Who is the best tagger in the game?

Yeah jones is outstanding, Picken has also been very good this year
Jones has been brilliant at tagging in recent years and at his best was also capable of 30 possie games himself, with plenty of clearances and contested possies (albeit with frequently very poor kicking), but his effect has really dropped off this year, even though he apparently had a full pre-season, after being underdone and/or carrying an injury for much/all of last year.

Those he's played on this year have had some pretty high possie games for someone Jones is playing on (including a 42 from Ablett, who Jones has generally done really well on in the past, in round two) and he hasn't been getting as much of the ball as he usually does himself, so Clint quietly found himself playing in the VFL this weekend, for prolly the first time in years.

Really needs to lift, as Watters has been asking the likes of Goddard, Dal Santo, Hayes, Montagna, Armitage, Ray and Steven to go head to head with those Jones usually tags and they've been doing pretty well at it of late, so the need for a "pure tagger" has lessened.

Lyon seems to really get the best out of his taggers, unsurprising I guess since he's a defensively minded coach.

I thought Crowley was pretty much finished coming into this season. He'd been deteriorating markedly over the last few years but under Lyon he's back to career best tagging form.

Carazzo just over Scott Selwood. Probably the only taggers who are good enough to run off and influence the game themselves ATM.

I don't think I have ever seen Joel Selwood tagged as well as Scott did on Friday night.

Without a doubt, it's Clint Jones. If the question was who is the best scragger, then it's a clear win to Crowley.

Crowley, though he never gets any of the ball himself, just blankets his player.

Very Wrong - Another case of common misconception - you should try actually watching some games - depends on who he is tagging. In half his games he will do damage the other way, including scoring goals.

I'm a little biased, so if not Crowley then Carazzo, who is more damaging the other way than any mentioned here. Though I do remember many damaging games by Crowley, including a couple of 4 goal hauls, one against Geelong.

Crowley def very effective gary jrs tears should tell you that...
Plus he kicks goals, classic tagger.

I think taggers get unfairly lumped in the dirty player category sometimes. Players like Jones and Picken aren't really dirty at all. Have seen a few opposition supporters labelling Picken dirty and calling him a cheap sniper etc. It couldn't be further from the truth. He plays fairly and doesn't really complain when he gets the extra treatment from the opposition players.

Averaging nearly 15 touches this year and he's kicked 11 goals. Not too bad for a tagger.

Not going to be really considered the best tagger in the game though with those sorts of stats though. Doesn't average a great deal amount of tackles either at 3.4 a game

I agree with a few of the other comments. Does a good job stopping his opponent, but not a great deal of damage the other way.

Kieran Jack has been given run with roles this season averaging 24.5 disposals, 5.7 tackles and 22 goals.

Even Craig Bird who's used as a forward tag on opposition defenders gets more than Crowley if we're looking at stats. (16 disposals a game, 4.3 tackles and 11 goals.)

Throughout the last 5-6 years Cameron Ling and Clinton Jones have held the honour as the best taggers in the game IMO. Since Lingys retirement and Jones' role change who do you think is the best tagger or shut down player the game at the moment?

Jones doesn't deserve to be mentioned along with Ling.

I'd go with Carrazzo. (Wash my mouth out!) I find it hard to rate Jones because nearly every time he's played against Collingwood he's got himself smashed into the turf by either Swan or Pendles and to be fair, I haven't seen that much of him outside of that.

You see him holding Ablett off the ball all night up in Darwin??

Is there anyone that can help the channel 7 commentary team?

Getting rid of Spruce Bruce and Harley would be a start. Bring in Huddo (I know C10 but still) and someone whose not so conscious of their biased that the actually go a full 180 and start bagging them to come across as "un-biased".

Let Dennis CALL the footy and not have a mutual masturbation session with Bruce would be a start aswell...

I'd rather listen to Lloyd, Richo and Derm talk about their hairstyles than listen to the "call" from C7, I've actually started to mute the TV and listen to the radio over the top of the vision now its that bad, and I'm not one to care so much about commentary.

Really wish Clinton Grybas was still with us, reckon him and Huddo would make a good pair....
