His name comes up a bit when senior coaching gigs come up, is there a reason why he’s never got one?
Has been an assistant for the same length of time as McRae was. Kingsley and Yze both got looked over many times before they got their chance.

Caracella got a ton of kudos for the work he did in Richmond's first 2 flags; now Essendon VFL coach - I wonder if that's to boost his CV coaching his own side or the Bombers moved him sideways out of the AFL mix?

Would also look closely at Dean Cox, Luke Power and Jarrad Schofield.

In addition, I reckon we might have to let D.Burgess (& his Scottish tackling specialist) go.
He's potentially being paid as much as the head coach ( & maybe why our coaching panel is running so lean ) but in his 4th year, I'm just not seeing any tangible results.

Imagine how bad we'd be if we didn't have him.

The most reliable way of getting a coach who takes your club to a premiership is getting an experienced assistant coach - who has been part of a successful club. That last part is critical. He needs to have been part of a successful system.

Look at the last ten different AFL premiership coaches:

Craig McRae - assistant coach during Richmond flags 2017, 19, 20

Chris Scott - assistant at Fremantle 2008-10, no flags

Simon Goodwin - assistant at Essendon 2010-14, no flags

Damien Hardwick - assistant during 2008 Hawthorn flag

Adam Simpson - assistant during 2013 Hawthorn flag

Luke Beveridge - assistant during 2010 Collingwood flag and Hawthorn flags 2013, 14

Alastair Clarkson - assistant during 2004 Port flag

John Longmire - assistant during 2005 Sydney flag

Mick Malthouse - existing premiership coach from West Coast flags 1992, 95. Before winning his first flag, was senior coach at Footscray 1984-89, no flags

Mark Thompson - assistant during 1999 North flag

8 of the last 10 premiership coaches had already been part of a premiership as an assistant or senior coach.
Sshhhh
They’ll hire VB

Great post.

Special note that Chris Scott inherited one of the best teams of all time.

Our coaching panel is poor because we are as tight as a fishes…
We are well known for being very cheap with coaches pay etc… we run the club as a business first and foremost. Winning is a very distant second to finances.
I suspect we have a LOT of long term staff members on the fringes that are all getting paid, rather than paying more for better coaches.

Would be happy to have Burgess back at Melbourne.

How about we swap Burgess and a draft pick for Goodwin and Petty?

Just like Tottenham in the EPL. 😭
I follow two clubs of a similar mindset

Would we look at Goodwin, or is there too much smoke and rumours regarding him?

Both Melbourne and Goody look like they could do with a change.
If Goodwin sets foot in this club in any official capacity (other than as an ex-player), I will never pay another cent to the club.

So how many times in these close losses - including the game just gone, have we come back late and almost won. Most of our close games we have been 3-4 goals down late in the third or during the 4th quarter and have come home strong. I suspect that is Burgess

Got to remember fitness is only going to be a marginal advantage - a team isn’t going to be 10% fitter than everyone else

why so strong on that?
Because it will be yet another in the line of Roo's mates appointments. It will be another in the line of Craig's disciples. Just another indication that the boys club remains. (and I say nothing of his off field behaviour)
If he is working at the club, it says we haven't changed and haven't learnt. It says there is no way forward.
If that happens, I'm gone. For good.

Surely thats a little extreme. He has been at Melbourne 10 years and has been very successful.

What Melbourne/Goodwin have done is something to be emulated.

They brought in Paul Roos in 2013 and then Goodwin in 2014 where he served as an assistant for 2 years (2015/2016) before taking over.

Goodwin has coached 173 games. Is 100 - 72 - 1 and has a flag. He has made finals 3 out of his 7 years with a GF win, Prelim loss and Semi Final exit (by 13 points).

The difference here is that Goodwin is a premiership coach at AFL level. He has shown he has what it takes to deliver a flag.

Of all the boys club appointments to be upset about a premiership winning coach ain't one of them.

Melbourne have been a rabble most of the time I've been watching footy, now they're consistently one of the best teams. Their drafting and recruiting has been very good but if Nicks is ultimately responsible for our current predicament, then surely Goodwin deserves some kudos for the team they are now?

EDIT: I don't think he should be our next coach, just surprised at the strong reaction against him.

Buckley or Caracella .

Agree.

Although if you have a shortlist of 3 I wouldn't mind us interviewing Ashley Hansen as well.

Hansen spent 10+ years at the Bulldogs (both AFL and VFL) and coached them to a VFL flag. Joined Carlton in 2022 this year as forwards line coach. They were 8th in 2022 (11.8 goals a game) and 10th in 2023 (11.8 goals a game) and this year he switched to a more strategic offensive role (brought in Jordan Russel as line coach) and they are now 2nd in the AFL with 13.9 goals a game in 2024 - which will do him no harm.

Roo has been trying to get Goodwin in the door since he joined the board. Well before he won a premiership. That's a nice selling point for Roo, but the desire for him has been a total boys club move.
