My money is an experienced coach, currently working who has agreed to move to Pies in 2022.

It happened too quickly. Would think the assistant coaches are now being lined up.

Clarkson 2022!

1 Clarkson with Yze as assistant
2 Pyke with Tapping
3 Mitchell with Leppa
4 Choco with Yze
Bring in Dean Soloman
Bring back Hocking
Keep Selwood

So who will the 5th person on the panel be?
I have a bad feeling about a outsider coming in the panel to select a coach?

Don't engage Jason Dunstall unless you know for certain you won't get Clarko or Mitchell. He is hopelessly conflicted.

Why do we need a 5th person on the Panel?

2 Board members, GW, and CEO.

The 5th should be Nick Maxwell, to sort out whether the new coach will be a cultural fit.

I suspect they might engage a recruitment specialist who can guide the panel on the process and lead the due diligence. That's my take - plenty of knowledgeable football people with Wright and Licuria on the panel. We don't need a Dunstall or the like to be involved

Consider
  • Clarkson
  • Pyke
  • C. Scott (rumoured, but don't think he's gettable)
  • Mitchell
  • Kingsley
  • Yze
  • Tapping

50/50
  • Lyon (depends on what else is left, but certainly not high in my priority).
  • Caracella (read previously he's not interested in senior coaching, but he's a great assistant and tactical mind)

No
  • Harvey
  • Voss
  • Leppitsch (only as an assistant would I consider)
  • Williams (only as an assistant would I consider)

Apologise if mentioned already but I'm in favour of igniting the lost art of player/coach, Pendles!
He's not even the best Captain going around, what makes you think he would be a great coach?
Not casting aspersions on his playing or his contribution to the club, but I've seen occasions where he needed to be forceful, in voice and actions, and has come up short.

The board’s clinging desperately to power! Most definitely shaky.
I hope we do get the best candidate.
And that is Clarkson.

I think it's important to keep an open mind about who the best candidate is, and so should the recruitment panel. That might be a veteran or a new coach. I like Alastair Clarkson and even think I voted for him in this thread. But there may be someone else out there who is a better fit. I'm open to that.

If Clarkson is our goal, I think the best way to get him is to target Mitchell early and with very targeted leaks to the media so more than one reporter declares it a fait accompli.

My guess is that Hawthorn, much like Collingwood did many moons ago, will be forced to accelerate their decision on the Clarkson/Mitchell situation and, if the Hawks are worried about losing a club champ and one of the most highly-credentialed assistants in the game, could be persuaded to throw him the keys ahead of schedule, leaving Clarkson looking for a new home and motivated to prove he's still the best there is.

Personally, I can see three scenarios:

1. Collingwood are able to court Alastair Clarkson.

This is my preferred option as the guy is, by most people's standards, the best-credentialed person for the position, but I find it unlikely unless he's forced out the door at the Hawks.

The rebuild of the list is underway and on top of some impressive rookies that we've seen this year, Clarkson would have Grundy/Moore/JDG/Maynard/Crisp/Adams/Quaynor/Daicos either at or approaching AA-level football. He'd also get to work with #1 pick, Nick Daicos.

I think the level of universal respect for Clarkson could also work to unite what has mostly been a petulant, ungrateful, divided fan base for the better part of a decade.

2. Collingwood go through the recruitment process and hire Ross Lyon.

I'm warming to this and think it's probably the most likely scenario. I don't think that even Lyon's detractors could say he's not up for the job. He milked every ounce of talent out of those St Kilda sides and then took a perpetually-struggling Fremantle to the next level.

In the two years away from the job, he's smoothed out the rough edges on his persona, has a more rounded, approachable front and has had time to dwell and reflect on why things didn't work at Fremantle/Saints.

I'm less concerned about the 'defensive' style everyone moans about. I think he'd be mindful of this and encourage a more balanced gameplan moving forward. But as a general rule, I'd rather my team be able to defend first and foremost.

Lyon's experience is rounded (poor clubs, rich clubs, interstate clubs, old lists, young lists, prime lists) and I think the weight of a job like Collingwood wouldn't overawe him.

