Which team out of Adelaide, North and Hawthorn has the better youth? Part 2

Dowling should have been playing all season.

Didn't attend one CBA on Thursday night and still looked solid with 17 disposals and a goal. Must play every week now!

Is Zac Taylor a chance at a gig soon? Liked him in his draft year as well.

Zac Taylor's form in the SANFL has of course been ignored and he is injured now:

Very keen to hear the opinion of those that fought tooth and nail with SYL and I re Adelaideā€™s midfield. We heard over and over Laird and Crouch would be moved sideways once the young brigade was ready.

I was smashed for suggesting Rachele and Pedlar were not going to figure in Adelaideā€™s 2024 midfield due to their inability to build any sort of tank.
Pedlar a mile off it stillā€¦ (a shoulder doesnā€™t limit your ability to work so injury is not an acceptable defence) and is struggling in a woeful SANFL Adelaide.
Rachele not trusted for midfield minutes despite injury except when an oppo is being thrashed. He has no 2 way engine.
They are both 80/20 forwards/mids. Always have been. Always will be. At a stretch it may get to 65/35.

So Kane and Mr Mysteryā€¦ howā€™s that working for you? Still claim I didnā€™t watch enough or hard enough?

Pedlar was always an if he keeps fit case.

This year he got his face smashed in in round one, round two he was idiotically asked to tag Stewart, then all of a sudden his confidence down and rather then back him in we dropped him. Then he comes back and hurts his shoulder. I agree with you though he may never have the tank but thatā€™s the only thing standing in his way (other than the coach).

Rachele is again also the coach. As another Hawks poster pointed out we are often a conservative, vanilla club. We get a talent like him with all the personality and flair in the world and rather than embrace and nurture it, what do we do? We put him at high half forward, the position on the ground where itā€™s hardest to find the footy, but you often have to cover the most ground. Heā€™s neither deep forward where he can be really creative and damaging, nor is he around the ball or the time where we can use his attributes. Itā€™s dumb coaching. Him not playing on ball is nothing to do with him not having a tank. He could easily be employed as 50/50 mid/deep forward with his current level of fitness.

Preaching to the choir.

We draft a kid, extend his contract before heā€™s even played a game, suggesting we rate him highly.

Then we take half a season to debut him when heā€™s been consistently in our best handful of players in the reserves, and then when we do we give him no opportunity to play the position heā€™s been picked for.

Nicks has this ****ing weird mentality where you seem to have to earn a place in the midfield rotation by playing half forward/wing.

The most frustrating part though was in the last quarter we had an extra number at the stoppage coming up from half forward. This would be the perfect opportunity to give some exposure to an AFL stoppage to players like Rachele or Dowling who are sitting in the forward line, instead we gave that role to McHenry, who canā€™t fight his way out of a wet paper bag.

I wouldnā€™t be giving up as a crows supporter. Think it might just be a case of one step back to go two steps forward this year.

Seems that the older guys have dropped off a little and the next gen havenā€™t quite picked up the slack. Will still be a dangerous side this year and could easily rise up the ladder next year.

Hawks would be delighted with their progress, just need to keep adding talent to the list, but you can see a style and plan to how they want to play.

North way away from anything. They have lost leaders like Goldy, Cunnington and Ziebell and replaced them with no one and also lost Ben McKay to an already weak defence. Clarko looks to be going through the motions too.

With 18 soon to be 19 sides, too hard to predict who is closer to a flag, could be none of them in the foreseeable future. But closest too being a finalist and becoming a contender, Iā€™d still say Adelaide.
Not with you on North. They need to trade smart for some serviceable kpps, get at least one top level player in and a couple of really good top draft picks. They will be competitive

Hawthorn look to be doing the rebuild the right way. Experienced players still there to teach the kids. A mix of traded players, and developed talent, with a fairly strong midfield & a mosquito fleet of good small forwards. They need to sort their spine, get their ruck set, and KPD & KPF talent. Chol is good for them, provides a physical contest, but you'd hope someone emerges that can be a 50 goal per year forward if they're to be a serious threat. At their current level, they just can't score heavily enough if sides absolutely get a run on for a period. They're relying on mids to really overcome other sides to uphold defence, and push forward heavily. Do their mids dispose of the ball efficiently enough to get the best out of any forward they do get? All to be answered one day, but for now, the build is looking pretty good. Most of all, a mentality that is hungry for success is obvious from their kids.

Adelaide seem to be struggling with developing their picks into anything beyond journeyman grade players. Some of that blame has to be on not rewarding players who are performing well at SANFL level. It would be demoralising to be overlooked for others who have been struggling to make an impact at AFL level. The midfield is a serious issue, as are most areas of the field. There does not seem to be a particular strategy to building a gameplan or side that has anything beyond "vanilla" footy. I'm not sure if I'm capping here as I don't watch a ton of the Crows, but they seem to absolutely struggle under adversity, & some of the players who left for other sides had the kind of ticker they needed, but may have even left because of pea heartedness of the rest of them. Finals are out of the picture, so this is where they should be playing kids, giving players a proper run, start to tap the has beens on the shoulder, review the list, who is traded, who goes for draft currency, accept that you'll likely lose if it's the most senior side or one with more kids, just start the actual process of turning some of it over. I don't think Nicks will do that.

North probably have the talents on their list to have some genuine superstar players. They also lack the experienced players to teach them. It's important to have people at the club who can help what are young men, who are inexperienced, & only beginning not just as AFL players, but as adults. Last year they had a few, it might be worth looking for a couple of older guys, from successful systems to be those on field coaches ala Hodge at Lions, or what Bruest, Gunston are doing for the Hawks forwards. Coaches only go so far. I believe that part of the issue is a culture one, similar to Melbourne at our lowest. The stink, feeling & depression of being losers, being a club on the bottom, it infects the players mentality, it's hard to play well when you're pessimistic, worried & don't have belief. I think North have some amazing kids, but they also may struggle for retention. I think in a way being a small club, it's less appealing, playing in front of small crowds, with a limited history. Kids coming up the draft are born after Norths heyday, in their lifetimes all North have ever been are losers, also rans, a tiny club always trying to keep up with the bigger ones, and I can't imagine the disappointment at playing for them compared to a big club with history within these kids living memory. That may sound incredibly insulting, but it was true of Melbourne too, who the F would have been happy being drafted to us 2012-16?
