Who would you pick?

I strongly believe we should pick the BEST player available with our first pick regardless of whether they are small or tall.
You can always fit a great young player into any team, regardless if they are the premier team or wooden spooners. A good tall would be great but I say just go the BEST available player.

So we could end up with a ruckman in Lycett? Or a small forward? Reality is we have some areas of our list where greater depth will be a big bonus, and I would happily see the club pass over Lycett and take Conca, Cooke, Darling or Parker even if they rate Lycett higher.

If the recruiters thought Lycett was going to turn into another Sandilands or Cox and he was available at our first pick I would be mortified and very pissed off if we didnt take him. Pick the bloke who is the best player and you cant go too far wrong

I hope Port, Carlton and Hawthorn all go tall so that a mid may slide

Someone like Smedts would be great

Around 20 would be about right for Smedts IMO. Many BF posters have him going top 10 but I don't think he's that good tbh (to go top 10).

I'd personally prefer us to go for a more pure midfielder even if he is available but wouldn't be upset if we did go for him all the same.

How about a couple of speculative picks for our ppick 55 and rookie spots. Our drafting team always surprise us>

I like the look of this kid because (a) he has a lot of development to come (b) he is the perfect height for a tall forward/2nd ruck (c) he supports Freo and (d) he is a ranga. This counts.

Mature ager ready to go like Faulks

Looking at his vid he looks like a genuine old fashioned rover. We already have balla and sonson but you can never have enough real speed at the ball drop.

Thanks for those Gerbil. I especially liked the big fella Brown's video. Seeing a bloke at his height marking the ball at the highest possible point is pretty damn encouraging, nobody will get near him with that combination of reach and good judgement of the flight.

I know nothing about recruiting or the talent pool on offer but watching some of these videos is a bit of fun. Speaking of fun, this is probably the most fun highlights video I've seen. What's in a name?

Just a few to have a look at....

Gavin Roberts - That video doesn't really do him justice in regards to his speed. Was highly rated by some last season, but had some injury concerns. Not only is he quick, but he also has excellent skills. Don't take much notice of where it says he is a tall forward though, he plays off the flank and through the middle.

Jarryd Lyons - Is an inside midfielder who can go forward, as opposed to the video which suggests he is a forward first. His ability to hit the scoreboard makes him a more attractive option than Schammer, and his strong marking could see him as a Hasleby replacement.

Kelvin Lawrence - Small defender/forward with good skills and speed, needs to improve his endurance like most indigenous players. Has a bit of toughness and aggro about him, which personally I always like to see.

Chris, Kevin Sheehan doesn't have Lyons in his top 30. Are you thinking he may be a good pick for us at 43 and is he likely to go that far down the draft or do you disagree with Sheehan's assessment and think he is possibly worth pick 20?

I was thinking more about the rookie draft.

Ah. Excellent. Lets do it :D

I must admit, I don't know how you guys manage to keep up with the young blokes coming through. I try to be informed about the current AFL players in all the teams, plus a handfull of up and comers and that is pretty time consuming.

Would love Conca in the blue and white next year. Hope he lasts until pick 20. Not saying that because he is a West Aussie - but he looks all class, in the way he uses the ball, the way he leads on-field, his awareness. Looks a very good package.

I notice he said the following:

"I'd probably prefer to stay at home with the family, but it's a bit of an honour to get invited to go over the draft as well," Conca said.

Thats the way to do it. Put the fear of the "go home factor" into other clubs to ensure he slides.

you want to see him at north, carlton or geelong?????

In his live chat on the AFL.com today shifter sheehan said the Dockers were looking at Cripps or Fasolo for pick 20!

However...

********** on twitter is reporting that GC may take Prestia and Tape very early thereby throwing a large spanner in the works of all mock drafters

http://twitter.com/AFLNewsInsider

I really have no idea who we will get. Our recruiting people have been very cagy me thinks. Do they have a trick up their sleeves?

It was interesting in Bond's media meeting that he said we pretty much got the players we wanted in the trade period (and Anthony). The inference I got from it is that we will pick the best player available - whether he be a KPP or a midfielder.

FWIW i rate Fasolo as the best Western Australian midfield prospect in this years draft. Plays very similar to Bernie Vince in the way he kicks and carries the ball.

Averaged 18 disposals from 9 games in WAFL seniors this year with a high of 22 disposals. Also kicked 14.8, including a bag of 6.

Check him out: http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/297380/alex-fasolo/

Funny ol' thing the pre draft weeks.

Initially no chance of Darling or Parker so we may settle on Conca, Cook or Mitchell. Fair enough happy with Conca sounds pretty good and Darling was more of a hope.

Darling is now becoming more of a chance (although if you read through the pages on BF his head swelled to the size of a water melon and he may struggle to function post head injury!) and Conca is now pushing top 10, bugger just started to like Conca and Darling may need more time at ward 1 to sort out his frontal lobe issues.

Meanwhile Parker may sneak in to the top 30, Mitchell is a second rounder with dodgy shoulders and we are looking at Cripps and Fasolo who seemed to be 2-3rd round picks.

It will be interesting but now feel that Conca will be missed and Darling could be heading our way. Might have to watch a few Black Adders to work in a few Darling quotes!

if we can somehow get darling, i reckon it will be the biggest afl heist since micky barlow :)D)... god i hope it happens.... a direct replacement for pav, who could spend his twilight years doing what james hird did, which was whatever the hell he wanted :thumbsu:

I was thinking of who Conca reminds me of. Its Didak. The way he runs, the way he evades people and even the way he kicks. Seems just as good a kick although not as freakish as Didak.

2 days to go and we will all find out.

If we don't get Conca, I reckon someone like Smedts, Brodie Smith or Isaac Smith will fall to us. Either way we should get some quality with our first pick.
