Who on your team is worthy of going #1?

People are way underestimating the value of a no1 pick.

You have to remember that on average you only get one every 16 years ( unless your Carlton) and alot of teams have never had one.

Also its unlikely that the no1 pick will ever be traded again so if you do have it, you would have just finished last (unless your Carlton):D.

So you really want a franchise player that will be your best player for at lesst 5 years and a top 10 player in the league for at least five years.

So players like Hille,Petrie, bolton,Mcveigh, swan etc while all very good players. You would be pretty disappointed if you used pick 1 on them.

From a slightly different perspective here and not what the OP asked for, but in a very literal sense, you could look at who was the best player from each draft. technically pick 1 should be the best player.

From Essendon the only player I can think of would be Lloyd from 1995. I'm not sure about Fletcher 1992, he could be close.

My other nominations would be:

1996 Nathan Brown
1997 Chad Cornes
1998 Brendan Fevola
1999 Matthew Pavlich
2000 Nick Reiwoldt
2001 Judd/Ablett
2002 Brendan Goddard (shit draft)
2003 Adam Cooney
2004 Lance Franklin

Probably proves that drafting has been almost exacted since 1999 with the best players effectively going top 5 in each draft from then on.

The best way to look at this is to say who was the best player from each draft. technically pick 1 should be the best player, we have to ignore needs here or the discussion would get ridiculous.

My other nominations would be:

1996 Nathan Brown

Problem is you exclude certain zone selections.

If Warren Tredrea, Brendon Lade and Peter Burgoyne were eligible for that particular draft instead of Port zone selections they'd just about go 1-3.

Tredders and Ladey definitely #1 and #2 anyway. Brown at #3. Throw a blanket over Pickett, Montgomery, Jason Johnson, Russell Robertson and Burgoyne for #4-#8.

Richardson
Deledio
Cotchin
N.Brown

Shame we picked Tambling instead of Franklin or Roughhead.

Shame we picked Skinny Winger instead of Pavlich.

Oh well!!

Roughead is an interesting one. Can argue both ways on him I guess.

Nothing to argue about with Roughead. Big power forwards that actually have ability don't turn up in every draft. A worthy #1 pick he would be. He did go #2.

He was only 20 at the beginning of last season and kicked 70 goals and took 127 marks for the H&A season rotating between CHF and FF, usually playing 2nd fiddle to Buddy.

Without debating their actual positions, it took a lot longer for guys like Pav, Tredrea, Fev and Brown who are now all top recognized forwards to have those sorts of numbers. Guys like Lloyd and Richo are the only other's I can think of to have such a dominant start to their careers.

Roughead continually gets underrated on this board. Easily the 2nd best player in that draft, given his age, production and versatility (could easily step in and be one of the best 5 CHB's in the league).

Worth a no.1 and then some.

Some of the other ones being mentioned though like Hille, McVeigh (either one), Goddard, Fisher, Foley etc...wouldn't go close.

From Collingwood, it's Pendlebury and possibly Didak. That's the list.

Hille
Mcveigh.
Lonergan (doesn't grab any attention. I like it that way - this kid is amazing).

At the start of there careers:

Lloyd/Lucas/Fletcher.

If he is worthy of a number 1 draft selection I then submit the entire Hawthorn list and the entire Geelong list for consideration. And the Collingwood list minus Toovey. And most of everyone else's lists.

G. Ablett
J. Bartel
J. Corey
J. Selwood
M. Scarlett
S. Johnson
P. Chapman
D. Milburn

Some won't agree with possibly Corey, Chapman and Milburn but for me they have been constant superstars over their playing careers.

Johnson is one of the questionable three, not Corey. Johnson wouldn't be worth a number 1 pick despite how good he is at what he does, and he wouldn't even come close in the draft he was drafted in.

Rightttt...You do know he is the best small forward in the game (didak close 2nd) and is a Norm Smith medalist 2007, Geelongs leading goalkicker 2008, All Australian 2007-2008 and a player any team would want in their forward line!

He's all those things (but Didak is better, and Medhurst was better last year). But he would also never ever be drafted at pick 1 in a reasonable draft.

No way would i justify using a number one pick on Bolton or McVeigh.

The way i view number one picks is i want an out and out star and nothing short of that. For WCE i would have only Kerr and Cox in that bracket. Did not include Nick Nat purely because he has not played a game.

Other sides i would include the likes of Pavlich, Brown, Judd, Franklin, Richardson, Ablett, Bartel, Hodge, Brent Harvey and Chad Cornes.

C. Bolton is probably our most important and underrated player. I would definitely have been happy with a number 1 pick for him. One of the best defenders in the game.

McVeigh won our B&F last year, and is looking even better this year. Might still be early days, but I reckon he'll progress to being a genuine star this year.
