Why do you Barrack for your Team?

Because we beat Collingwood in two, not one, but count them (one, two), that's two GF's. This should be a good enough reason for everyone to follow the Lions.

Pfffftt....you should follow Carlton then :)

Mum and Dad were Carlton through and through. I thank God he gifted me with wisdom instead. :D

A: because your club became extinct

B: Wannabe ex rugby band wagon jumper

Following footy since before you were born, but keep up the generalisations. BTW this is your third direct response to one of my posts, what's the obsession? I hope your not one of these BF stalkers.

League mates = no success. Have tried with strangers in Sydney pubs = almost got my head beaten in.
Know the feeling. If there's anything worse than being an AFL fan trying to promote Aussie rules in Sydney, it's being a Kangaroos fan trying to promote Aussie rules in Sydney. We are not looked on too fondly up here :(

The only people I can really chat to about Aussie Rules up here are all the other ex-Vics at work that have also made the move up here.
Oh, and of course you guys :)

Really was given no choice in the matter, if my dad had been able I would have been wearing a saints jumper in the womb.

So it is my dad's fault, he grew up near Moorabbin so that is how he and his brother became saints and this has been passed on to me.

because they're the Hawks - you don't need to anaylse it - you just do it

I support North Melbourne because the Hawks guersey was the most sickening thing I've ever seen. Reminded me of my sisters nappies. :D

In primary school two sporting houses had Norths and Hawks colours....you were devastated if you slipped through and had to wear the Hawks one :D

That's sort of the reason why I embraced Port better than Crows - because your supporters always supported your club.

Our family were actually Collingwood supporters and half changed to Fitzroy in the early 70's when a family friend went there to play.

Some of my earliest memories are of my Dad yelling/commentating at the Footy replay on the television (Knights... Tuck... Dipper... MATTHEWS!!!) . He was a mad Hawks supporter and when we made the '83 Grand Final he took myself and my brother along. Eight Grand Finals in nine years with five wins and there was never a question about who I"d support.

Came to Australia a million years ago & within minutes of setting foot in Victoria was asked who I barracked for. Made someone sit down & explain it to me & given that my Dads nickname was Tiger, I guess it just had to be Richmond. Other family members are Essendon (dont know why) & Carlton (following another family tradition)

My family brainwashed me while i was young, best thing they have ever done :D

:D :D

My first memory of being a Carlton supporter was way back in 1969 as a kid.

I can only assume I followed the Blues because they won the 68 flag.

Here is the thread about the same topic from RWO. It became so popular that there is even a sticky. Considering how ecclectic the Swans supporter base is, it is an awesome read.

People have been wanting to hear me give my reasons for following the Swans. Because I saw something in the sport of AFL football that I wanted to support. I wanted others to see its qualities. And for Sydneysiders to embrace this game. I developed a relationship with this football club because of this.

I recall quite succintly my first experience of VFL footy. It was a North Melbourne vs Collingwood match from Arden St in 1983. I was watching this strange yet lightning fast sport with a great deal of fascination. My mother saw me watching it and immediately told me to turn it off. She said that "that game was a game for ****s." Hmm, famous last words dear mother.

I duly found out that Sydney actually had its own team. I started pricking up my ears to the fact that there was something I could find out about this game and team. So I rang up the Swans and asked for a newsletter. (I was 10 at the time, mind you.) The most satifying thing was that as a rather petulant kid I could seriously get up my mum's nose for doing so, which made following footy so much more rewarding.

I got my Dad to take me to a game. We had SCG members tickets so it wouldn't have cost us anything. To Mum's credit she did dress me in a red t-shirt and white shorts (something the SCG Trust staff did not take a liking to). We parked in what would prove to be our traditional spot in Nobb Lane Surry Hills and proceeded to get to the ground in time for kick-off. Er, kick-off, that's at 3pm right. We turned up at the start of the 2nd quarter. UGH.

All I recall of the game was that Hawthorn thrashed us, there was next to nobody in the then Pat Hills Stand. A Swan missed a shot at goal from the edge of the square. And the Hawks supporters behind the goals threw lots of yellow paper into the air when the Hawks kicked a goal.

