I said this on the main board and i'll say it again. I'd be very surprised if we went and got Clarkson, Its just not how we operate these days, not with the hierarchy that said Woosha could keep the coaching job as long as he wants while we were having one of our worst seasons ever. We also just upgraded 3 rookies to the main list without a new coach having his say (or maybe not ;)). Burns will probably get the job, the same drafting & development staff will stay and we'll get similar results to the last few seasons. We might see a bit of improvement with a better draw next year and then we'll fade away again. Welcome to Freo 95-2010 style management. ;)

I agree e maniac: the hierarchy won't allow anybody to run the club who has extremist views such as doing whatever it takes to win a premiership. Clarko won't get a look in. Also looks like all candidates not in finals have been interviewed - deduce Chocco won't get a look in either. Puce - ie not even vanilla

So Big Tones and Eaglemaniac is it your view we are a poorly run club now? Because I sort of agree that we look for things the public think are more important instead of picking what we need to win premierships at all cost.

Geez some of you carry on! The interviews haven't even been completed yet and you are already complaining about who we didn't get.

Melbourne is a poorly run club, we are not.

Agree and with the way people have been carrying on you would think we are the worst run team in the AFL. Woosha may have been there for a year two long but i think they made they have made the right call more than not in our existence. We have more cash than most teams with a decent list so i have confidence in the team to make the right choice and will except it.

If we didn't find anyone suitable, could we have Burns on 'probation' as 'acting coach' for a year and then either upgrade him at the end of 2014 or find a more suitable candidate if he doesn't do well? I'd be wary of this given that I feel it will be hard for 2014 to be worse for us then 2013 but it might up being our only option...

Some"facts" :

- Clarkson has a year left to run on his current contract.
- Four to five weeks ago Clarkson (or his agent) approached the board for an extension and they declined to offer one. This is what Sheahan has stated and this rumour has been doing the rounds as it is.

The scenarios in my mind (pretty obvious if you ask me):

The board are clearly waiting to see if they win the GF. IF they don't, Clarkson will either:

1. Be moved on and his contract paid out (most likely). In this scenario we offer a 4 to 5 year deal over a mil a year and he is ours.

2. Won't be offered an extension, but allowed to coach out his final year (least likely). In this scenario he will likely move on of his own accord, and again we get him. Or he stays on , but if he doesn't win the flag in his final year, he would be moved on.

If they win the GF he get's his extension.

The board is making his extension contingent on a GF win. So if we want him at the Eagles we need Freo to beat the Hawks. I'd rather take a run at someone else and Freo's cabinet remain empty.

According to Sheahan our powerbrokers are pretty embarrassed and furious at Freo's rise this year versus our capitulation and are ready to throw our financial muscle around.

We should simply be embarrassed by our capitulation, never mind purple

We are a well run club from the point of view that we make good money, have good facilities and are seen to be a club now with lots of great guys playing for us so we dont damage the AFL's reputation as such. My opinion though, is that we leave a lot to be desired in the football side of things where we once excelled.
As a quick summary i'd once again site the previous statement of Cransberg's saying Woosha had the job as long as he wanted it, despite a very poor performance for most of this year. We should of been evaluating the coaches performance at face value and it was well known that we didnt have much adaptability in our game plans and that Woosh was a possibility to retire, so we should of been evaluating other coaches more thoroughly instead of missing out on Roos for example. We have a lot of money, so use it.
The MC & coaches continued picking of players past thier prime, not fully recovered from injury, playing guys that were clearly not best 22 because they were "triers" and not playing/developing the young players enough which resulted in them looking to be traded.
Our drafting has been pretty bad as we seem to draft the same type of small bodied, vanilla wing half back player instead of identifying midfield talent with size and the ability to stand up in a tackle (instead of ducking) and get the ball out to our outside players. Instead our coach kept telling us the midfield was fine despite most people being able to see it was reliant on Cox & Naitanui completely dominating not only the tap but the clearance as well. Our midfield setups have also left a lot to be desired imo and are a big part of the reason we struggled against teams with a hard press as we handball to a teammate standing 1 foot away who gets tackled immediately etc. Our refusal to play the rest of our list at the end of the season to evaluate what they can do at AFL level when the season was done and dusted is another example of how we are falling below the expectations of a successful club.

People can get upset as much as they want with what i'm saying, but we are struggling on field, and it wont change just by itself. If you are happy with 4th and 5th thats up to you, but i feel the club needs to have a serious performance review by someone independent of the current administration so we can progress back to being a powerhouse in the comp like we used to be. If we stay this way we may end up the new old Freo..

Well just have to hope we're both wrong for the clubs sake BT..

I thought we were lagging behind other top clubs, thats why we were looking for a new home?

Maybe Collingwood with the Lexus centre and some of the newer clubs, but our facilities have always been regarded as some of the best in the league. I dont necessarily think that is an issue for us at the moment. It certainly doesnt help to have a nice new shiny gym when you're standing right next to your teammate and he passes the ball to you so you can get tackled straight away haha ;)

Actually, I don't think our facilities cut it anymore compared to other clubs. Collingwood, North, Essendon, Doggies, Hawks and Carlton all have newer facilities than us. And of course so do Gold Coast and GWS.

The sooner our new club house is built the better!

I hate this option. Imagine the media scrutiny all year. Imagine players running around not sure what the future holds. Would you resign without any idea who the coach might be? I'd rather just give it to the guy (though I don't particularly like the Burns option) for 2-3 years. I can't imagine an untried coach is going to cost the world. Coaches can get sacked if it all falls in a hole.

Nothing massive, just reiterated sheehan's credibility and the fact that sheehan didn't pull the statement from thin air and that it was an informed opinion.

There's no doubt an offer will be made.
