North with another pick #1 should be winning this thread.

Reckon Hawks have potentially found a CHB as well ……. with a recent growth spurt Serong is now 197cm athletic with good skills. A nice little surprise since being drafted!

So 1st the argument was from crowies was “we’ve got 4 elite to your “3”…. so we far far better.

“And we are pushing for finals with all our elite youth.. and AA potential youth if they played more senior footy youth” IMG_9711.png

Now we are back to… we’re 12th with one elite recently dropped small forward.

Looking at that, Fremantle have the best youth followed by the dogs.

But given north will have a bumper draft pick array, should have the best youth, even if unproven and raw
North may have the best youth when they walk through the door but their development has been mediocre and has resulted in them falling behind the others. Having the best 18yr old is irrelevant if you don't end up with the best 24 yr old.

If you look at the timelines over the last few year they should be 1 year ahead of the crows and we should be 1 year behind. But more than likely crows will be playing finals next year we will be pushing for finals and North will still be bottom 4.

Hopefully Clarko he can fix these issues and things start to improve for them

What people need to consider with North is they aren't years into a rebuild they have pretty much started again last year after failed attempts the few years prior.

They don't have much to show from the 2013-2017 period, the 2018-2022 was a failure due to a few things, bad decisions at the trade table, some bad recruiting and a lack to leaders and system to develop the talent correctly.

2013-2016:
Luke Macdonald
Kayne Turner
Ben McKay
Jy Simpkin
Nick Larkey
Cameron Zurhaar

The 2013 to 2015 was especially bad, many players in those drafts are now in their prime and looking at AA, there 2016 draft was solid a real saving grace.

2017-2021:
Luke Davies-Uniacke
Tarryn Thomas
Curtis Taylor
Bailey Scott
Will Phillips
Tom Powell
Josh Goater
Paul Curtis

They hit there first top 5 draft pick in 2017 but fumbled the rest, 2018 was a better draft from them but has its issues. The big mistake came in 2019 they should have never have traded out of the first round they missed some serious talent and then fumbled there later picks when there was plenty of good players still available. 2020 like 2018 was a better draft but still has issues, Phillips might not have been the best selection at that pick but he looks like he will make it, Powell isn't a bad selection but when you consider they missed the likes of Serong, Day, Warner, Pickett to get him. And we know what happened with their 2021 draft.

In 2022 they bring in Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw with a few others that look like they could make it. They sign Clarko to 5 years and they bring in older heads like Shiels, Tucker, Logue, Howe to fill out there list holes. This should be considered year 1.

Hawthorn are an interesting comparison as there have been some criticized high end trades, selling the farm on multiple occasions.

2013-2016:
James Sicily
Jarman Impey
Blake Hardwick
Mitchell Lewis
Harry Morrison
Jack Scrimshaw
Conor Nash

Now some of those guys were traded in but that's what we ended up with. Some great value pick ups and trades have offset some poor high end trading.

2017-2021:
James Worpel
Dylan Moore
Changkuoth Jiath
Ned Reeves
Jacob Koschitzke
Will Day
Finn Maginness
Denver Grainger-Barras
Seamus Mitchell
Josh Ward
Connor MacDonald

Comparing the 2 teams you notice a few things, most clubs over the period without the same draft hand but a much better strike rate with later picks than North. This sort of highlights that a good recruitment department, coaching and development is more important than high end picks.

Hawthorn still have loads of work to do but they are actually further along in their rebuild than North despite spending less time at the bottom and trading multiple high end picks.

And yet won the vote in this thread comfortably

Freo have had a really disappointing year, expected hawthorn to win by 5 goals today
Freo have promising youth and are similar to Hawthorn age wise & games played etc. It is a negligible difference. They look ok. Good system and fast. Should be part of the conversation.

Hawthorn were missing the only two players on their list who actually really matter. Anyone thinking there was a chance of winning doesn't understand our list at all.

You guys have multiple tall forward options. We have one. You guys have multiple experienced midfield leaders. We have one (and he is a kid).
