With the Bulldogs and Hawthorn coming like a freight train home and rampaging up the ladder, it looks like again two teams who were out of the 8 until deep into the season may go deep into finals. It's round 20 and the Dogs have only JUST got into the 8, while Hawthorn lie waiting at 9. If their forms continue they both should be a lock for the 8. Last year Carlton and GWS were out of finals late and both werent far from making the GF, both leading for large parts of their respective PFs. A Carlton GWS GF wasnt that far off. Makes me wonder, when the latest a premier has been out of the 8? I can barely remember a premier who wasn't in the 8 for the majority of the year, from like round 3 or 4.

Since the top 8 finals system was introduced in 1994:

Richmond (2019) = 9th (Round 14)

Adelaide (1998) = 10th (Round 12)

Sydney (2005) = 9th (Round 10)

Brisbane Lions (2001) = 9th (Round 9)

Richmond (2020) = 9th (Round 8)

Adelaide (1997) = 13th (Round 6)

North Melbourne (1999) = 12th (Round 5)
Geelong (2007) = 10th (Round 5)

Hawthorn (2013) = 9th (Round 2)

West Coast (2018) = 14th (Round 1)
West Coast (1994) = 9th (Round 1)

Thanks for the info, must've taken awhile to find it. So if the Dogs win it this year it'll break the record by some margin.
