Bring him back mid season. We’d never lose a centre clearance again.

He wouldn't be able to hit his weight target.

Browny once said the best thing about retirement was eating less and not having to keep weight on. Matho is clearly the opposite.

Maybe his lack of tank was not enough fuel.

Three X Lions boys have been named in the Qld state squad to take on Tasmania ie. Rhys Mathieson, Liam Dawson and Matt Hammelmann.

The State Game between Queensland and Tasmania will take place at Bond University on Saturday June 22.

Hammelman has won the goalkicking in every comp he has played in for the last 6-7 years.

Top of the ladder, bottom of the ladder teams in that period - no matter where he is, he just kicks bags.

Bit of a mystery how he never made it at the top level
Some on big footy over the years have suggested he just wasn't motivated/dedicated enough re the demands of professional footy and the training loads required... happy to play at the lower levels and have more of a life outside of footy.

Which is fine, each to their own.

Definitely isn’t

Clearly isn’t interested otherwise he’d play in a decent comp instead of playing park footy with his mates

He was on an AFL list, then he played in the NEAFL with Redland, where he won the goalkicking several times.

This is not 'park footy' it was a state league comp, playing the Lions & Suns Reserves, Swans and Giants Reserves, Southport and so on. Very strong competition.

When that disbanded, he played VFL for Aspley and won the goalkicking again, in a team placed last on the ladder.

When Aspley dropped out of the VFL, he returned to the QAFL with Redland - and while this comp is not as strong as the old NEAFL, it is much stronger than the 2014-2020 version of the QAFL, as the removal of the NEAFL has seen much of that talent come into the QAFL that traditionally played NEAFL for local clubs.

It might be one of the weaker state leagues, but it is far removed from 'park footy'

Perfectly reasonable to assume that even when he was playing VFL (or AFL) he was giving red flags that commitment was an issue

Usually if all the best footy minds multiple times don’t think someone is up to it then they are clearly not up to the level required

Absolutely, but its still somewhat of a mystery how he either didn't get another opportunity, didn't adjust his commitment levels etc.

Matthew Payne another good example, and its an even bigger mystery!

I believe, and don't quote me on it, he still held hopes of playing AFL until about 2021. COVID got in the way a bit, as he had signed to play VFL with Essendon in 2021, but decided not to risk being in Vic (great decision!)

He was leading goalkicker in the abridged 2020 QAFL Season, a competition that had Coleman, Ryan, Michael, Martyn and Cumberland drafted from it from memory.

I saw somewhere on here that he knocked back clubs last year and this year (MSD), so I guess that would somewhat align. There's usually a couple of years lag between someone getting delisted and getting a second chance, because clubs tend to assume players don't really develop in the lower leagues - instead they're just too good for that league but not good enough for the AFL. In Matt's case, that gap ended up being the COVID years when fewer players were getting chances generally too.

perhaps has a good professional career going of some kind, I know thats the case with a couple of other good players in the QAFL and VFL, where a rookie contract would result in a 50% paycut from their current wage, so they have moved on

Paul Amy

A couple of VFL clubs had a dip at recruiting retiring Brisbane Lion and 2023 JJ Liston Trophy winner Jarryd Lyons. But they missed out - and are tipping he'll join Glenelg.
