Recent weeks we've seen Dyson Heppell grit his teeth and drag his team forward at crucial stages of the game.

You've got:

Tier AAA - Ablett
Tier AA - Pendlebury, Dangerfield
Tier A - Watson, Beams, Murphy, Cotchin, Selwood, Priddis
A Graders - etc.

Moving forward, where does Dyson Heppell rate? How high is he now?

I have him currently Tier A but pushing Tier AA by the start of next season.

You've got Ablett, Pendles, Dangerfield, then Heppell, and Watson/Selwood/Beams/Cotchin/Priddis etc after.

Essendon board, but I'll bite.

I'd have him currently at B-grade level. His decision making is atrocious at times, his skills aren't anywhere near A-grade level, how often do you see him pinpoint a 50m pass? He rarely kicks goals and I've noticed that he butchers very gettable shots at goal. His main asset is his gut running and his ability to read the play, however he's a long way from A-Grade imo. I'd take Zaharakis before him any day of the week.

Wat

Would you take zaka just because he's better on pure talent or because you think he's genuinely been playing better than heppell?

Your tiers are out of whack.

Ablett has one by himself followed by Pendlebury, Danger and Selwood.

Murphy, Watson and Cotchin are all ahead of Beams, Heppell and Priddis.

Heppell is in no way shape or form a top 5 mid in this league.

Having him ahead of Watson, Cotchin and Selwood is nonsensical, he's on par with Beams imo.

Heppell is a B+.

You could make a very strong argument that Lewis is ahead of Heppell this year. Lewis has been amazing.

Right now Heppell has a had a career that ranks below Woewodin. Lets have this conversation in 5-10 years hey.

Lewis has been phenomenal this year and has been for a few years now, I was being a dickhead like that bloke I quoted.

a very good player but more an accumulator than an out and out star. doesnt hurt as much with his posessions/use of the ball. gets a fair amount of meaningless possessions like trent cotchin.

His one great attribute is leadership, seems to stand up when it matters and others seem to follow him. At this stage of his career is an A grader with potential to go another level or 2 if improves the way he uses the footy (not so many dinky little 20m kicks ala cotchin)

Tier AAAAA - Ablett
Tier AAAA - Pendlebury, Selwood, Watson, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Johnson, Kennedy
Tier AAA - Beams, Rockliff, Gibbs, Sloane, Cotchin, Griffen, Boak, Mitchell, Jack, Lewis, Barlow, Harvey, Ward
Tier AA - Heppell, Murphy, Deledio, Liberatore, Swan, Martin, Hannebery, Jones, Priddis, Mundy, Montagna, Parker, Swallow, Hodge, Steven
Tier A - Stanton, Wines, Tyson, Smith, Judd, Prestia, Hartlett, Ellis, Shuey, Ziebell, Cunnington, Hill

I would think of him as B Grader right now, but a rising A grader. This is the first year he's been dominant across an entire season. For me, you need a few solid seasons before you become an A grader, so he's on his way but not there yet. If he does this again next season, then I think you can look to justify A grader status.

When you look at the other guys you are comparing him too, like Selwood, Watson, Dangerfield etc, they have backed up season after season.

I rate him really high however if by "peers" you mean the rest of the AFL midfielders then he still has a way to go. I'm not sure he even gets the hardest tag and main focus from opposition yet, though that's probably not far away if he continues. If by "peers" you mean others from the same draft year, he is top of the list, ahead of the likes of Gaff, Swallow and Caddy for sure. The others seem to be growing too however. I noticed Caddy had a standout game for Geelong this week, much better then Selwood, but has a long way to go to get to Heppells efforts week in and out though.
Gaff has been tagged since his second season due to Eagles lack of midfield depth but that's gradually changing. I'm still doubtful he'll get to Heppells level.
Dyson just needs to continue moving forward. He still has a bit to learn. If he does he has the natural tools to be up there with the elites.

1) Ablett
2) Pendlebury, Selwood, Fyfe, Franklin
3) Dangerfield, Rockliff, Murphy, Watson, Johnson, Beams
4) Cotchin, Heppell (at this point in his career)
...
20) Priddis :p

Forgetting a heap of players but you get the gist.

For a lightly framed kid in his 4th year he's done pretty well playing through tags. Also his influence on those games is noticeable when you look at the outcome for Essendon when Doison is being beaten or not by his tagger. The doggies game is the best example. Wallis had him covered for 3 quarters and doggies dominated through the middle of the ground. Wallis went off injured for the last quarter and Doison cut it up and the bombers snuck a fairly undeserving victory.

He can turn the ball over on occasion but only because he gets the ball in the fry pan regularly. In space his kicking is extremely reliable, which is why he was allowed to have a looshish half back role in his first season. His hands around the contest are fantastic as well. His gut running and champion qualities of willing himself onto the contest will more than compensate for his deficiencies which is a lack of power, i.e. he's not super quick or strong and doesn't have a noticeably penetrating kick.

Will be the next captain of Essendon. I look forward to his regular press conferences.

He is not in the same bracket as the best of the best right now though. However, neither were any of them at this stage of their careers.

My tips for the best in the comp in 5 years time are:

1. Bontempelli
2. Fyfe
3. Doison
