I have to say I am feeling pretty ****ing smug right now.

Last player I felt off about was Stephenson and I was right to.

Before that going back a long time was Shane Watson, The Skunk.
Before that would be Craig Starcevic and Scotty Russell.

Early on l criticised Scott Burns for not going in hard enough:(

My mate constantly reminded me of that.
Not sure I criticised Burns for hardness but to me he was very vanilla and a disappointment first few times I saw him. Now one of my favourite players and the best centre clearance player we have had. Rarely got beaten one on one and used the ball beautifully. Had he played with higher rotations that can compensate for his lack of tank I think he would be rated a lot higher externally outside Collingwood.

Not that I ever slag off at our players here - because I don’t trust or rate my own judgement on such matters, so I don’t feel the need to inflict my thoughts on others, though I’m happy to read what others think - but I privately thought Maynard, in his first 10-15 games or so, was a hard at it, but skill challenged hack, combining the dreaded combination of shocking decision making and execution, prone to regular brain farts. I reckon he goes alright now - and his brain farts limited to just once or twice a year.

Most of mine have already been stated;

Ben Johnson I thought was too unskilled. Ditto Toovey.
Nathan Murphy I thought was too vanilla.

I can add that I thought Danny Stanley had something to offer as a centre square midfielder. I also had serious concerns about De Goey early in his career as he seemed to try to do too much, and try to beat too many opponents with brute strength.

In the 2005 draft i wanted us to take Xavier Ellis at #2 and Daisy at #5.

We would have missed out on Pendles.

I had a moment where I thought Pendles was too slow to be an elite AFL footballer.

hehe, pretty embarrassing

I can't remember when it was exactly. I think it might have been his first or second year.

It’s a funny one, as I reckon it’s almost hard to fault you for that, as Pendles is absolutely in a category of slow that would hamper 99% of player’s chances of making it at top level, let alone excelling at it.

It really speaks testaments to the extraordinary talent he is. I genuinely reckon Pendles may be the best I’ve seen play the game.

Scotty Russell looked like silked cream from day 1!

Where are all the posters saying they were wrong about Maynard 😂 this thread should be full of them.

Right here. His mistakes were horrible in the first couple of years, but his kicking has improved so much that he became a terrific player. Very happy to be proven wrong.

Surprised Nick Maxwell hasn’t had more mentions

Bringing back Beams was worth it to get genuine A Grade talent after falling so short in the 2018 Granny (and getting IQ as an NGA reducing the cost).

Respect

Many others said so at the time, but it’d be hard to find any who admit it now

I thought Marley Williams would turn out to be what Brayden Maynard has become. Marley had the talent, but his character flaws got in the way.

I wasn’t upset at all about our trading at the end of 2020 - but I did think trading Jayden Stephenson would turn out to be a mistake. What is it about us offloading our dirty laundry to North Melbourne?

I thought Oliver Henry would be a bust - let alone being in any position to request a trade to Geelong.

I thought Cameron Wood would be terrible - but that was obviously overstating his potential.

It would break BF. There were so many naysayers in his first season, and after.

Steele. I said he was too slow to be an effective midfielder/wing. This was after a game against St Kilda at Etihad. We copped a thumping but even though Steele was named in our best I was unimpressed.
