Analysis Why are we s**t?

No, the list is just shit because they're at the start of rebuilding it, not by design to be shit.

As for the team we have playing, are you suggesting we are faking injuries? Is Tippa wearing a fat suit?

I mean, I would like to believe we are all of a sudden capable of organising and executing a plan that would involve that many people, but I doubt it.

It would make a good movie though.

I wouldn’t say it’s been fully planned out like that. I do think the club has realised where we are in the list build. It’s gross negligence or the club has a few years at the bottom to increase the amount of elite talent they can potentially bring into the ranks.

It’s not necessarily tanking but it’s similar to what’s happening at North atm kinda. Gut the list, play the kids and get draft picks.

I believe that is what rebuilding a list is, yes.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the tanking, but if they are doing that I don't mind at all.

It's workrate and effort.

No amount of talent and draft picks will get us to where we want to be.

Culture shift needs to happen and until it does, no player will truly excel at the club and accordingly, our team will never be that good.

Our culture won't change until we have a captain that leads by example, influences matches, demands respect through honour (not popularity) and isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

And until our coach grows to shows passion, is gritty and tough when it counts.

Last time we had a captain and coach like that was Hird and Sheedy.

Says a lot...

I agree, we seemed to be improving last year with some good buy-in from players playing for each other and strong improvement in our general culture, got touched up in the Elimination final and now fallen off a cliff effort/enthusiasm wise.

Also, I just don't understand how professional players (midfield predominantly) have completly dropped the ball defense wise when it would be a key heavily reviewed focus as to what some of our problems are you'd think... ?

Very bizarre regression from last year!

We're shit because we say one thing, but do the exact opposite.

At the end of last year, Rutten said we would focus on improving contested ball after Bulldogs thrashed us in the EF. I said "with what players are we going to do that?"
Rutten states that this improvement is going to come from within. I laughed.

I laughed because I know what internal improvement means. It means that all hope is being pinned on Caldwell who hadn't really played much in 5 years (and has similar traits to the other mids). It also means that we're planning our list with the hope of having no injuries to one of the most consistently injured teams in the competition. Of course they also expected a few Parish-like improvements even though that happened only a handful amount of times in 20 years. None of the other mids except Parish 2021 have ever demonstrated consistency in this area.

To no one's surprise, we enter round 8 sitting 17th for contested possession differential. This is the very thing we identified as an area of improvement and supposedly worked on ALL off-season to improve. Add 17th for stoppage clearance differential (something I identified as an issue last year).

Why say you're going to work on something, then sit on your arse all off-season? If we recruited Greenwood, Brodie or Dunstan, then we'd still likely be crap, but at least we'd have worked on the area we identified as a weakness. There's at least some progress.

I don't think they realise how bad our development is. At this point, we need players from other clubs who have learned how to consitently win contested ball to improve that area of our game.

Improvement had to come from within. Not like we could just hop down to the contested football shop and buy a Joel Sellwood and a Patrick Dangerfield.

Doesn’t have to come from within only. You can hop down to the contested football shop and get some Hewett, Brodie, Dunston type bargains. Just ask Carlton, Freo and Melbourne.

No, but you can hop to the contested football shop and get a Greenwood, Hewett or Dunstan for free or Brodie and a start of second-round pick for salary cap space (which we have plenty of).

Greenwood not doing a lot. Brodie is going well but he would have to be pushing Parish out of the side as that is the role he is playing.
Have already discussed Hewett. They asked and he went to another club. Dunstan. Okay for a back up in an established team but not really someone you look at in a rebuild.

My reply is above.
And we did look at Hewett. He chose another club.

My point was, you don’t have to look within for improvement, you can get talent externally. Like the aforementioned teams have. Not something we have historically done well mind you…

F@ck me the house is on fire. I’m done with recommendations, this club is wigging me out

It’s kind of strange how everybody was pretty rapt how we were progressing last year, and now after a shit six weeks thinks we’ve been f’ed for 20 years. Like it never happened.
Speaking for myself and probably some others, a down turn was expected this year.

The issue is the complete abandonment of anything resembling an observable objective that everyone is working towards.

As Lore said above, when its good, its good and vice versa. Too bad that the players seem to throw in the towel towards any sense of team orientated thinking and effectively have a dummy spit when its not going their way.

What part of McGrath, Parish, Merrett, Shiel, Stringer and Caldwell are we rebuilding? See this is the problem.
Caldwell is the only player that we can possibly consider as a "rebuilding" player given his age, but that would classify Bulldogs with Smith, Carlton with Walsh or Port with Butters as rebuilding too. If Shiel or McGrath can't perform in that role, then put Dunstan in.

We talked about Hewett, but I don't accept your explanation given there is no evidence of us even inquiring.

Greenwood isn't doing much, but he has more than double the tackles (46) than Parish (16), McGrath (21), Shiel (18), Caldwell (21), Merrett (12). Goes to show just how bad our midfield really is.

You tend to take it easy on Essendon by making it look like there's nothing they could have done, but that's not the reality. If teams like Fremantle managed to do it, then there's no reason why Essendon can't either.

**** me my point is you do not just go and get some average hacks either.
Where you trading out Parish to put Brodie in the side ? That is the role he plays.
