping the standard so high for so long though.

Which was the movie she was sacked from just before she died? Then doris day went on to make it? For some reason i thought it was "some like it hot" - clearly not.

I work at the movies, so I end up seeing most films.

Anyone see Tree of Life? I actually enjoyed it. I was confused at the beginning and end. I came out not really having formed an opinion but I thought it was quite good after a few days. Sean Penn's role felt unnecessary though.

Watched the Switch with Aniston and Bateman. Was standard run of the mill Rom-com. I like both actors so I was hoping for better. Can see why it went straight to DVD though.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows - Was enjoyable. Nothing to ride home about. Daniel Radcliffe is the worst actor in the world. He ruins the films for me.

Mr Poppers Penguins - Decent enough but I wouldn't really fork out money for it.

Cars 2 - Really enjoyed it, more than the first. I still will never understand how the Cars built any infrastructure though!

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Highly worth it. Much improved on the first. The father Goose is a laugh.

Watched Casablanca last night for the first time - and enjoyed it immensely.

The sharp dialogue and humour that runs throughout the picture seems ahead of its time, although I haven't seen too many movies from that era to compare it with.
Humphrey Bogart's performance was great - his deadpan delivery of some lines is superb. Ingrid Bergman is a babe too.

There's simply no better film than Casablanca.

Very much a guy movie though, I think - almost every girlfriend I've had has hated it due to the ending.

Agree with this 100%

the fact that the film was made so long ago, propels it even further
