who do you want as the local rookies

To me its totally irrelevant.
Rookies should be taken with an eye to the senior side.
Those seen as possible senior top ups should only be taken, & team balance for the Suncoast Lions secondary.

Are we the only ones thinking logically on this site BB? What's the matter with everyone else? Recruiting on the bases of "where the player comes from rather than talent" is the quickest way to oblivion.

Our recruiting policy should be "to recruit the best possible talent available, irrespective of where they come from". I am absolutely dismayed that a section of our supporter base would rather us ignore the talent pool available to us in order to recruit QLDers.

Tim Brown is not classified as a local rookie... Played with Geelong Falcons so comes under as your normal rookie! Just training with Brisbane to impress up until the Rookie Draft, so i have heard...

I think that is a little harsh for the following reasons:

1. Most relevantly we have three extra local picks so a consideration of the local guys is extremely appropriate.
2. Where talent is equal it is appropriate to take a local. Even the supposed experts have said a lot of the remaining talent is Qld based.
3. Most of the higher profile remaining guys will be training with other clubs and there is the gentlemens agreement that there won't be any poaching.
4. Given that most people on here really only have seen the local guys it is only natural that they would like to see their favoured players get a game at the Lions.
5. You have more knowledge of the available options and you haven't exactly been whetting our appetite with other options.

Agree. Join me with you and Bobby Irel. Recruit the best no matter where from.

What does that mean?

I find that hard to believe. Why wouldn't the Lions simply invite every QLD rookie they (and others) are considering drafting, thus denying them to everyone else?

I agree on this BB I was just throwing it out there as an observation on the lack of tall forwards. I think if they are worried the Suncoast and they don't think anyone is worthy of being rookied they should recruit a tall forward outside of the Lions structure. It is always good for the mids to have a good target up front.

Wont Pask still be playing there?

Ok quigs, before the rookie draft I will provide at least six non-QLDers that IMO would come under consideration for our rookie list.
I mentioned one already on another thread. :)

Are you sure, you are not confusing an offer to a trail with an actual rookie spot on the list?

Scott CLOUSTON (Morningside)
DOB: 2 February 87
191cm 84kg

KP Player and former soccer goalkeeper.
Another of Browning’s converts from a different sport.

Great Irel I'll be looking forward to it.

I did read your other rookie suggestion with interest. I can't remember his name off the top of my head but I enjoy hearing about these types of guys. We did alright out of Roe this year and Clark was also well worth giving a shot too. A similar return from interstate this year from guys a little bit older than the norm would be handy.

no i asked him if it was just an invitation to trial...he said that it wasnt and he has been offered a place on the rookie list...i have been mates with him for years but have never really seen him play or anything...can the boy make it??? he seems he could play on the wing or take the third tall or be the third tall...he needs to bulk up though but he has the height

Yah I know, but I thought he'd still be allowed to play for Suncoast?

Or is it Brisbane Lions listed players only? Not one that were?

Only current Lions-listed players, Sunshine Coast juniors and occasionally top-up players from other teams (usually u18's who may have a bye on that weekend) can play for Suncoast. Is Pask remains in Qld and is till playing he can either go back to those scoundrel dogs, the Western Magpies (;) :D ) or more likely find a AFLQ club willing to have his services (and I'm guessing that'd be all of them). IMO, if he's not rookie-listed with another club he'll probably end in up the SANFL or VFL.

1) *The player I identified was Lachlan BUTTON. A Forward/Ruck, Ruck/Forward prospect in the Tippet mould. Enormous upside. IMO we need another specialist forward to ease the pressure from Browny and start blooding another youngster. Strawb has gone to defense so we need to start developing someone else. I see Brown occupiyng a Lynch type role from here on. Lachlan is only 18 years old, 199cm and physically ready for AFL at a well developed 95kg.

Others not necessarily in any particular order;

2) * Sam FIELDING - Clarence Tasmania

DOB 30 September 88 181cm 80kg(aprox.)
Tasmanian Captain at the nationals.
Has skill and pace ideally suited for a running game, however has also been given tagging roles on big blokes for Tassie Mariners in the VFL. Over the last twelve months has provided the drive from the midfield to his CHF Jack Riewoldt at Clarence.
He’s an athlete that combines speed and endurance. Has a good kick and accurate disposal with improving defensive skills as well.
Plenty of upside development.

3) * Jarryn GEARY - Bendigo/Eaglehawk
23 June 88 183cm 75kg

A long limbed mobile midfielder who knows how to use the ball and find the goals.
Naturally talented, very versatile, tackling machine.
Very reminiscent of Rischitely and will need some considerable physical development. The material is there. I am sure Brisbane will put the building blocks together.
Jarryn easily meets Leigh's criteria of running/mobile players who also posses skill and athleticism.

4) * Sharrod WELLINGHAM - Perth, 184,cm 80kg
An 18 year old agile flanker or an outside midfielder with speed and skill. Ideal modern footballer in the Bulldogs type mould.

5) * Angus LALLY - Glenelg 182cm 80kg
A young 18 year old defender. Angus has hardness, courage, wonderfully explosive kick (Drummond like) and exceptionally sharp football brain. Also has great footy instinct and good decision making intuitiveness about his football.
Has been injured for part of the year and has gone under the radar. Perfect opportunity to pick up a good value player through the rookie system.

6) * Mat O'DWAYER - Calder Cannons
DOB 21/07/88, 74kg
Explosive ball magnet, elusive and a player with some magic about him. Kicks goals as well. Has played as a midfielder, winger/flanker or forward pocket.

These are players that I would be delighted to get on our list. Rarely mentioned if ever on the Draft and Trading board.

IMO these are diamonds in the rough type picks. All are great risk players however the rookie list is where chances are taken. We have seen when the club has taken the chance in some instances it has paid off handsomely. Roe, Stiller, Harding being the precedent.

Please note, IMO, if I was drafting I would take them all ahead of any QLD based player that is available for the rookie draft.

Thanks irel, I always enjoy your posts about young prospects. :)

We have 3 priority picks for local rookies. Do these spots HAVE to be used for locals? Or say, if we decide that all the locals (in one year) are particularly shait, can we pass up on them and use these picks for other players?

In any case, I think we'll be able to pick up 3 good Queensland prospects. As for the rest, best available (in terms of biggest upside) all the way. Like you said, there's higher chance of rookies flopping, but for the little investment, I think it's well worth the risk to have as many rookies as we can, as long it's a financially viable thing to do.
