Port Adelaide somehow flourished under Williams, which doesn't make sense, given his brash personality.

I would give him a chance, as success has followed him everywhere, while being 62 years old is considered old for AFL, it's considered only a number in American sports.

You can stop thinking.

Just as 100 years of history was against Buckley it is against Lyon (and Brad Scott).

Lyon has held the role of senior coach for 13 seasons across 2 clubs and no coach has ever won their first flag beyond their first 9 years in the job.

Just like Buckley he also suffers from the double whammy that he also lead Fremantle to 4 consecutive non finals appearances and only 1 coach (Malthouse top 5 era) has ever done that and still gone on to win their 1st flag.

While I think Lyon has coaching talent I'm not prepared to bet against all that history, while we should also carefully consider that the AFL is already looking at ways to improve scoring, reduce congestion and I wouldn't rule out future rule changes to reflect that desire.

Do we really want to employ a coach seen as being ultra defensive in his mindset within that landscape?

It's a pass for me.

With all due respect, the 'weight of history' argument is manipulated to suit whatever argument you want to make.

The weight of history is against everything, before it is achieved.

Before Malthouse, how many coaches had won flags with a third club, and after a 10-season stint with that third club?

Before 2016, how many teams had won a premiership from 7th?

Before 1977, how many clubs had gone from last to first on the ladder?

How many premiership coaches have Albanian heritage? Seems that the weight of history is against Adam Yze.

I'll back in Lyon, or whoever else we go with, to do the job and f*** history.

Nothing could be worse than having McGuire and Buckley as President and Coach.
Of course it can. Look at Carlton.
If we want the best coach we need a stable club. It’s anything but stable at the moment.

We may need to face the truth that our choices are limited.
An unstable board might make some applicants nervous.
The board need to sort this mess out now.

Nah, doubt it.

While Browne might have run on "replace Bucks" platform, I doubt he would run on a ticket of rocking the GW panel decision on a replacement coach, or push to defer that appointment for the 10+ weeks until he or his board was in a position to influence the appointment assuming he'd actually win, especially as he's already offered support to GW. Club needs to finalise that appointment ASAP, deferring it is purely Browne putting himself before the club.

You don’t think applicants might be worried about the board upheaval?

It would be more stable if McGuire shut his piehole.

Tend to think that, despite a shaky start, the board are getting things together. Browne can't do anything now, because he has no platform. They shut him down in regards to making room for him, so he needs to come up with 7 acceptable candidates, which will make it even messier.

Hatley can still push for an EGM, but that won't take place for around three months, by which time the coaching position will be settled, and the current board in all likelihood returned (O'Donnell may still present an issue).

Carlton are in the trouble they are in because they still have failed the most basic test - they don't know where they are. They are an average team that lacks two or three hard midfielders and a couple of forwards, and have recruited too many gunslingers only in it for the money.

Sound familiar?

Long may their reign of ineptitude continue.

At least the current board have committed to a process, with outside help. That wouldn't have happened under McGuire.

It's not ideal but I don't think it's as much of a issue as the media makes it out to be.

At the end of the day, the incoming coach will be selected by a GW led panel (which will include yes men in Murphy and Licuria that I doubt will have much influence in the final decision). Regardless of which board is at the helm, the selection process will be the same and the board will support whoever GW chooses.

Saying that, I know I would prefer for these board issues to be sorted asap for multiple reasons, not just for the incoming coach.

I dare you to say “unstable board” one more time...come on, I dare you.

Not advocating for him as a yes or a no but wasn’t Ayres big on club radars only a few years ago?
Ayres applied for every vacant position, senior and assistant, for a few years trying to get back into the AFL system, not sure how interested the clubs were, given he never landed a gig it would suggest they weren’t keen at all.

What a crock. Ed’s a media person now with no ties to the club other than I assume a membership. People need to move on from Ed the Pres.

I am hearing Chris Scott is a massive chance.
This will happen if Jeff Browne gets in as Chris Scott is in Craig Kelly's stable, again Craig Kelly doing what suits himself and own personal interests.

Who are you hearing that from?
