Who will captain on Anzac Day?

I think it would fitting that Bolts leads the team in his 100th game. He is a natural leader. Or he will be in ammo's next year.

From Essendon's site.

Jason Johnson, Mark Johnson, James Hird, Damien Peverill and David Hille. are in Essendon's leadership group....Peverill for Captain....oh wait.....

Doubts linger over Lloyd injury

Tuesday, April 18, 2006
Essendon remains hopeful that Matthew Lloyd's hamstring injury may not be as serious as first thought. Lloyd left the ground during the third quarter against the Bulldogs last Sunday with what appeared to be a serious hamstring problem.
However Lloyd also copped an elbow to the muscle as he fell to the ground after the marking contest and as a result is also suffering from some bruising. The bruising means Lloyd has not had the injury scanned and it may not happen until later this week if at all.

"He bleeds a lot and at this stage that means it isn't worthwhile scanning the injury because of the cork - it might happen at a later stage but at the moment we haven't arranged for him to have it scanned," Essendon football manager Dom Cato said.

Lloyd however appears likely to miss the Anzac Day clash and the following round against Hawthorn. With the new skipper sidelined, there will be plenty of discussion this week as to who might lead the Bombers out on Anzac Day.
Below Lloyd, the Essendon leadership group comprises Jason Johnson, Mark Johnson, James Hird, Damien Peverill and David Hille. It would seem certain Essendon's stand in captain will come from that group.

Apparently the leadership group after Lloyd consists of Hird, J Johnson, M Johnson, Peverill and Hille.

I think we could rule Pev and Hille out.
Which leaves the Johnsons and Hird.

Why isnt Fletcher in that leadership group? He has been an outstanding contributer for 13 seasons, I personally would have liked to see him actually made Captain ahead of Lloyd.

I think Hird will get the Nod, he always thrives on the big occasions.

I think all of Fletch's silly supensions he coped a few years back cost him a bit. Although last few years he has been sensational.

Pev for his work ethic, Hille for education. Hille has good leadership qualities, I presume it was hoped that naming him in the leadership group would be benificial for his development.

Lucas and Fletcher I guess are unofficial leaders. They are leaders by the way the play and others look up to them. The probably don't have to be in the leadership group to be effective leaders.

What a joke that we replace Solly with Peverill. One is an undisciplined idiot and the other a skill-less hack. It is embrassing that he is in our leadership group.

The Age seemed to believe it won't be Hird. I don't know where the story came from though.

I reckon it will be MJ this week and I wouldn't be suprised if they rotate it ala Sydney while Lloyd is out.

Club announced Hird as the Captain tonight.
Hird to captain Bombers in Lloyd's absence

Tuesday, April 18, 2006
James Hird’s return to the relative anonymity of being ‘just another player’ has come to an abrupt end with Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy tonight confirming he will captain the Bombers in next week’s Anzac Day clash with Collingwood.
Hird – who captained Essendon for eight seasons before relinquishing the job at the end of last season - will take over the role in the absence of Matthew Lloyd who will be sidelined for up to five weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

"It is a common sense decision," Sheedy said tonight. "Nobody would have expected Lloyd to miss a month. Why wouldn’t you replace him with one of the greatest captains this club has ever had."

"He has only just come back into the team and his game last week was fantastic. This isn’t about what he has done on Anzac Day – it is about what he has done as a leader of this Club."
Hird’s record on home and away football’s biggest stage is extraordinary having won multiple Anzac Medals and leading the Club to some of its most memorable victories.

Hird is part of the leadership group that sits just below captain Matthew Lloyd. The group includes Mark and Jason Johnson, Damien Peverill and David Hille.