One thing is for certain - the Lyon wars on this forum could be worse than the Buckley ones. The moaning and melts I've seen already, just at the mere thought of Lyon, are unhinged.

3. Collingwood throw the keys to Sam Mitchell.

If the club identifies the need to go for a young coach to develop alongside a young list, I think Mitchell is the man.

He's won 4 premierships as a player, worked with West Coast as an assistant during a premiership and most recently has been working alongside the best in the industry at Hawthorn. I like the fact that he's been able to coach his own side at Box Hill and from what I've seen, he's a good communicator and looks like he'll be a natural.

Collingwood could surround Sam with a strong support team (think Leppa, Yze, other big names) and commit to going on a journey with him as he grows into the role.

There's a bit of history repeating in this - poaching a Hawk great to develop a young Magpie list.

Thoughts on the rest of the field:

Harvey/Sanderson - Club is looking for a fresh start. Dare say the assistants that have been here forever and a day don't represent that.

Choc Williams - There is a perception in the AFL, rightly or wrongly, that Choc, while a great motivator and a very sharp football mind, is too difficult to manage, especially as a head coach. At 62 I also doubt that he's a long-term prospect.

Yze - Could be credentialed and talented and the perfect fit, but I don't think he carries a brand that excites the masses or inspires anyone. Rightly or wrongly, Collingwood don't hire the Yze's of the world.

Kingsley - Read Yze

Don Pyke - I don't think he suits the club from a persona POV, nor do I think that he'd actually want the job after the damaging, intense fallout at Adelaide.

Burns - I don't think the club will go down the track of another ex-player so soon after Buckley.

Lepp - I see him as a better senior assistant than head coach. A dark horse in this field though.

I wouldn't count out Brad Scott from the club's thinking. Did fairly well to keep a roos side competitive without ever bottoming out for low picks. He's only been out of the game for 2 years and was apparently well respected in coaching circles. The knock being that he persisted with older players for middling ladder returns but that could easily have been a club mandate. North literally can't afford to be down the bottom of the ladder for too long.

Speaking of Lyon, I can't think of a single coach who's won a flag with his third club after failing to do so at the previous two clubs.

You can stop thinking.

Just as 100 years of history was against Buckley it is against Lyon (and Brad Scott).

Lyon has held the role of senior coach for 13 seasons across 2 clubs and no coach has ever won their first flag beyond their first 9 years in the job.

Just like Buckley he also suffers from the double whammy that he also lead Fremantle to 4 consecutive non finals appearances and only 1 coach (Malthouse top 5 era) has ever done that and still gone on to win their 1st flag.

While I think Lyon has coaching talent I'm not prepared to bet against all that history, while we should also carefully consider that the AFL is already looking at ways to improve scoring, reduce congestion and I wouldn't rule out future rule changes to reflect that desire.

Do we really want to employ a coach seen as being ultra defensive in his mindset within that landscape?

It's a pass for me.

Do you think that if Lyon is serious about coaching again, that he would go in with the same defensive game style of coaching. Listening to him on the radio he has well and truly moved past that and has some great attacking ideas. I would say that he would already have an attacking game style that he is trying to sell. If not then it's a no from me

Without decent cattle you have nothing.
We don't have the cattle and besides a promising Nick Daicos next year, and he will need time.
The next coach faces huge challenges regarding the list and Retirements from our senior list.
Add to that our giving away draft picks etc.
One must wonder what coach is keen to come to us.
It will be a 4 to 5 year rebuild.

The club has said this is a 3-5 year rebuild, so I think it will be crystal clear to the new coach as to what needs to be done.

I still think with proper backing and patience many coaches will be lining up for the job.

I wonder if Dale Tapping is being considered. He did fantastic things when he was here. He is having success at Brisbane as an assistant now. His successes have come in a developing VFL side and an emerging Brisbane side. He has strong development credentials, which would have to appeal given our circumstances.
Totally agree. I would like to see Tapping short listed and interviewed.

Totally agree this will be a long journey that I hope end's with great success.
