The whole Geelong - Hawthorn thing is a bit silly. It has been 3 in a row now, and the two losses in 2006 were just pathetic, back when we gave our opponents little respect and paid for it. But go back to the 3 games before that and we gave them 3 10 goal hidings.

Look at the close results since say... 1989.
We have won every one.

Those 3 x 10 goal hidings did come at a time when we were getting beaten by everyone in the league.

Most hawks supporters have an extra degree of confidence going up against the cats, no matter where or when. Our record at Skilled/Kardinia over the last 20 years is amazing, when you consider the quality of the cats over the same period..

My rabid cats supporting workmate was over the moon when the Hawks stumbled out of the top 4 at the end of the year.

Essendon. They very nearly did it in '06 when we were good and they were deplorable, and this year they beat us once and killed our home finals chances, both times coming from nowhere. Never beaten them in a final either, including one of the screwings-over where we earnt a home final which we played in Melbourne.

Not sure if it counts on this board but Essendon havent beaten the Hawks since the 'line in the sand' game a few years ago.

not all of the games count as we haven't been the better team.

Carlton and North own Essendon

Really not what it's made out to be. We lost to them in 06 yes. We lost to a lot of teams badly that year. Then lost by under a kick to them in Tassy with the wind blowing shots heading through the middle out on the full. Lost to the Hawks by less then we did to the Dogs and Roos and they certainly got whacked in the return bouts.

You are right to some extent. Prior to 2006 Geelong had the upper hand for a few years. However, looking back over the past 10-20 years, rather than isolating a few here and there, we have always found ways of beating Geelong and breaking their hearts when it counted. How often through the mid-late '90s did we take you down on your own patch with mediocre sides?

They won the next one by a few points after Jon Hay rushed a behind off his boot and the goal umpire paid it a goal to Dean Soloman (I think). Haven't beaten us since then though. Having said that, we have probably been the better side since then too. Definitely were in 2007.

Hawthorn have got an astonishing one-sided winning record in close games (say less than 2 goals) all the way back since the Rd 22 win over the Cats at K.P in RD 22 1987. I'll post them as follows, with an singular Geelong win over the Hawks in 2001 with Ronnie Burns the star, as the only exception.

Rd 22 1987 Haw 19.12 126 d Geel 17.21.123 (K.P)

Pre season cup 1988 Haw won by 3 points, unsure of scores.

1989 Rd 6 Haw 26.15.171 d Geel 25.13.163 (Optus)

1989 G.F Haw 21.18.144 d Geel 21.12.138 (M.C.G)

1991 2nd Semi Haw 13.17.95 d Geel 13.15.93 (VFL Park)

1995 Rd 6 Haw 11.12.78 d Geel 9.19.73 (K.P)

1996 Rd 15 Haw 11.8.74 d Geel 10.12.72 (K.P)

1997 Rd 12 Haw 13.10.88 d Geel 12.10.82 (K.P)

1999 Rd 6 Haw 14.16.100 d Geel 14.14.98 (K.P) Also 1st loss for season:mad:

2000 Elim Fin Haw 14.8.92 d Geel 12.11.83 (T.D)

2001 Rd 11 Geel 14.9.93 d Haw 13.12.90 (T.D) Yeayyy!!

2007 Rd 4 Haw 10.16.76 d Geel 9.18.72 (Aurora)

That is an amazing litany of close defeats by the Hawks over Geelong, 11-1 by less than 2 goals in that time. Doubt any club ever could lay claim to such an owning by close margins, it's like we were cursed. Hope this changes in the years to come, it's only been once in the last 7 years at least.

is all driven by our dawk friends, teams that "owned" us for a bit is definately roos and dogs if you checked the records..

I noticed this in the Souvenir Book regarding overall stats for Geelong vs Hawthorn:

Played 139
Won 72
Lost 66
Drawn 1

But true that Hawthorn has the wood over Geelong in recent years. Those close games are a killer Catsace - 1 kick in it!

Late 80s to mid 90s Geelong certainly had more trouble beating Hawthorn than it should have. Can't deny that. I think the recent record was about 13-2 at one stage. Just not the case now like it is made out sometimes.

Geelong also had a very solid record over the Kangaroos throughout the '90's in an era when they were generally very strong, Geelong would have won at least 60% of those games in that era when the Roos were generally thrashing most teams.

Dogs also had a period in the late 90's and early 00's where they came back from about 40 points at least three times against Geelong at K.P also, winning at a venue they have historically struggled at.

Hawthorn had another 2 point win over Geelong in 1999. Was a night game round 21 by memory. Shane Crawford played a blinder in that game.

We are Ports beotch and have been for a while.
Also we cant seem to beat essendon when we play in the eastern states, no matter where we are on the ladder.

Brisbane, oh how they have owned us :(

IIRC we have been pretty good against North for about the last decade. Remember a game when Buckley kicked 6 and Carey 5 but we always seem to do well against them.

Carlton have owned Melbourne.

In 2004 and 2006 (our good years) the Blues always beat us and cost us top 4 spots. A clear lack of respect shown from the Dees.

Doof!!!!! Yes indeed, yet another one on the pile....That's 12 of 13 close games favouring the one side. Absolutely miraculous statistical fact there, as a close game by one kick is really a toss of the coin scenario. Makes me wonder how Hawthorn cannot get within a bulls roar of the Swans, or other teams Geelong CAN beat!

I can only hang my hat on the fact though, that Geelong started inflicting 100 point whippings on teams who beat us first time around. We didn;t get a 2nd crack at the Hawks in 07, maybe next year:D:)

As has been said, for us Port and Essendon mean trouble.

Has to be said both those clubs have put up more good sides than bad over the years of their respective battles with West Coast, but even when we have been favoured we have lost, or at least struggled (ie Rd 22 this year).

Will be interesting to see what effect Sheedy leaving has on Essendon's pwnage of the Eagles. He seems to be 'on' for Eagles games in a big way and that flows through to the players. Will it turn out to be a Sheedy led thing, or a club thing that lasts?

And they lost James Hird too.. He always seemed to play especially well against west coast.. In terms of possessions, he played his best games against west coast..
Good point you make there though..

That is unbelievable

During our glory years of 95-99 it was the eagles. We had a clearly superior team on paper and yet they somehow managed to scrape wins against us every year. To this day I'm still wondering how.

Lately our bogy team seems to be Essendon. Ever since our first final when they spanked us we've arguably had a better team than them, yet we still haven't beaten them once in Melbourne. Hopefully this is about to change with the whisky nosed master finally gone.

Essendon have been somewhat of a thorn for both West Aussie sides yes. :D
