Why did Port do well? Also compared to Freo, and why they've done so poorly (and WC, Adelaide)?

IIRC he had just played in Ports 1994 SANFL premiership side and was "happy" to go wherever. I don't think he ever did the "I won't go here, here or here" but happy to be proven wrong. When that trade was done he was incredibly happy to stay in Adelaide though.

Correct.
He was an essendon supporter as well so im sure he would have loved to play with wanganeen and long there.

Seriously? Can you elaborate please? I CBA looking it up; I'm still digesting the fact that Damian Drum has been elected to the federal parliament.

Ben Edwards from Claremont - see below.

Also Troy Johnson is a good one, served jail time.

Another one is Douglas Headland (no relation to Des), picked up at 42 in the national draft of 94 and never made it on to the list.

We also had John Neesham on the rookie list at one point, a cousin or nephew of Gerard and absolutely no good at footy but he was a handy water polo player!

I have seen it said that the Dockers had a lesser salary cap than other clubs and that the club was so poor that they could not afford to fly recruiting staff around the country to see potential draftees. I can't confirm how factual these things are.

Thanks for that. A sorry tale indeed.

Give you the drum:
Damian Kevin Drum (born 28 July 1960) is the former Nationals member for Northern Victoria Region in the Victorian parliament, Australia. He is also a former Australian rules footballer and coach, most notably as senior coach of the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League from 1999 to 2001. He turned to a political career after being sacked during the 2001 season. Drum was first elected to parliament in 2002. He served as Minister for Sports and Veterans Affairs in the Napthine Ministry from March to December 2014.[1] In 2016, he was elected to federal Parliament as the Member for Murray.

More successful off field  ...

Basically cracked the shits when Neesham didn't polish his knob when he came in for an interview. Was no surprise that so many of his best games came against Freo, a petty person but no doubt good fortune for the Crows being the only SA team at the time.

Port already had a big supporter base from the SANFL, with a long history of success. Freo started from scratch, although in Aussie Rules heartland with East and South Fremantle as logical antecedents.

Being sacked from Freo was the best thing that happened to Drum. :$

Worst post on here ever. That's saying something too.
