You don't know anything about our youth. There is a lack of elite end talent, but they are certainly not poor.
I'd be genuinely interested to hear which clubs you think Richmond's under 23 talent is better than. Not saying they can't be developed or come on but on paper it looks very, very thin.

Very ordinary in comparison to other clubs. Bottom 3.

I think the amount of time collecting silverware in previous years has definitely stunted our number of elite youths. Also haven’t been lucky enough to have father sons fall in our lap. Yes we haven’t got a first this year, so I’m hoping our recruiting team get creative.

Carlton have been rebuilding for ever, they should be embarrassed to be in a list convo with 2 of the oldest lists in the league that have had much recent success

I never bother with treads like this. If we'd all listened to the "neutrals" on Big Footy, we'd be convinced that Richmond's 2017 to 20 teams were barely wooden spoon worthy, such is the salt Richmond's success has generated. I don't think Big Footy as a community is anywhere near capable of providing a neutral assessment of Richmond's list.
The conclusion will always be iTth dA WiRthT eVAz :drunk:

Don’t get upset. Just feel for Taranto and Hopper. Probably unlikely to play finals footy for the remainder of their careers.

I agree. When being up there for so long, it’s difficult to keep planning for the future when you feel you can go again and again.

I don’t think much of Carlton’s youth either.

But Geelong’s is a mile in front of the 3. Just take a look at the weekend defeating a top 8 team with plenty of promising kids playing. And they still have another 1st round pick this season.

I feel like if carlton did a direct list swap with either teams, carlton would be bottom of the ladder whilst the other team would atleast be competing for finals.

Really an indictment on how pathetic my club has been run..

Zero chance. We only get 9 now
Been that way for a long time but aparently it’s no issue when other clubs have far more home games …and then you have the likes of Tigers and Collingwood who despite not being classes as home games continue to play at the MCG their home ground far more often than they play away.

It didn't feel like all that long ago we had 7 at Kardinia Park, 2 at Docklands and 2 at MCG.

We were saying similar things back in 2014 when it was only Selwood and then a couple of older players having to switch position and play midfield. Stokes & Johnson along with newcomers like T. Hunt, Duncan, Christensen, Horlin-Smith, Caddy.

The rise of Duncan & Guthrie were profound. Guthrie took time but it eventually took the burden away from Dangerfield and Selwood.

Things can turn quickly.
Club will have plenty of $$$ to splash around for the first time in a while given the retirements of past/current players likely done at the end of 2023.

In 2006 when Geelong missed the finals, there were plenty of pundits, led by Brereton, iirc, that said Geelong's problem was they didn't have any stars.

Remember it clearly. Also remember the "experts" declaring that only one Victorian team could challenge the interstate teams in 2007 - Melbourne. The moral of the story is you cannot believe anything these "experts" say as they write crap that is designed to sell newspapers or boost ratings.

I don't know how quickly we'll rebound, but even if we completely bottomed out, lists can regenerate and compete for the 8 in only a couple of years. Taranto and Hopper have another 6 years lol. The Pies were 17th two years ago? Look how incredible your team has become.

Hopper & Taranto's best years are going to be spent outside the eight.

Collingwood's core was young back in 2019-2020.
They are going to be in a premiership window for the next 3 years.

Going right back to the actually question, the answer is - I have no idea. People who pretend to have any idea of the potential of their own list, let alone a foreign clubs, is utterly delusional. This is a Bay 13 thread with more trolls in it than a 90's toy store.

...with the Geelong list to keep them company :D

I trust Geelong's program a bit more than Richmond.
We were written off in 2013.
We developed Guthrie, Duncan, Blicavs,
Kolodjashnij, Stewart.
Lost Menzel & Kelly and brought in Cameron & Dangerfield.

Currently seeing steady improvement from Miers, Holmes, De Koning, Stengle, Henry's, Guthrie and a various others.

What we need is two quality free agents to replace Dangerfield and Hawkins and I think we are hanging around for a long time.

I wouldn't have any idea if I should trust Geelong's 'program' more than Richmond's. You shouldn't either. Richmond was written off in 2016, told to our youth was deplorable, that we should strip the list bare and rebuild again. The next year we won the flag and used that 'deplorable list' likened to Fitzroy before they folded, to win another two flags after that. Your youth could be building to become the next 4-peat as far as I know but Richmond's recruiter and development team have just as many runs on the ball, if not more, than Geelong or Carlton.

You are going to miss finals for the second time in three years.

What makes you think improvement comes next year when you look at the current regression of some of your older brigade?

You won the flag last year yet have struggled to string together games off the back of an aging list and a group of supposedly promising youth. What makes you think you will not continue to slide down the ladder for the next 3 years?

Your forgot Bruhn and a couple of kids over the weekend who looked good like Knevitt, Close, Esava.

They're not "supposedly" promising, they are objectively promising. That doesn't mean they are all guaranteed to reach their current, projected ceilings, but they're being given a lot of unexpected games due to our injury situation, which is accelerating their progress (or, in some cases, may allow us to more quickly identify deficiencies and either move on or work through them).

At the moment, I don't know if our season will end with a whimper, or if we'll be having another red hot go in September, but I'm certainly having fun watching events unfold and waiting to find out. In either case, and more relevant to this thread, I am absolutely certain that what we're going through right now, and the games these promising players are getting, is going to result in a team that is stronger next year than it is right now.
