Every other team in the competition seems to have some sort of game plan on returning the ball in from a behind, we seem to struggle every time

I noticed we used to go short out of the opposition goal sqaure and then long to Kreuzer on the wing and it seemed to work 9 times out of 10 but now there is no game plan what so ever for returning the ball in after a behind, players just seem to be standing flat footed or running with their opponent, nobody makes a realistic attempt at leading for the ball,

I actually find myself cringeing when we attempt to kick the ball in,

has anyone else noticed this lack of game plan coming out of defence??

I am more concerned about us defending kick ins.

Ratts is all over forward line pressure but on oppostion kick ins he plays a player a kick behind the play. This allows the oppostion to have a spare man in their back 50 and enables quick and easy switches with teams able to almost walk it out of their defensive 50.

I thought it was much better on Friday night, when Stevens was kicking in

Spot on.

Part of the problem is making the right decision, then executing quickly and effectively.

The last few weeks Johnson has been doing the kick ins. Problem is he has been asleep when a behind is kicked, whoever gets the ball stands in the square for a bit, then CJ says "its my kick"........by the time he gets there he's got about 5 seconds to do something.

Other than that, yes, the first kick isn't the important one, its the next kick that needs to be quick and effective. Too often we hesitate at the first option, then give a poor kick to our second option which is often a bomb down the line to a tall.

This is actually the first decent criticism of Ratts game plan that I have read (though still doesn't prove whether its IS the plan, or whether the players are just stuffing the ACTUAL plan up).........

We need to have Stevo/Johnson kicking it out most of the time. no offence to army but he can't kick the balll as accurately over 40-50m as johnson/steven do.

I reckon stevens should take the kick out. kick to johnson in the pocket. then you have stevens ready to receive it back to run around or johnson to kick it long

I notice a lot of other teams have someone five metres away from the bloke on the mark and the player kicking in plays on and gets a shepheard and runs it 30m and cancells out the chance of it coming back in straight away.

Because often we become lazy and forget to lead out and make targets for the bloke kicking in.

It gets very boring to see a group of 10 blokes virtually standing still on HB line at every kick in. What other option does the kicker have but to bomb it long to Kreuzer in those circumstances?

Even Johnson has been f$#%ing useless with his disposal lately, especially for someone supposedly recruited for this very skill. Would surely have been dropped anyway if he hadn't re-injured his hamstring

but now there is no game plan what so ever for returning the ball in after a behind, players just seem to be standing flat footed or running with their opponent, nobody makes a realistic attempt at leading for the ball

Agree and not just with kick outs

Watching them on Friday night I was really struck by how flat we look all over the park - no run from behind, no one breaking lines attempting to take the game on, very little playing on from a mark - just no where near enough movement in general

Almost looks like the grind of the season has got us, a few boys out there in desperate need of a few more pre-seasons IMO

Young bodies can't take the whole season. We seem vey flat indeed. Joseph should have been given a spell weeks ago. Yet he is still playing?
Eddie betts looks injured? Judd is not 100 percent? But will PLAY .

Our tackling and pressure was ok before the break, after the break it has gone downhill. I seriously think that will win only one more game for the season Melbourne. I hope i am wrong, but the way we execute and play i cant but help saying this. The game plan is too rigid, we still don't know to break down zones effectively! No free flowing football.

Still dependant on Fevola and Judd. Ratten has no plan B. Teams know stop these 2 and Carlton will struggle big time. Has to take risks next few weeks, i dont care if it stuffs our structure. Bloody try it.

Kreuze CHF from start of game, thorton forward, betts in the middle, Stevens kick ins. USE him forward at times as well. Walker forward/ middle running the lines. Take some risks, dont stagnate. And if it doesnt work well at least you gave it a go. Just suggestions i am sure you guys have others? Pro active CFC , fear=failure in mind and body.

Kick in's at both end of the ground kill us. When we kick out, we simply can't get through a zone.We certainly take too long getting it back into play. When they kick out, they run it out with ease.

It's frustrating to watch for sure

Was I dreaming or did Jordan Russell kick out a couple of times and execute centimetre perfect passes each time? For all the Jordy-bashing on here, he seemed cool as a cucumber.

we' always kick it to a player with an opponent right behind him. We are not running hard enough to make a good lead for an uncontested mark.

Since Waite injured his knee we have struggled, the good thing about Waite was he was very quick to react and get the ball moving. Like some of the other posters have said, we have too many different people kicking in. We need to nominate i say 2 players, and who ever is closest kicks in quickly, its the only way to beat defensive kick in zones.

The past couple of weeks we had Hartlett kicking in and he was woeful!!

Stevens was good at it on Friday as he can kick 50-60 and hit a target.

We also need to have a big man target kicking out, many other teams single out their ruckman well, we don't, our ruckmen always run to packs??

When other teams are kicking out, i think we give up the short option to easily, i think around the 50 we are good, but we give up the short option and then they run it and kick over the 50m zone we have to the wing.

I do believe our wonderful coach may have something to do with it.
As cringeworthy as seeing Armfield kick in was, our inability to find a loose target following the huddle against the pies tops the chart.

WHAT DOES HE DO ALL WEEK?

I noticed we used to go short out of the opposition goal sqaure and then long to Kreuzer on the wing and it seemed to work 9 times out of 10 but now there is no game plan what so ever for returning the ball in after a behind, players just seem to be standing flat footed or running with their opponent, nobody makes a realistic attempt at leading for the ball,

100% we are pretty terrible at this. I really think we are the worst team in the comp when not in possession of the ball, whether our team-mate has it or not.

When we have the ball, we don't lead or shepherd enough for the guy with the ball.

When we don't have it, our mids and forwards have been deplorable with their pressure. I'm sure it will get better, but IMO this is one of the areas why Collingwood are able to go so far with what seems like an average list.

This year they have some genuine A graders like Davis, Swann and Pendlebury.....but over the last few seasons they have just been a really well drilled side.
