Sod playing careers, I think Royal is a smart bloke. Much more important :)

Simple - the Saints have better kids and a better list overall than Geelong or Melbourne. I would rather have players like Riewoldt and Kozzie than any other player from Geelong or Melbourne's list on my side.
Besides i think they will be the big improvers in 2002 (St.Kilda)

What a load of crap!

When he's injury free we have the best tap(thump) ruckman in the league and he wants to play for us unlike your ruckman. :p
We have a brownlow medal winner who can't have a worse year than he did last year and he's nearly 10 years younger than your #1 midfielder/brownlow winner who will be missing most of next year anyway. We have 2 tall, strong marking forwards(Nietz, Schwarz) and the setup around them (Robertson, Green, Vardy, Bruce, Bizzell) who on their day could beat anyone. You just lost your #1 marking forward to Sydney and you wouldnt wanna rely on Hamill to be your #1 forward.
Our midfield hasnt changed since the end of 2000 when they were called the best midfield in the comp. Not many teams have a better midfield, injury-free and when inform - Woewodin, Leoncelli, Powell, Rigoni, Yze, Johnstone, Walsh, Ward, Whelan..etc etc Our backline was said to be our only weakness and with the improvement of Nicholson, the recruitment of Ellis, the development of Broadbridge, Wheatley(gonna be stars;) ) and Breese and the possibility of throwing in Nietz or Bizzell we have to be at least contendors for the 8. Stkilda don't even come close.

West coast are one of the teams which will NEVER finish last, they have too much pride (and a few handy players)

Look at at last year - the worst team but finished third last.

Pess...your a champ :) We probably did have the worst team and still avoided bottom, were too proud for last.

I tend to agree with Pessimistic. There are a few teams that I feel will never finish last again:

-Carlton
-Essendon
-Hawthorn
-West Coast

These clubs are too proud. But, the more I look at West Coast's playing list I wonder just who is going to take bottom spot off them!

where are the Roos on your poll, there a good chance.

Let's be honest with ourselves Jod, that statement is ridiculous! We maybe still rebuilding but the quality on our list is still a 1000 times better than your mob.

I don't think your mob will be eating off the wooden spoon this year either, but... if Cousins and Gardiner get serious injuries, well then...that's another story.;)

Mind you it was only a dismal fitzroy 1995 (hawks 7 wins) and a dismal Melbourne 1997 (hawks 8 wins) which helped avoid more wooden spoons for hawthorn. So it was quite close.

I think Adelaide will also never come last.

Wooden Spoon

I actually picked Geelong because I am so disallousioned by the way they are heading. They seem to have lacked all direction after being in the finals in 2000.

Their midfield is in a word at the moment - HOPELESS, and unless they get a leader like Misiti, it will remain that way. The kids they have got don't have the necessary skills to be competitive and are too light to compete physically, both will take time.

They have little to no leadership - When a player who has been at the club 12 months - Mitchell White - is being talked about as a possible 2002 vice captain you know there is trouble. Discipline is a problem as they appear to have too many psychotics in the team, (Mooney, Burns, Chapman, Milburn)

They do have the best young ruckman in the league in King and one of the best young backmen in Scarlett but apart from that nothing else of note. Burns only plays when he wants to, Riccardi is well past his best, Sanderson, McGrath and Sholl are solid, but not spectacular defenders, while the forward line is a mess.

Mark Thompson wants them to play accountable and physical football, if Geelong play accountable football they will not be successful. When Geelong have been successful in the past it has been when they are playing a free wheeling type of game. There is no doubt that Peter Schwab's decision to let Hawthorn free has contributed to their success, although they play a chipping style game, they are certainly a more free flowing team than they were under Judge.

It's quite clear that Geelong is concerned about getting its finances into gear, and not so much concerned with winning games. But they have to be careful to remember that the only way they can get members and sponsors is by winning games.

For Geelong to be successful they need someone who they trust at full forward and most importanlty, they need to leave the player there full time. That way the midfielders will know who they are aiming for and the rovers could pick it up at their feet should it hit the ground. It could be Graham, Ling, C. Mooney or a new recruit, but they must leave him in the one spot all year. I don't think that will happen and that's why I don't think they'll win enough games to get off the bottom.

Again?? WC has never finished last and i am confident we can avoid it again next year until we really start becoming a good team again around 2003.

I'm pretty sure Carlton have never finished last either.

Everyone is writing off WCE, although I would LOVE to see it happen, I doubt it will. Surely they couldn't have another bad run of injuries?

Geelong are far and away favourites. Although my sentimental favourite is Port Adelaide ;) not that it'll happen :(

I should point out that Port have never finished last either, in SANFL or AFL, even though we were red-hot favourites midway through last year.

Its amusing that people are tipping the Cats to finish last next year. Sure we've lost Bizzell and Murphy, however for anyone that has watched Geelong over the last few years, and not just the highlights packages, they will realise that these two are not the be all and end all of our side.
In fact, these two only go well if others around them are on song. I might be wrong, but I think you will find that the Cats will suprise a few teams next year, yet still capitulate to a few others, just as they have been doing since 1998.

To make this poll fair you should have listed all 16 clubs. I reckon it is a toss up between the Saints & Geelong. The Saints have a better squad, but a worse coach. Freo should improve (but won't make the eight). Weagles would be my pick for 14th. Melbourne should make the eight, based on past trends (& improved in the later part of last season).

Let's see
Name more than 2 players in Geelong's 22 that would get a game with Carlton or Essendon .
Burns and King that's it

I'm sorry but it's going to be a looooooonnnnnggggg season down at the cattery
And Catman
Who cares ?

So?

Does that mean we will finish last because apparently 2 of our players would get a game with Carlton or Essendon?

What a damn good reason.

Also, why mention Carlton? They are not one of the top 2 sides in the comp.

But they are the greatest side ever!