By 1986 I was getting taken to a couple of games. I recall us not getting a seat at the game when we drew a then record crowd of 37893 to a game against the Hawks. We eventually found 2 in the MA Noble near Kenny.

And having Michael Roach (or was it Jeff Hogg) kick the winning goal for Richmond against us. A guy behind me was yelling out "Hogg sprog." To this day I have enjoyed watching football from behind the goals at ground level. Watching the pill fly through the sticks had this hyponotic feel about it.

I signed up to play junior footy for St Ives. I was the only Swans supporter in the Under 12s at all, a somewhat sobering thought. But that was what footy was like in those days. Even against the Bears the Little League teams would for some reason cheer for the opposition. People just didn't seem to identify with the Swans back then.

I signed up as a member back in 1990. I sat originally with the then-feeble cheer squad, who in those days were sat right next to the louts up for a drunken weekend in Sin City. They ended up moving to the wing, but I left them in a huff one day as I was told off for waving a flag. There was this bloke on the wing who used to wave a Collingwood guernsey yet get the chants going for us, whilst waving his flag. It was PeterH_Oz.

Getting back to the question at hand, why do I follow the Swans. Because they are there. Why do I pretty much sacrifice much of my social time and even more of my income to support them, because I have such fun doing so. And because I get an uncontrollable adrenalin rush after some wins!

Back in the 90s when my Raiders were winning premierships et all, I stood firm in my loyalty to the Swans. Why, because I felt that for footy to survive in Sydney we just had to be there EVERY WEEK. I would go to matches in Melbourne and Adelaide in the dark days as well. And would gain respect from the supporters from Melbourne right from the get-go. I made sure on my first trip to Melbourne that I chanted "Go Swans" and NOT "Syd-ney" not to upset the fans down there.

I enjoyed the way they followed their football down there. And was highly curious about our history as South Melbourne. I went with a guy by the name of David Murphy to have a look at the old Lake Oval. Workmen repairing the old stand took a liking to us when they found out we were from Sydney and even gave us an imprompdue tour of the ground. I gained a greater understanding for my club in its past life.

I have stayed loyal to the Swans despite all sorts of things. Cheer Squad presidents in Melbourne would fall at the drop of a hat. There would be constant niggling between people. Often nasty fighting, both between and within Sydney and Melbourne-based supporter ranks. But I would get through all that and stick by my side. I always wanted to make a difference. I'd like to think that in my small way I am doing that to this very day.

The facts remain, that since I really started organising everything interstate, the Swans NEVER had a Cheer Squad in places like Brisbane or Adelaide (aside from a few travelling Melbournians.) I paid $80 for sticks for Brisbane and $70 for them in Adelaide. I now just travel interstate with all my flags in a laundrimat bag and tape them up on match day. Where I am not barred from using them, I bring big flags. This is a Sydney tradition we have helped cultivate despite all sorts of intimidation from those down south (AND NORTH these days)

Have I made a difference, yes I have a great deal. Even in Perth these days, we have support for the Swans. And flags and banners are being waved behind the goals. Does that help them? Well; you ain't telling me it hurts any.

Well i guess its my turn to tell everyone who has posted in this thread why i barrack for Collingwood.
Well my old man is a Collingwood supporter, and i know this is going to sound really weird but, when i was a child i really like hamburgers, and Collingwood are nicknamed the Pies and i thought that pies where hamburgers  bit weird and thats pretty much how i started barracking for The Pies :)

Well coming from Sydney, I had very little interest in following AFL/VFL, but I watched the game on odd occasions. (Typical thugby blockhead back in the day.) Now I love the game just as much as both the Rugby codes combined.

I never wanted to follow Sydney, due to the salary cap exclusions which I thought was unfair towards everyone else. My mind was based on following a Melbourne-based team as it is mainly a southern state/Victorian based game.

Anyways, started dating a girl from Victoria & she got me into AFL. She followed Hawthorn & just to be a shyte stirrer I asked who are your arch-rivals are & she said "Essendon." So, I followed them ever since.

The only person I've converted to AFL up here is my Dad who has a soft-spot for Geelong.

-Cheers
