Going heavy at the draft made sense back in early 00s when a priority pick meant you could get you pick 1 and 3.

But once the AFL adjusted compensation, you dont want to be stuck in rebuild land as their is no gaurantee you build to a premiership contender - see Carlton.

But when and why have so many supporters actually accepted that their senior AFL team would become a development team, in the hope of coming good in 3-4 years?

While the defeated loser teams are "developing a future premiership list" Geelong and Sydney just play finals every year.
