Who would you pick?

FWIW i rate Fasolo as the best Western Australian midfield prospect in this years draft. Plays very similar to Bernie Vince in the way he kicks and carries the ball.

Averaged 18 disposals from 9 games in WAFL seniors this year with a high of 22 disposals. Also kicked 14.8, including a bag of 6.

Check him out: http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/297380/alex-fasolo/

He caught my eye in the WAFL a few times this year.

Would be happy with Conca and probably Darling. I think the negative press he has got is the kick in the pants he needs. Really, when you look past that he is still a pretty damn good get - can take a good contested mark, kick a goal and has very good defensive pressure - something that is crucial in the modern game. The knock on his height is also a crock really if you look at how well Pav/Fev do at similar heights.

Not sure about Cripps with our first pick. If Conca and Darling are gone it means that someone like Brodie Smith, Jed Lamb etc has slipped to us.

Our second pick will be interesting. There is some really good depth to around the mid-early 30's. Then it starts to get into the area where the kids are more hit and miss. Never know - someone may slide.

Third pick will be even more interesting. Wouldn't mind someone like Rhys Cooyoo - we need another quick small forward who can stack the defensive pressure on and who can kick a goal.

Happy with Darling , Cripps or Conca in no particular order.

Am gunning for Litherland for our 2nd pick. Just hope he makes it that far.

In saying that we have been known to pull the trigger early , ala Fyfe , if we don't think he will make it to our 2nd pick.

Would be happy with any of them, on the proviso that we can curb Darling's alleged dick-headedness

I was talking to someone from West Perth today who reckons he's a good kid, ie not a ******** at all.

Would love him to fall to us

Doc shouldn't you be sunning yourself somewhere?

Cooyou, just 18, is similar in stature at 182cm and the way he plays to exciting Fremantle midfielder Stephen Hill.

ROFL :D

I could do without Cooyou, that is until the rookie draft at the earliest. If someone else wants to pay over the top for him, then so be it. The same goes with Ugle, who I do actually like.

Darling with 20 is still the perfect outcome. If we wanted to go home grown, Cripps would be my next choice followed by Conca. But I would probably require a change of pants if we landed Darling.

Could always go an entirely home grown draft. There would be plenty of options....

20 - Darling/Cripps/Conca
43 - Fasolo/Newton/Andreoli/Litherland/Hamp
56 - Yarran/Chalwell/Menagola/Butcher/Wilson/Monaco

Darling, Litherland and Menagola would be a likely and I reckon very satisfactory outcome. Looking outside of WA maybe Horlin-Smith as a smokie for pick 20, Callum Sinclair or Ben Brown for the lower picks.

IF JACK Darling were six months older, he would be starting his second pre-season right now. He would have gone to his AFL club as a very high draft pick, he would have probably have played some senior games and he would have a better understanding of what it will take to become the athletic, imposing player that he has has always wanted to be. He would have gotten started.

The injury, in itself, has concerned some clubs. Darling was desperate to do the athletic testing at the combine, trying to convince AIS medicos to call his neurosurgeon, and frustrated when he was told he couldn't do anything. Recent updates have satisfied some clubs he'll have no ongoing trouble at all, yet others aren't convinced and worry about the long-term impact.

Every club has heard the off-field stories - and there are more of them - and some simply wouldn't draft him, at any pick. ''We couldn't keep up with his drinking,'' one recruiter said. Others suspect he's been treading water this year - bored, stuck at home when he was ready to be drafted so long ago - and are sure he'll settle down once in the AFL system. Darling is very likeable, and it's true he loves football and wants to be good. Will he calm down in a more disciplined environment with more purpose?

Interesting for a 17 year old...one of the WA clubs perhaps?

not too sure about all this love for Darling, struggled in the WAFL this year when pitted against mature bodied defenders, I think Spangher kept the kid under wraps in one game from memory??.......excellent the year before when he went under the radar and played against a few skinnier 3rd best opposition defenders.

be interested to see who Freo do pick at 20......can easily seeing us picking up one of the local talls up for grabs in the draft......Litherland, Chalwell or Menagola.......or may be a midfielder type in Cripps or Fasolo?.........

I don't think he went under the radar the year before - he got good KP defenders at WAFL level. I think he just didn't have a good year. IMO he still looked dangerous this year, he just didn't put it on the scoreboard and he played a larger variety of roles as well. And had a number of injuries. Whilst there will be recruiters worried about his height, my only worry would be that he is a basket case off-field.

As much as some supporters might like the idea, in reality I can't see us taking Litherland or Chalwell unless we rate them as a forward or midfield prospect. The club has said time and time again that we are after KP forwards and midfielders, not key defenders (or flankery types) small defenders or small forwards. And I think this is a good strategy - it is so much easier to turn a midfielder into a good small defender then vice versa.

We shouldn't dismiss Darling on the basis of his so called "plateau" this year. Reality is, he is still only 18 and has a lot of conditioning and development to go. The article mentions he was a bit down this year - having had his mates go to the Gold Coast and having to plug away in the WAFL - which accords with other interviews he gave earlier in the year. The negative press he has got is the kick up the pants he needs - I imagine he would come out ready to prove the world wrong next year.

At the end of the day we should weigh him up against kids like Mitchell/Cook etc for pick 20. Darling is a much better competitor than the latter two, much better defensive pressure. At the worst I think Darling will be an Aaron Hamill, who was the barometer for St Kilda for several years. I would love someone like that in the team and up forward. At the best, he could be a Fevola like forward or even Pav like - able to pinch hit through the middle.

Compare that to Mitchell/Cook. Both could be great, but both could end up Dan Parker (shudder) like busts. Cook compares himself to Staker - not sure thats the best comparison to make.

I think we will nab a good player regardless. If Conca/Darling go early - it means someone good will slide to us.

If Litherland was available with our second rounder, I wouldn't be surprised if we took him. But I do agree that we don't necessarily need his type at the moment. Would just be a best available type selection, although even that may be unlikely if we do hopefully get Darling with our first pick.

As for Chalwell, I don't really see him as a third round prospect. I more just put his name there as an example of a WA draft. And again, we don't need that sort of in between type player. I'd consider him in the rookie draft if he were available. Sorry to his agents who mention him in every one of their 50+ posts.

Batley is one of the few small defenders I would consider in the national draft, because I think he could push up into the midfield. Otherwise, I would look to take a genuine small defender in the rookie draft. But I do agree midfielders rather than specialist smalls in the national draft.

Being overseas on hols I haven't felt the need to to delve into things in draft land as deeply as I've done in previous years (part of the reason for a holiday in the off season was so I wouldn't obsess so much about Freo!!!) and I haven't really had much interest in who we will take but after what little reading I've done I'm hoping Conca makes it to us. Just sounds like he's compliment our midfield nicely. We have some extraordinary players like Hill, Mora, Fyfe (hopefully Palmer) would be nice to have someone that just gets in and gets it done much like Hase did for so long. If he is taken earlier the one of the clubs who takes him will have passed up another blue chip prospect so it's all good.
Darling sounds like he's be a bargain get too.

I asked him about why we would pass up Darling. His then compared Darling to Rich in saying that there are concerns he wont develop much as opposed to other prospects, and that his junior form was only so good because he was bigger than everyone else.

So seems like the standard criticism, which personally I don't understand. It's almost like people prefer skinny kids because you can actually see them developing. It's not like Darling is just a big body, the kid can clearly play football. Having a ready made body should be a positive rather than a negative.

West Coast getting Darling would ruin the draft for me.
